The quote I remember went something like "I don't want to be 50, putting mud on myself at The Sands, having grown old and fat."

Is he 50? No
Is he at The Sands? No
Is he fat? No

I think we're still okay.

He pretty much, to me, has a Radiohead trajectory, for the better or worse, you decide. I remember him saying, about Grizzly Bear : "If I knew I could do that when I started, things would be very different now". And, yeah, he's getting somewhat Grizzly Bear-y I suppose. Not too interested into punching eardrums in the nads anymore, and much more fascinated with details and subtlety. You're totally entitled to find it boring though, but for me, I shed every hope to go back to the old hyper-abrasive NIN and embrace this new sensibility. Even though I wouldn't mind getting my ears violated one last time (I thought the Tetsuo track was fucking mindblowing).

Tetsuo was crushing, as well as challenging creatively. I dont care if he keeps making ball busting music anymore. That's not what I mean by boring. PHM wasn't exactly ball busting. What always attracted me to NIN was that he was writing pop songs with noise/industrial/aggressive/experimental leanings. His best works are essentially well written songs through a dirty lens.

I can't say that the new material is on that tier, for the most part. Now I'm not some wavy gravy a-hole that says a good song is only good if you can play it on acoustic guitar BUT I find that the things I really enjoyed about NIN tunes are harder to find. NOW something like Year Zero lacked, at part, what I desire but it made up with the all new sound palate of fancy sounds. New songs dont sound fancy either.

Listening to Zoo Station for the first time in over a year, and damn does it sound good.

The fact that it's a cover is probably why no one talks about it any more, but it sounds a lot better to me now than when it first came out.

I hold up my phone and tap the button a few times, and put it up. I do that two or three times a show, and if I don't get a good picture, oh well. Now I at least want one or two good pictures of NIN.

That's entirely different to getting pissed off because you're recording every song and expect people to stand still to accommodate you and your camera. Everyone snaps some photos at some point, some people just take cameras too far :)

Edit: I know a lot of people like to do get video recordings of shows on here, but I feel that I must clarify that I'm referring to people who get angry with you and break the atmosphere because of their sheer determination to have something to show from their experience.

Agreed. Although it needs to be expanded as much as possible, so basically everything from the vinyl version except for Ripe.

Ripe (With Decay) on re-release, plus all extended vinyl versions, 10 Miles High, The New Flesh and Appendage on re-release plz Trent.

Where did you hear/read this?

It was in this article from the Guardian (http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/aug/08/the-nine-lives-of-trent-reznor).

Keen to clear his debt, early in 2012 he set about penning two new songs for the collection, Satellite and Everything. "It felt fresh instead of a chore or a job," he says. "They felt like two different versions of where I might go if I were to start making a record. So I thought: 'Rather than piss these away on a greatest-hits record which nobody cares about, including me, why don't we see if there's an album in there?'"

I am wondering what everyone's favorite Ghost CD/side is...

Mine is 2 (I think).

I gotta compile all of my favorite Ghosts tracks one of these days, into one or two sides.

While I'm on the subject--it has been said that Ghosts 29 is, factually speaking, a great deal of the Goosebumps theme song, right? I mean...right?

Even umptillion listens later, it still blows my mind. My favourite single track he's ever produced, and I'm still sulking about it not heralding an album full of thoroughly violated classical instruments entwined with blaring synth noise and chainsaw guitars. I've never heard anything quite like it.

Still, shouldn't complain, because we're currently getting an album and tour that're both shaping up to be very special indeed.

I thought it looked familiar! Nicely spotted. I'm not sure about the others, but they certainly haven't been used as covers yet. The one with the girl on the right looks familiar - a Survivalism clip maybe? And from the little I can make out of the bottom right image, it looks like something out of the Broken movie. There are some rather Ghosty-looking landscape pictures, though they aren't any that've been released (the yellowish right-centre one looks very much like the grass-on-sand Ghosts art, but on closer inspection it seems to be all rock, mud or sea).

Anyway. I'd imagine a lot of it may end up in the HM deluxe edition's art book.

How could we have missed this? Nice. I'd love the idea that each track has a snippet of the vinyl cover art. If so, Copy of A having a cover art doesn't automatically make it a single, because every track would have a different artwork. The chances of Everything being the new single/video have just increased by 27%.

