So I've been hooked to Skrillex for the past two months or so and for the most part I cant stand dubstep unless its his stuff. He's got a great take on this style of music and I even had the pleasure of catching his live at when he was here in Seattle. If you like dubstep in any fashion and haven't heard his stuff yet, do yourself a favor and jump over to YouTube for a little bit

Sonny is a huge Aphex Twin fan, so I am not surprised you find similarities there. Aphex Twin was the whole reason he left From First to Last so he could start and electronic musical career. Also, HEALTH and Aphex Twin are the shit.

His production value is top notch, but his music panders to the "Bro Step" scene too much for me to really get into it.

SKRILLEX NOMINATED FOR FIVE GRAMMYS

FIRST ELECTRONIC MUSICIAN TO RECEIVE BEST NEW ARTIST NOD, AMONG TOP 6 MOST NOMINATED ARTISTS THIS YEAR

Few had a bigger 2011 than Skrillex. Replete with 2 EPs, the cover of SPIN Magazine, and over 300 performances on several sold-out world tours, Sonny Moore capstones an incredible year with five Grammy nominations, more than almost any other artist. The Atlantic/Big Beat artist has been exceptionally active throughout the last 12 months while simultaneously launching his own record label, OWSLA, as well. These are the 23 year-old's first Grammy nominations, and honors include Best New Artist (a first for an electronic musician), Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album for Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, Best Remixed Recording for his remix of Benny Benassi's "Cinema" and Best Music Video for "First of the Year (Equinox)" which has garnered over 20 million views on Youtube.

Congratulations, Skrillex, for figuring out that the majority of Westerners only appreciate the lower levels of a song, and simultaneously are thankful when they aren't socially pressured into dancing.

I've still to find anyone who can give me a pinned down definition of what dubstep is as a genre, it seems to range from random noise to top quality electronica the ilk seen when rock musicians started turning on to electro. Anyone give me a few more pointers so I don't sound like an oblivious dick whenever someone mentions dubstep?

Hahaha, this is funny because there was a bus advertisement here in Vancouver with a girl that looks like Skrllex, I forget what it was advertising. Mt girlfriend and I were waiting for the bus, and she said "That girl on the ad looks like a guy" and I said "That girl looks like skrillex!" and she had no idea who I was talking about, so I googled the image on my phone and she saw the resemblence right away and agreed. I find it hilarious there is a website devoted to girls that look like him, that is too funny.

Asside from that, I don't care for dubstep really, but skrillex is the closest to the genre I can tolerate. And even then so, that's not saying much. I actually just had a conversation with a friend a week ago who wanted me to check out the first of the year song/video, and up until coming to this thread I totally forgot, so thanks for posting the video I actually really enjoyed the song, didn't think I would but it's definatly one of his better songs. And the stuff with KoRn is pretty decent too.

His first EP wasn't all just Dubstep. There was a lot of House and Electronica on there too. I kinda liked the stuff he was working on before he was Skrillex. Not the From First to Last Stuff, but the "Sonny" stuff in between FFTL and Skrillex. I think that was the best music he ever made.

I agree with this. Not hating, but it's just popular because it caught on with the hipster crowd...I'd rather listen to real DJ's than guys that just press effects. Guy has talent though, and I will admit, the Lucima video featuring his remix of La Roux's "In For The Kill" is pretty great. Possibly only because it contains Kate Compton, who is ridiculously beyond hot, stripping down to nothing.

OBVIOUSLY NSFW AT ALL.

Yeah, he clearly has no idea what he's talking about. The "hipster crowd" might as well be a synonym for "people who read Pitchfork" and Pitchfork would absolutely tear apart his godawful music if it weren't for the fact that they don't even mention him on their site because he's so fucking worthless.

Reading through this mostly I'm just disappointed Aphex Twin and HEALTH have been mentioned in the same thread as this no talent hack. If this guy is really an Aphex Twin fan he'd stop making music because I can guarantee you Richard D. James and everyone else with a shred of taste would be a whole lot happier if he did.

i was pretty bummed when sonny left FFTL. he had real potential as a unique vocalist with a nice sense of balance between self-deprecation and seriousness in his lyrics. generally, dubstep makes me want to cut my head off and use it as a bowling ball. it all sounds pretty similar, and it's basically just production tricky using the same effect all the time. i don't get the big deal, but i guess i understand people like to get high and dance to it? whatever. it's not for me. and i'm certain it has nothing to do with age-group.

really, though...what does he do live other than activate samples and tweak some knobs? he's essentially a glorified DJ, and there's nothing wrong with being a DJ...but why is he being hailed for his originality? yeah, those visuals are pretty cool, and the motion capture stuff is really interesting, but he's still just twiddling knobs occasionally, and dancing around.

this is coming from someone who likes COIL, and understands that some things can't properly be re-created live without simply triggering samples...but i just don't get what the big deal is with skrillex...

