What songs comfort you?
Of all songs, this one comforts me the most. It puts me in a warm place (pardon the pun) even though it's sinister.
Danzig - Ashes
Glenn has described it like this:
ASHES - It's dark and moody, but Glenn differentiates, "It's not a depressing song, it's a melancholy song. It's happy depression, sad and happy at the same time. I don't like to say it's romantic but it is, everyone has different sides to their personality. 'Let It Be Captured' on the last record was a really sad melancholy song but that got heavy at the end and this is a mind trip, it doesn't."
And the burning of the embers
Slowly down inside
I will keep you warm, this darkness
As the ashes die
I will call your soul in winter, I will keep you mine
I will call your soul in winter as the ashes die
I will keep you broke and splintered, I will keep you tight
I will keep you cold and dark 'til the end of time
And the soul is slowly seeping
As the years go by
Will you keep me cold and darkened
'Til the end of time?
I will keep you safe from summer, I will be entwined
I will keep you cold and darkened
'Til the end of time
I will kiss your burning embers, I will watch them die
I will catch your soul escaping
As the ashes fly
I will keep you safe from summer, I will be entwined
I will keep you cold and darkened
'Til the end of time
There are so many others I could post, but I can pretty safely promise that no one on this thread has ever heard this before, since this was a relatively obscure band that only existed for a few years in the late '90s before getting completely fucked over by Capitol Records and disbanding. But between the lyrics and the music, it's just a very soothing song. I hope someone will actually take the 3:20 needed to give it a shot.
This song has a pretty surreal calming effect on me, but specifically this part at 4:23...
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right.
I don't mind.
It's funny how one song in particualar makes me feel comfortable above most others that have this ability. It's Mark Lanegan's one hundred days. Probably one of my most favorite songs of all time:
Its hard not to dive deep into the NIN catalog here. Ones that come immeadiatly to mind are And All That Could Have Been and Warm Place. Both mood and lyrics of AATCHB really strike home with me. Warm Place's tone and its almost, no pun entended, broken feel are something that feels really familiar to me. Good god im glad the St Paul show was the first time Warm Place was played (outside the WG shows) because had I known it was coming i dont think it would have the same impact. ¡MIND BLOWN!
Tool is really comforting too, the above mentioned H. and also songs like Lateralus, Jimmy, Pushit (hell all of Ænima for that matter). Salvial, and all of Lateralus for that matter. Basically everything except for the staggering 10,000 Days and Opiate/Undertow because those albums just get me worked up.
Republic in its entirety has always been a comfort album for me. I won't make any arguments about relative quality vs the rest of the NO discography (as they are probably more suited for the Controversial Opinions thread), but I enjoy every song on that album and it always puts me in a good mood.
Note: I do not identify with any religion. I don't believe in God, but I don't believe that there's zero possibility that there's more to the universe than I'll understand before my body shits the bed. That said...holy fucking, this song. Wow.

Gary Numan - Magic
When I sleep
I slide into
Some heaven
But no one is there.
If I believed,
If I should wonder,
If I forgive
Then would you come for me?
When I sleep
I hear sad words
Songs of God
That show me the lie.
"I'll keep you safe,
I'll keep you warm and
I'll keep you here,
Alone, forever."
And I believe in faith and magic.
And I believe in love and wonder.
And I'll believe in you
When you come for me.
And I'll believe in you
When the world comes apart.
