There's only two Fragile songs not currently being played that I'd have over TBCD. I'm looking forward to joining you finally, or The Mark Has Been Made. Never gonna happen though unfortunately!
It's tough. I love TBCD too and it looks/sounds amazing from those videos posted.

Thanks for sharing this.

I wonder if TR has changed his haircut. Because it seems quite different than comparing to his haircut during the Festivals 2013 Tour:

Ooo, nice.

I was thinking that TBCD and All Time Low would sound too much alike together in the same set, but no worries there. I do wish he would play around like that with HLAH and THTF — would make hearing them every damn tour so much easier to take.

Edit: damn, quoted the wrong video. That's what happens when you keep Flash turned off all the time.

I was there. They did in fact play Reptile, Big Come Down, Somewhat Damaged, Various Methods of Escape, In Two, A Warm Place, and Sanctified!! I have Reptile, Warm Place, Big Come Down, and 95% of Sanctified on video too!! =) AWESOME show but a little weak of a crowd imo. The guys yelling during the quiet parts of Hurt was really disrespectful. Trent seemed to spit as soon as Hurt finished as if he was mad but I don't know for sure. Great show, everyone was on point, visuals were stunning, TR sounded great. I enjoyed myself even with the no alcohol policy. =P

I wonder if that's why the crowd was more tame. I'm not from the area. Who was there? It seemed like Penn State students and people coming in from Pittsburgh.

He absolutely does. He nailed it like no other. He got fucking lucky on the Beside You In Time DVD recording too – he managed to smash his guitar into his amp and create this pretty awesome sound which I can only compare to massive electricity pylons being twanged.

Uploading "Sanctified" as I type this!

He seemed to spit shortly after Hurt was over as he walked behind the keyboards to walk off stage. Hopefully someone has a complete video of Hurt to confirm this.

I wonder why they didn't do a Pittsburgh and Philadelphia show instead of Pittsburgh, DC, NJ, and State College. Philadelphia shows always draw great crowds for NIN. State College is the same distance for me as the DC and NJ shows so either way I was going to drive 30-45 minutes more than I normally do for Philly shows. It was definitely worth the trip and I know RITC has the whole show captured so I'm a happy camper!

They played Made in America in Philly. Festivals have things in the contracts that say you can't play a show there for a certain amount of time. That's why Philly was skipped on this tour.

Ahhh that explains it, thank you! I didn't attend Made in America because I just prefer 100% fan crowds instead of mixed bags. I rather be at a concert with 100% ETS fans because we're the true NIN fan base imo. =P Fingers crossed for next time.

For those who have been to shows, how loud do they play? I thought LITS was a little on the quiet side and I'm hoping Tension is a little more loud. The best show I went to was on the 2005 club tour where it had an extremely loud and powerful sound. I want that experience again someday.

*edit my seats are kinda far away too (I couldn't afford expensive tickets right now) which is why I'm a little worried about volume, its of course much louder when you are closer up.

It isn't loud. I don't know how else to explain the volume other than to say that you are able to hear yourself sing, even during the heavier songs.

It really depends on where you are. When I was on the floor, at the rail, it was loud enough that unless someone was yelling directly into my ear to talk to me, I couldn't really hear them. When I was at a seat, I could hear the conversation of the row of people in front of me.

It varies.

In my experience/opinion Cleveland, OH was borderline excruciatingly loud and crystal clear (adding to any pain factor, with no earplugs), and University Park, PA was just barely loud enough. I'd rather it be loud and clear as it were in Cleveland, OH. You should always bring earplugs, just in case, especially if you're gonna be closer to the stage, be it in seats or on the floor.

About clarity vs loudness thing, I as well REALLY HATE IT when bands push their PA's too far (happens all the time at this venue The Bottletree in my town, sometimes they push it so much even clean guitars sound like they're going through distortion petals) but I've never known any NIN show I've gone too to push the PA too hard. Even the extremely loud club shows were still clear, I'm pretty sure Trent brings top of the line PA's, and I'm pretty sure he could push them a little more than he does without distortion.

I suspect with modern equipment it's more a problem of pushing the venue acoustics too hard. I'd love to see NIN in a really good theater someday so I can hear everything (though I'd also be happy just to have a DVD of this tour).

'Only' was a great live song IMHO when TR and Aaron played guitars on it in previous tours. Always had the coolest visuals too.

Now not so much now (Robin can't play it for shit- lets not even get into that generic intro solo during LITS). The crowd can still get into the song so doesn't bother me too much when it's played.