Pretty sure you should be appreciating whoever's doing the art direction for him, unless he's doing it, and then he should give up DJing and become an art director...
Also, pretty sure T-Rez's production was on an independent budget next to Skrillex's major label budget - and when the music is comparable...

I don't understand your point. What else does a DJ do besides stand on a stage and twiddle knobs? That hasn't changed in 20 years. Skrillex isn't famous because his live show is better than anyone elses. He's famous for a couple of reasons.

1. EDM exploded in the states over the past 3-4 years. I don't know if you or anyone noticed, but halfway through the 2000's Rap died out and EDM slowly crawled it's way into the mainstream. First they started as electro-productions around 120bpm and the past two years every artist on the radar has just been throwing vocals over 128bpm house tracks.

2. When the scene started to really breakthrough into the mainstream, a big genre that helped propel this was Electro and Progressive House. Why? Probably because unlike Techno or House or any other EDM genre, Electro and Progressive house place a large emphasis on Melody over groove/rhythm (there's a lot of progressive that isn't the stupid avicii or swedish shit that got popular) but you catch my drift. If melody is such a big deal why didn't Trance blow up in the states? Probably because it's at 140bpm and americans couldn't relate to it. House tempo is much closer to the tempo of Pop songs that had been around forever.

3. One of the first names to pop up during this explosion was Deadmau5. Why did he blow up? Probably because he pumped out a ridiculous amount of material over a short period of time. Regardless, Deadmau5 was a huge name by the time Skrillex was trying to break into the scene, and a big driving force of his success was Deadmau5 telling all of his fans to LIKE Skrillex. Also, Skrillex was remixing a bunch of big name tracks at that point (Bad Romance etc.)

4. AND HERE'S WHAT I THINK IS THE BIG ONE. Ok, so, mainstream americans, for some reason, have a really hard time listening to music without any vocals in it. They just don't get it, it's too boring i have no fucking idea why. So, why did Skrillex connect with so many stupid people beyond the fact that he produces the already more accesible Electro/Dubstep, because his sound design is crafted around Vowel Sounds. Skrillex productions are relatable to people who wanna sing along because the sound of "Ayayaya" or "Wrrraaaaaaagghhhh" or "Woowwww, wowowowow, WOooooww" is easily singable even though there are no real words in it. So all the bros of America get a huge testosterone boost when there hear some low frequency noise and a big RRRrrrrggaaaahhhh on top of it that they can make with their own mouth.

So when you combine those four things, and take into account the fact that Skrillex productions are mixed and mastered like a god damn pro, and his sound design is very advanced meaning not any douche with a computer can pull it off which means he's actually making some pretty decent stuff, You have my theory for why Skrillex is so successful

He also had a huge fan base from his screamo days with From First To Last and even with his electronica period where he was just "Sonny".

No I don't.

No offense, but that just seems like an absurd theory to me. For one thing, I don't really think they sound like vowels, personally. I live with a couple of Skrillex fans, and I've never heard them describe his music like that. One of my friends tried to explain to me that he loves Skrillex for the same reason he loves Attack Attack, going on about how they both create "ultra-complex rhythms!" and they both have "massive drops!" and "headbanging grooves!" Of course, that's just one person's opinion. But I'm just saying, I've never encountered anyone who claimed to like his music because he makes vowel-sounding noises that are easy to "sing" with. I suppose they do sometimes imitate the sounds of his songs with their mouths, but people do that with all sorts of music (drum breaks, guitar riffs, etc.)

And even if there is someone who thinks that they do sort of resemble vowel sounds, I doubt that Skrillex specifically "crafted" them to sound like that in a conscious attempt to appeal to a more mainstream audience, as in he sat at his computer and thought "I've got it! I'll program vowel sounding synth noises because that'll be more accessible to audiences who don't usually like instrumental music!"

The whole theory just seems completely ludicrous.

Then again, I probably have no right to have any opinion about what his appeal might be, since I think his music is cheesy and embarrassing, and not much better than a nu-metal band. I thought it was a perfect match when he worked with fucking Korn.

Whatever vowel-esq qualities his synth sounds may have, most other dubstep artists have them too. That's just the style that's developed for the genre as a whole. Take that synth bass that sort of sounds like "wubwubwubwub". There's lots of other dubstep artists whose bass has that exact same sound. So that doesn't really account for his commercial success.

/SLOW_CLAP

Well put my friend.....

-------------------------------------------

I don't care if this is called "BROstep" or whatever, I like it. If you don't like his tunes then why the hell are you posting in here? I don't care for a lot of other bands but you don't see me shitting in their threads. Skrillex is making his mark with a sound that is different than other dupstep artists. NERO for example is another great Dubstep/Electro/DnB act but they lack that certain sound that Skrillex has. He's managed to take a style of music that would normally stay underground and bring it to mainstream and for that he deserves the attention he's getting.