So looks like we may be seeing this next week or perhaps later this week? I really hope it comes out this week, if it turns out they're going to use "Everything"...I can't wait to hear it!

since people talk about these two songs again I listened to the rehearsal versions of "sunspots" and "all the love in the world" a couple of times and I genuinely enjoy both of them. God knows why they were never performed live on any occasion. With a little bit of tweeking they sound pretty much like the album version and have the potential to become nice little live gems by now.

The Reason Being

^ For me the high notes are sung a bit awkwardly, which is fine as they are rehearsals and never meant to be released but yeah that always stopped me from really enjoying those two.

As for the Copy of A artwork being from the vinyl, it was the first thing I noticed, I just figured everyone else did too and wasn't worth mentioning. Being one of the people who "ripped on the artwork", I don't like the vinyl artwork either. It's something i'd expect from 25 year old Manson's buddy Trent, not 48 year old married with kids Trent. Yeah i'm probably missing the point and will stop bitching now. Love the new music.

That's my very thought when I first heard these in 2008, but for some reason it doesn't bother me anymore and I enjoy them alot. At least sunspots could be a great track live if he changed his vocal tone a bit. all the love in the world on the other hand I can sense why it was never officially played live. Within the context of a show that song might be a tad to quiet and yet again not quiet enough to assure that the audience stays the same like during hurt or lights in the sky. It's an odd track, but I love it as the opener for with teeth and the added piano to this year's live version of the way out is through reminds me of that song, so that's why I kept revisiting it more than I did in the past.

You know, I think it would be a really cool opening to a show if the stage was pitch black, you're not really expecting the show to start, and then the drum machine starts up, a spotlight shines, and there's Trent singing "Watching all the insects march along..."

I don't know. A lot of people seem to have a fairly low opinion of W_T here, but I adore the album so, so much. It would be the best thing if he broke out some of the deep cuts from W_T during the Tension tour.

The Reason Being

I loved With Teeth (the song) live. Something tells me most people don't though, but thats one I would definitely like to see return.

Although what made the song great live was arguably Aaron's guitar during the quiet middle section. So good..

Seeing as it is followed by you know what you are on the album there could be pretty much any other hard hitting NIN song coming after it during a live show. I'm all about with teeth myself and would rank it as my second favorite NIN album after the fragile. It may not be the best, but I listen to it alot as it flows so well and feels rather short.

the line begins to blur is a song that I'd love to hear more often, aswell as getting smaller (I give a shit about flip flop flip :P ).

man i am excited about the new album, and yes i will go to the show, but God Damn...there sure isn't much about this setlist that has changed. Same old songs since 94 except a couple of new ones for this album or that one. i was expecting something different somehow.
dont get me wrong. im still thrilled. the setlist so far is a little underwhelming though.

These are just festival shows....I'm sure things might change up a bit come this fall for the arena tour.

I'm sure it'll change. We'll see MUCH longer sets, I imagine. Maybe not SUPER long, but Trent seems to like to perform for extended periods when it comes to their headlining shows.

Also, I can't let it go. That video for "Came Back Haunted" would benefit SO MUCH from having the full version of the song. That abrupt shift from the intro to the first verse just doesn't sound good.

I hope you're right, jake and alrea. and the reason i logged on is to amend and or defend that post....
im THRILLED that NIN is touring again, it's fucking awesome. and i got broken at 12 yrs old when it came out...im a legitimate nin nerd.
So dont get me wrong. But good god, i dont need another "greatest hits" show. The LITS show (lights aside...i would have watched that shit with the fucking Monkees playing) had a much more interesting setlist. I just...trent said some things about rethinking what nin could be, and to me, that is NOT playing head like a hole and terrible lie and closer and hurt.

And Alrea, i sure am hoping this is just the first leg of the tour. it almost has to be. SURELY they'll play tulsa and dallas etc

ImTheWiseJanitor
08-14-2013, 10:52 PM
Well, the festival shows have almost always been consistently singles and a few new digs, plus a couple random songs peppered in. Looking at the festival run of setlists really doesn't tell us much at all about what headlining show setlists will be like. :P It may have the same number of singles, minus one or two, but they make up for it by generally playing a few selections from all over the catalog.

What I really wanna know is how much variation there'll be between Tension 2013 shows. I imagine that due to the stage production, they're pretty limited, but the last time we saw NIN perform was on a tour that probably had the most diverse setlists in NIN history from show to show, so maybe Trent will try to keep some of that going by switching things up a liiittle more night to night.

Even if that's not the case, I'm still stoked. Ready to have another memory and another tour poster on my wall!