Only was a big hit single and one of the most well known NIN songs, and RWIB is a quiet ballad that only fans know about. Casual fans who come to shows want to hear Closer, only, HLAH... They don't care about RWIB. They care about the songs they know.

The people saying they'd rather see it replaced are probably people who have been to enough shows since WT tour to have seen it nearly every single show. It's been heavy in rotation. I'd assume that's the #1 reason they're saying "trade it for another song from WT". Not because they hate it.
I like the idea of having just one "this song WILL play" staple per album, and having the others rotate in and out. We have 2 for PHM: HLAH and Terrible Lie, 1 for Broken: Wish, 2 for TDS: MOTP and Hurt, 1 for TF: Somewhat Damaged, 1 for WT: THTF, 1 for YZ: Survivalism, 1 for The Slip: 1,000,000. These are the "casual fan knows these songs" songs (no song on The Fragile is really casual fan other than Starfuckers, which seems to have been retired at this point, so ok yeah Somewhat Damaged that works).

as far as radio and casual fan recognition goes, 'only' was even more of a hit than 'the hand that feeds' was... i never listen to the radio, but i've caught it several times while in cabs/hotel alarms, etc. i've seen it done at bar karaoke, etc.

i'm sure it's been discussed ad nauseum, but arena shows (and festivals) by design, tend to appeal more to the casual fan. sure, there are plenty of deep cuts rotated in and out to make us happy, moreso than festivals when they have to WIN new fans by playing all the hits, but when it comes to selling thousands of tickets, you have to please everyone. sure, you can chuck in a few really deep/underrated cuts in there alongside the new material, but you have to make plenty of room for the hits if you want to keep the numbers high.

they already took 'closer' and live favorite 'gave up' out of the set for this tour, so they generally have to make up for it with march/hurt/hand/head/survivalism and occasionally only...

sorry if this has been talked about in the thread already, but has anyone been keeping track of the best quality concert videos on youtube? maybe a playlist or a user that had some particularly good videos. more interested in the visuals than the sound in this case. i wanna show my gf, who wasn't able to go to the concerts. I don't hate it. Its just that there are waaaaay better songs on WT than Only. Only is just an OK song. Not one that should be played EVERY show IMO. I mean, once the setlist got to Only, you could tell, THTF then HLAH then encore.

But the clapping. It's like we're one with Trent. ;)
At least he doesn't stand there and say "Sing it!" That's when I'd throw my water bottle at him.

Listening to the Through the Never soundtrack made me glad I was never an obsessive Metallica fan. I'd have to stab myself everytime Hetfield says that.

Was Only that big of a hit? I don't follow that stuff too closely. I remember Hand that Feeds being huge when WT came out but that was a while ago.
Almost everyone seems to know (and sing along with) the chorus each time I've seen them play it.

Everyone loves that chorus. So angsty. It's prototypical NIN. Drum, bass, synth, distorted guitar, profanity...I find it ridiculous that y'all bitch about it, Hurt, Head Like a Hole, THTF, etc when Gave Up and Closer were already taken out of the rotation. Casual fans. People are complaining already about too much HM songs...

Don't misunderstand my post. I wasn't complaining about the song at all. I wonder if it's an age thing? I'm in my thirties and people I talk to still think if NIN as the band with the fuck you like an animal song.

are you being literal? do people actually still say "the fuck you like an animal song" (non-ironically)? not disbelieving you - i was actually wondering about that the other day. i thought maybe it was a caricature or archaic.

as for "only", i heard a group of people that were disappointed that they didn't play it after one show this tour. (they seemed happy with the show, but were like, "why didn't they play 'only'?") oddly, my gf HATES "only". it's the sole track she complains about when i listen to NIN.

Depends on how casual they are, but yes I've heard that. Usually not from someone who owns an album or two and is going to a show. But the people who know them mostly from the radio.

I guess casual fans love it. At the end of the day, it's about how many tickets are sold. If the set list was a hardcore fan's dream set, they would be playing theaters. I'll just have to catch more shows so I can hear a wide variety of NIN live.

Almost everyone seems to know (and sing along with) the chorus each time I've seen them play it.

It does have a pretty easy chorus though. Even halfway through the first round you know all the words even if it's the first time you've ever heard the song. I can imagine the guy who's been dragged along/doesn't know much about the band but wants in on the group singing vibe will like it for that reason.