Talking bass? Rusko was one of the first people to do that sort of thing and take it really mainstream. I kind of understand whats being said but i'm not sure i'd attribute it to Skrillex's success. Timing more than anything, i'd say. Its a cool technique though, and this will always be my favorite definition of it :

R-Dot-Yung, post an example of a song that you think has "talking bass." I listened to the dude's Scary Monsters EP thing, and I hear him regularly through my walls, and I don't recall hearing any basslines that sound like they're "talking." Post a clip or something.

http://soundcloud.com/knifepartyinc/unison-knife-party-remix

- This one sounds like it's either bit crushing as a modulator through a vocoder, or thye recorded themselves making those vowel sounds and used those as the modulator

http://soundcloud.com/killthenoise/koan-sound-talk-box-kill-the

- Kill the Noise is definitely running a bit crushed wave as the modulator through a vocoder to get the "Eee-Ayy"

http://soundcloud.com/skrillex/first-of-the-year-equinox

- This ones got a bunch of synths that a rapidly increasing or decreasing in pitch to get the "Woop" sound. In between those you have what the internet calls "skrillex growls". Which here sound like a mixture of transposed samples and resampled vocoder bits

http://soundcloud.com/youfeedme/strange-behaviour-feat-tasha

- This track isn't so much a "talking bass", but it's in the same league as those posted above. Really well designed reece sound with lots of movement.

----------

Then you can contrast those sounds with this Rusko song. Which is just a "wubwub" low pass filter modulation.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtMlB-BEMso

In my opinion. The first four tracks I posted are way more interesting to listen to because of that heavy "talking" movement. Ruskos bass sounds are one dimensional and "simple". Anyone with Massive can pump out a Rusko Bass. People pull their hair out trying to get sounds as nice as KTN, Skrillex, Rob Swire, Jon Gooch etc.

Rusko was not using "talking bass". And what Mantra is calling WubWubWub which was always a big factor of BroStep is also not "Talking Bass". WubWub is just Low Pass Filter/Band Pass with High Resonance.

I will stand corrected if you guys show me someone before Skrillex who was using talking basses, but I can't remember hearing anything that sounded like Skrillex before Skrillex.

I mean that Kill The Noies song is clearly influenced by Skrillex as is most BroStep stuff that comes out these days.

Boregor might have been talking with bass lines prior to Skrillex

Sorry about that, I don't really stalk anyone's posts to be honest. I looked at your website and profile looking for links to the blog you mentioned, and couldn't seem to locate it.

I realize you're friends, and that's actually why it pushed my buttons. It goes beyond critique of the music, and gets personal. It's limiting bullshit, and I fucking hate it (the particular behavior, not you personally, you seem like a decent enough person).

What really gets me is the failing attitudes and content of the counterculture/underground crowd. They suck for not being the better alternative that they pretend they are; they're just as shitty as the mainstream and at least 10 times more pious. It's really been grating on my nerves lately, and this just seemed like another prime example of it. Then again, maybe I'm just grumpy because it's that time of year. No offense intended, joymode.

If something isn't very good it doesn't really matter what culture you identify yourself as being a part of, you should feel free to call a spade a spade. If someone were to go on about how great Nickelback is I'd have no problem telling them how wrong they are, why should I treat members of this supposed counterculture (a rather juvenile idea in my opinion anyway), which I'm presumably a member of, any differently?

Skrillex just isn't very good. He's not a terrible musician or anything, it's just his music is trite and frankly I find most of his tracks end up sounding pretty similar.

SKRILLEX SCORES HARMONY KORINE'S SPRING BREAKERS WITH COMPSER CLIFF MARTINEZ

SOUNDTRACK OUT ON BIG BEAT/ATLANTIC RECORDS MARCH 12th

Six-time Grammy award winning DJ/Producer Skrillex has teamed up with Cliff Martinez, acclaimed composer behind the scores of Drive, Contagion, Traffic and more, to score Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers. The electro house driven results of the collaboration will be available as part of the film's official soundtrack, to be released via Big Beat/Atlantic Records digitally on March 12th and physically March 19th. The music, a collection of party anthems that bely a darker underbelly, lends itself seamlessly to Korine's bitingly surrealistic portrayal of the hedonistic and deranged path four bikini-clad college girls (Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine) take to secure their perfect spring break, assisted by a thugged-out amateur rapper played by a cornrowed and grill-wearing James Franco. The film also features rap star Gucci Mane and introduces the ATL Twins. Additionally, the soundtrack includes work from Gucci Mane, Rick Ross, Birdy Nam Nam, Waka Flocka Flame, Meek Mill, Ellie Goulding and more. Spring Breakers hits theaters in New York and Los Angeles on March 15th and nationwide March 22nd.

I understand that you do not like dubstep obviously, but you and thousands of other people say "It's just noise". That is just ridiculous to say music "Is just noise"... last time I checked that is what music is. I can go in my kitchen and bang some spoons against my glass table or bang some pots together and be able to make a tune out of it... There is a difference between well produced dubstep and shitty produced dubstep.