Edit: "Find My Way" is one of my favorite NIN tracks ever. I can't WAIT to hear that baby on record.

Just listened to Tetsuo for the first time after seeing it mentioned a thousand times on here. I was just under the impression it was a T-Rez remix of something or something from a score and I didn't recognize the title. Was it released as Nine Inch Nails (as its listed on youtube)?

Its amazing. Its like Ghosts part V.

Well, while us NIN internet nerds would love a set of b-sides and fairly obscure album tracks, you've got to remember that at any given show, the majority of the crowd is seeing the band for the first time. It would be a shame to rob them of the chance to see Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, Closer or Hurt. Of course if any or all of those are missing from the shows I see, I'm 100% okay with that, but there will be a large contingent of the crowd that would leave the show very disappointed. The fact is, I'm guessing the arena shows WILL feature sets largely similar to what's being played at the festivals. However, the shows will almost certainly be at least half an hour longer and what's done with that extra time is what could please us die hards. No need to add any more popular songs for the masses. Give us half an hour of the stuff we haven't heard a thousand times and that will balance out the familiar stuff and leave everyone happy.

It's credited as NIN, yes.

http://www.ninwiki.com/Tetsuo

It is notable as not only the first new Nine Inch Nails track since The Slip (http://www.ninwiki.com/The_Slip)'s release 2 years earlier, but also the first NIN release to have no involvement from Alan Moulder (http://www.ninwiki.com/Alan_Moulder) since "Burn (http://www.ninwiki.com/Burn_(song))" came out in 1994.

Who thinks Hesitation Marks will be a farewell album for NIN?

It's sad to think about, but I'm thinking it could be.
I know there are artists who have released albums well into their 50's, but we have always known TR to be a quality over quantity type of guy.
Plus a young family and other opportunities (scoring, producing), I think this may be the last time we ever see new NIN.

dlb
08-15-2013, 09:14 AM
I like to think that this might be his last proper album but that we will see some more music (EPs, single songs under the NIN name) over the years. He should defnitely go down the route of scoring and producing more if he's really that concerned about his age and relevance as he likes to hint every now and then.

Trent is full of surprises and I believe we will hear a lot from him in the future. This is barely the end. Not for NIN and never for Trent.

pigpen
08-15-2013, 09:19 AM
I think the fact that he's already tried to walk away from it, even going as far as having a "WAVE GOODBYE" tour, and yet couldn't leave it alone
speaks volumes. I mean, obviously he knows his limitations as a live performer, but I do expect music to continue to be made by TR and under
the umbrella of Nine Inch Nails. Like I said before, I think it'd be great if he made a whole tour out of The Bridge School/Still type live format.
Cellos, Piano, Acoustic guitars, electronic drum tracks, etc. Yeah, it'd be leaving the whole stadium thing behind, but I think it could be a
great way to breathe new life into the music..

NIN will never go away, maybe in a touring sense but it'll never stop I don't think.
If anything we'll get one more "rock" record and then he'll slowly start releasing still type records IMO.

I think he will realize after this touring cycle that a lot of the stuff he's singing isn't as relevant anymore.

"26 years on my way to hell" was sung over 20 years ago.

Also, I've always had the feeling that he hates spending summer in Europe. They're usually touring Europe in summer because it's festival season, which means he often missed nice sunny California summer and had to spend it in rainy and cold (although Europe isn't really this rainy and cold, just when Trent is here, I guess) Europe.

Good thing I'll see them in Italy, the weather's usually nice there. And there are no stupid festival people, crews and german bands.

Nah, he does that every time they start the European leg. Last time he wrote on twitter "After the first days in Europe is it bad that I already want to go home?" or something like that. While Rob, for example, seems to appreciate it when he's in Europe, Trent's just pointing out the things that piss him off.

edit: also, this generalising.. they are in Belgium and write "Welcome to Europe". Well, it's a LITTLE bit bigger and more diverse than that. But I guess we Europeans are the same when it comes to the US.

This. Glad to see some things never change, though. On the other hand, you'd think a guy like Trent would love Europe, since we don't have a lot of thinge he's always critiziced about 'Murica. He's probably just always got the wrong impression of Europe, especially in the German speaking countries because of shitty festivals, bands, crews, people, fans (or lack thereof) and promoters.

Exactly. Europe is arguably a lot more diverse than the U.S. I want to call myself "European", but it's an odd label when there are so many other cultures on the continent whose traits aren't shared by the culture of your home country.