So I was at the Nashville show last night, and anyone who doesn't like the backup singers can go die in a fucking fire. They are so fucking amazing. What I was most impressed with was how "into it" they were, at times they rocked out harder than any other member of the band. I'm pretty sure Lisa was headbanging hard as hell during Survivalism. All the complaints had to be from either metal kids or racists. I'm more inclined to rag on TR's performance last night than theirs. They owned that shit.

To add to this general "they will or won't plays certain songs", I think a lot of it has to do with what's already been done and been officially / or professionally unofficially released. Songs like RWIB and other tracks from WT, YZ, The Fragile, and so on have been performed and in most cases a great visual record exists. If they are planning on an official video release for this tour (hopefully shot in Vegas over two nights when I'm there) I'm sure he wants it to be as different as possible. That said, I'm on the WITT and Perfect Drug bandwagon 1,000,000%.

Regardless, are there any plans to put together a fan release such as was done with LITS and Wave Goodbye? Anyone heard anything?

That's probably going to be difficult due to the fact that there isn't an open taping policy this time around. There's been some good audio and video captured on this tour, but I have a feeling there may not be ENOUGH material for a grand release like the last two tours.

The Vegas show had a relaxed camera policy. You could record whatever you wanted provided the cameras were small and handheld. I seem to recall Trent posting a blog saying "Don't bring a whole television studio with you."

It's really one of my favorites (especially off of With_Teeth). I also REALLY dig Discipline though... and both of these can possibly be explained by the fact that I am a HUGE LCD Soundsystem fan as well who doesn't shy away from corniness. To each there own.

"unique" has a neutral meaning, too, which makes sense in the context of rob's tweet. the setup of visuals for this show was not equivalent to any of the past shows, which is what he said. he didn't say it'd be extra awesome. remember that rob's tweet was merely a response to a question. also, since rob is involved with visuals, i'm guessing he was mostly thinking about things from that perspective.

There's really no reason that "Somewhat Damaged" isn't in every setlist. That shit is so heavy and tight sounding on this tour!

LOL. It wasn't played last night because I was supposed to be there. See, every time I've seen NIN since '06, they have omitted "Somewhat Damaged." That is in spite of the fact that it's one of the songs I'd quite like to see.

I was very much going to be at Mountain Oasis, but late-in-the-game conflicts kept me at home. So, by cosmic fate, the show I would have been at had no "Somewhat Damaged." Actually, that was the weakest set list of the tour so far, if you ask me. I'm kinda glad I didn't make the 7 hour trek, because, if I had, right now I'd be doing a whole lot of trying to convince myself it was worth it.

EDIT: No I do not actually think I somehow "willed" it not to happen. I'm just saying, "just my luck."

Crap, after seeing those photos I wish we'd gone to Mountain Oasis! When I was reading about it I just assumed that the venues were all super tiny and you'd have to wait in line for hours to have any chance at getting in to see NIN. Oh well, at least they only played one song that I didn't see at the Raleigh show.

We Take Mystery (To Bed) (With Gary Numan)

They most likely played this because of this:

"We Take Mystery (To Bed)" is a 1982 song by the British musician Gary Numan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Numan). Released as the second single from his I, Assassin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I,_Assassin) album, it reached number nine in the UK Singles Chart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Singles_Chart) (the biggest of three Top 20 hits from the album and Numan's last Top 10 hit to date).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Take_Mystery_(To_Bed)#cite_note-1) It holds the distinction of having the shortest chart life of any Top 10 hit ever since the official UK chart was expanded to a Top 75, at just four weeks. Two music videos were made for the song; one being for the American market which begins outdoors with Numan and his band driving through New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City) in an open-top car before cutting to a studio performance of the song,[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Take_Mystery_(To_Bed)#cite_note-2) the other was an entirely studio-based video for the UK market featuring Numan by himself in a variety of costumes.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Take_Mystery_(To_Bed)#cite_note-3)
A different version of the song (known as the Early Version) is available as a bonus track on the 12" single (and subsequently on reissues of the album on CD) this early version was recorded in 1981 as part of early sessions for the album, I, Assassin. There is also another early version, which was discovered on the studio master tapes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_tapes) when Beggars Banquet Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beggars_Banquet_Records) remastered the album in 1999, though this has never been released.

The extended version features a lengthy fretless bass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fretless_bass) solo by Pino Palladino (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pino_Palladino).

I think the meaning of Tension is more about the constant feel of the show. There is no loud part/quiet part/loud part dynamic this time around. There's also no full blast, all out rage to it either. The whole show sort of lives in the middle ground. That's also the way I'd describe Hesitation Marks. Maybe Tension was a runner-up for album names.