For what it's worth, the one time I've seen the band live (Roskilde Festival 2009), he seemed to enjoy himself.

I wonder why he hasn't done something like this. After the 2007 tour he said "at this point, I want to switch things around a bit. Nine Inch Nails as a rock band configuration, we've done it and we've done it again. I see other ways I can present the material in concert, more challenging, something new. I don't want it to go stale." Yes. I understand that the popular singles are best presented in this rock band confirguration, but how awesome would a "Still" section be? Acoustic, rare songs, reworked songs on piano. Even Hurt could be played in this setting, along with And All That Could Have Been, other instrumentals and Ghosts etc.

One can dream. Maybe one day.

Nothing Studios might have once been a funeral home years ago, but it is New Orleans, and probably used to be a ton of other business's as well. To me it used to be one of the greatest studios in the US, and was home to a great deal of my "Desert Island" music, which is why I have the souvenir.

I know Trent took the door from LA to NOLA (when they demolished the Tate house), but my understanding is he didn't take it with him when he left NOLA. Whether it's still on the old studio is another question.

I understood nothing of that. Haha. I assume it does some processing to split the left and right "speaker" of the audio to the 7 speakers? Or something? And why is that bad?

Tempting, they seem to get really great reviews, but they're a bit out of the range I'm looking at. I've never been a big headphone user, but I've been wanting to take some more time listening to music lately, but if that doesn't pan out I don't want to be out much.

I always thought it'd be cool if on any given NIN album there'd be a commentary much like what a movie has on DVD/Blu-Ray, such a commentary could be behind the scenes technoblabber from Trent & Co. about all the production and engineering that went into crafting the music.

Why the hell don't artists do things like this? would seem like an amazing thing for the fans not to mention lots of great insight. I know I'd love to hear it.

I don't need to know much about the lyrical content of course, that's ultimately up for us to guess at and decipher and make our own, part of why Trent doesn't like to allude to what the lyrics are usually about but at least he could go over some of the song construction, that'd be neat!

That's actually not an uncommon thing these days for albums - it's a fantastic potential bonus thing, the only issue is getting an artist to have something to say about every track, and something pertinent and interesting, plus them WANTING to dissect a track. Someone like Trent would probably always shy away from such a thing as he doesn't do much talking about his songs. Now, a disc for Ghosts with the whole team on, that would be neat

Is there some kind of vocal sample played during the chorus of Gave Up when Robin and the other member do the "Smashed up my sanity" line? Either that or some vocal effect on the microphone? I've always wondered how Gave Up always had that similar distorted "gremlin" vocal thing going on that generally sounds the same.

I spent all of yesterday fiddling with Hyperpower, and I'm still shellshocked from having to hear the finale of that element again and again.

As day-ruining as it is, it's curious how some of those backing tracks in Hyperpower tell a bit of a story all on their own. IIRC it's that track which consists of cows and insects early on (you'd never hear it in the full mix), then voices, then distant explosions and screaming, then close bomb drops and yelling, then VERY LOUD gunfire and ending in a horribly distorted shriek.

Yeah, that was kind of amazing, almost made me think some of the multitracks could stand on their own (and they did, as a part of Vessel was used for that horrible alarm in one of the ARG sites). Also, I listened closely to the distorted voice that says "hyperpower!", and it sounds like it's Trent with his voice filtered to sound like a crowd.

Believe it or not, the plugin that he used to make his voice sound like a crowd is the same one he used when saying "God given". It just has the settings tweaked differently. I've seen it used to make whispers out of normal speech in post production before as well.

Ok...yeah...y'all are right. WE all wanna see B-Sides. Everyone else wants to see closer, HLAH, THTF etc. Even my little bro who has been listening to NIN since broken said HE'D be pissed if he went to see nails and didnt hear terrible lie, etc.

Secondly, Hesitation Marks...i don't think it will be the last nails album. And i damn sure don't think this will be the last tour.
In fact, i think before it's all said and done, we WILL see Trent Reznor preforming, sitting at a piano, a-la still/Bridge school benefit. I honestly thought we'd see this sooner than later. I DID think that LITS/NINJA/Wave Goodbye WERE going to be the last shows, but that's because there's just a starkness to NIN...i don't know how to explain it...i believed him. Ozzy he's not, you know?

Thirdly, does ANYONE believe that trent didn't know that the NOLA house was the manson/tate house? i was watching one of those horror movies where the price on the house is really cheap because johnny killed suzy with a chainsaw there back in the day and blah blah blah, and asked my girl if she thought it was true what tr said, that he didnt know...she called bullshit.