Are we really so rage deprived this time? I was already feeling winded after Somewhat Damaged.

Or you could mean compared to 90s NIN, which I didn't experience first hand. I just have to take everybody's word for that…

Because Lights In The Sky 2.0 just doesn't have the same ring to it!

All seriousness I think this was asked in another thread, kind of follows the "depressive feeling" (can't think of the right word right now) of previous tour theme names such as:

- Hate 1990
- Further Down The Spiral/Self Destruct
- Fragility
- Wave Goodbye (kind of obvious, at that time anyways)
- (LITS doesn't necessarily fill that pattern but was a song off the latest album and considering the lighting and production it fits the tour theme)

It's probably something that was mentioned and seemed to "stick" with the NIN camp.

My $0.02 on it.

not counting the encore, i felt there was was pretty clear (thought not necessarily strict) loud/quiet/loud dynamic to the concert. TL, 1,000,000, and MOTP at the beginning and wish and HLAH at the end, right?

i don't think the tour name has much to do with the tour in particular, beyond the fact that the tour has a lot of the new album. isn't the tour name usually some reference to the new album (in cases where there was a new album)?

i mentioned it before, but "hesitation" and "tension" have definitions that are similar.

Haha you suck. :P

I'm scouring the whole thing looking for a typo. And on my phone of course where I can barely read the fine print on the bottom. Being annoyed with the your/you're typo that is in TWO different NIN lyric books, I took it as a challenge to find this.

The heavy emphasis on HM isn't surprising, but it's really weird seeing how many of the usual suspects are missing. Aside from Hurt, Survivalism is the closest thing here to a "casual fan" song.

No March of the Pigs, no Wish … just The Wretched to represent the heavy side.

Intriguing — gonna have to listen to this playlist in the car tomorrow.

What if the ACL show is what Trent had wanted the typical Tension setlist to be? No March of the Pigs, Terrible Lie etc... I don't want to sound like I know what Trent is thinking and what not, just maybe this is the rethinking of what NIN could be. I dunno. He probably just wanted to showcase the new material. The set looks awesome though. The only requests I have is Everything and In Two somewhere in there.

I think the HM heavy setlist is what the record label wanted. I agree with wanting In Two, but I'd almost rather hear it tomorrow when here's room to move around.

Professional recordings of I Would For You and Various Methods Of Escape, woohoo!

And also, finally not opening with Copy Of A.

ACL will only air an hour of the full set. Dont get your hopes up.

I'm sure the whole thing will turn up somewhere.

Because somebody from the ACL crew is just going to leak it?

Or maybe because this is airing on pbs and this has probably the least amount of profanities and the least amount of "heavy" music out of any NIN show I've seen. When this was announced I pretty much expected the show to be the typical tension setlist with certain songs removed. I'm surprised to see The Wretched in there, but other than that if you asked me a week ago to predict the setlist for this show, I would have been very very close.

I expected at least Wish in there somewhere. No THTF or HLAH I got. Never the less, pretty great setlist.

I would expect either one of them before Wish by a landslide. Those are both heavily played on the radio and completely clean. Wish is neither. I still wasn't surprised to see them not in there though. Only surprise was The Wretched. Although now that I think about it Sharlotte and Lisa supposedly figured in heavy on that song (wasn't played at the show I was at) so maybe that's why.

Actually i I think everything on that setlist is either from HM or features the backup singers (or both of course) which makes total sense.

THTF has pretty heavy political connotations that PBS would likely want to avoid, though, due to the way Trent would present it during the Bush years. I'm honestly kind of surprised that The Wretched made it into the set, but I'm almost 100% sure it won't air in the special. I really hope that All Time Low and Various Methods of Escape at least make the cut - In This Twilight, too, because fuck you if you don't think that's a gorgeous song in every situation.

For anyone who was there, did they play Black Noise after While I'm Still Here?

When Radiohead was on, they dropped the audio when Thom sang "fucked up" on one of the songs they did. It comes with the territory.

No Black Noise? That song was unexpectedly awesome live. I'm sad. :(

hopefully we'll get a full Tension home video.

keep in mind though this setlist has confirmed they've at least been working on All the Love in the World. Of course we can say the same about Everything.....

Are you sure? I could of sworn they went straight into a shortened version of Black Noise.

They cut Black Noise? Really? Where would they do that? The two are even more joined at the hip live than they are in the album.

I want to see the bottom of that sheet of A4, where they usually put the reference number for the setlist.

Cos anyone can type shit.