And Morphine by MJ sounds like an NIN song period. not just part of it...the whole thing. i fucking love it.

Finally, i'm gonna start checking this thread more often. i didn't know how much fun was being had without me.

I wonder if HBO passed on it because they thought it might get them in hot water? Granted, HBO will give you sex and violence all day long, but they are very careful with the social commentary. I wonder how TR would handle writing an album that wasn't a concept album, but also wasn't at all about himself.
We have YZ, and then the rest of his albums, sans ghosts, are pretty much entirely introspective creations.
It'd be interesting to see TR write songs about things he sees as compelling or polarizing in one way or the other.

Like, Car Crashes, The tradition of opening windows when people pass away, etc.

Over the weekend I picked up Further Down the Spiral, March of the Pigs (single) and And All That Could Have Been (CD) for $2 total at a local record store. I have owned all of these at one time but no longer did......so it kind of made my day.

Someone posted this on the NIN subreddit. I thought it was pretty interesting to see how similar yet different they are. He's even holding the mic exactly the same in both pics.

Obvious musical reasons aside, this is pretty much why Trent is sitting fairly comfortably at the top of my list of artists to look up to. To see someone go from being so completely drugged out of their mind that they couldn't sing their own words to...well...this? An Oscar/Grammy winning composer who's pushing 50, in (it appears) amazing physical shape, and still going strong with a career that's spanned over two decades? Damn, that's inspiring (and why there's a lot of NIN on my running/gym playlists).

Those first two NIN shows changed my fucking life!!!

I've seen countless shows over the years but nothing, not one damn single thing can compare to the two shows I've seen so far this week. Regardless of how many streams or tapings I've watched, my mind and body was not prepared for those shows. Those shows exceeded every expectation and dream imaginable. God-damn-fucking-WOW!

I just wish it was possible for me to see NIN sooner than this, and goodness knows I tried., But hey, those were my breaks and I guess it made getting to Scala all the more sweeter.

Yeah, 25 into 26 had some of the best and worst moments of my life so far. Here's hoping it's at least a little bit of smooth sailings for the most part. :) Thanks though friend!

In 2009, a lot of terrible shit happened. Trent put NIN on hold/end/hiatus (I knew he'd be back someday, but it still bummed me out), I lost one parent to a disease they battled with for years, and the other had a stroke and was almost paralyzed, resulting in my becoming a caretaker for almost every spare moment of my life. Without baring too much of my soul on a public forum to a bunch of relative strangers (I've been posting sporadically since the AATCHB days, but I've never really been a board regular), I've felt pretty numb for a lot of these past few years, and it's taken me a long time to recuperate.

It's a very strange thing, going through awful times and not having new NIN to relate to emotionally on some level like I've always been used to. It was probably a good thing though, some parts of the catalogue I couldn't bear to replay for fear of a total breakdown.

Anyhow, here I am, four years down the line. Long story short, things are better. I've grieved. My remaining parent has recuperated enough to have a degree of self-autonomy sufficient enough that we've been able to move apart (though I still help with whatever is needed a few times a week). I'm in a new relationship with a wonderful lady. That hasn't happened in years.

To have Trent come out now, resurrect NIN, and most importantly, to put out an album that reflects on the dark times in his life, all he's been through, an album that can get downright happy at times...fuck, the parallels boggle my mind. It's the perfect time for what is shaping up to be - at least for me - the perfect NIN album for right now, when I too am feeling better than I have in years.

That said, I braved Still for the first time in half a decade, yesterday. Holy shit do AATCHB and Leaving Hope still hit hard. But I'm glad I was able to do it.

By the time TR retires (let's say/hope not before 2030) his two sons will be old enough to follow in their daddy's footsteps. They even look like him (at least from the back) and if Trent can get them into music they're gonna kick so much ass. Having TR as your dad is probably the coolest thing ever, I hope they're no going to grow up liking dubstep and thinking their dad is lame...

I know this random thought is about Trent's private life/kids, and we should be careful with what we say, but this has just crossed my mind.

What would the Trent of the TDS era think of "Everything"?

No way to tell... On one hand I remember him saying - back then - that fun-loving surf pop-rock songs weren't his stuff (as in, mood-like, I'm heavily paraphrasing here). On the other hand, he may as well listen to it and wonder "how the fuck does this guy do all this shit ? I could try something like that".
