Lashana Lynch is the new 007 in the next Bond film.
Apparently the story involves James Bond being retired and Lynch as his successor; Bond is then called out of retirement one last time to 'avert a global crisis'.

James Bond is a wank fantasy for the male ego... he's a ludicrously alpha dude.
The idea that they would make Bond female just feels like they're understanding that it would be such an "OHHHHHHHH!!!!" moment, without having the awareness to understand WHY it would be. James Bond is a dude. It's his character. He's a jerk, and a misogynist, and that's who he is.
He is for dudes what harlequin romance is for girls. It's insane and stupid to swap it up.
People online are either having a meltdown, i.e, "PC SJW Nazis!" or are saying "It's about damn time!"
There is a lot of confusion. Lynch is not the new James Bond. She has the 007 codename at the start of the new movie, as Craig's character is retired. As far as anyone knows, she will not take over for Craig.
I just want to assert that just because I think it's stupid pandering bullshit that utterly misses the point, I'm not having a meltdown. I could really give a fuck about the Bond franchise. I'm not into harlequin romance.
So, to be clear, Lynch is playing the new 007, not James Bond. It's too early to say for sure, but maybe they're deciding to change the formula? Take the universe that's been established, keep a continuity going with the other actors, but have a new agent in place as 007 who isn't James Bond. I'm a lifelong Bond fan and I'm intrigued. Take the chance and see what happens. If it doesn't work, reboot and/or go back and watch the other TWENTY SIX Bond movies that exist.
I think the shock is less that the new 007 is going to be a dark complected woman, and more that 007 isn't going to be James Bond. Like, conceptually, 007 is a title, so the tag could have belonged to anyone. But as mentioned, it belonged to one character, James Bond, for 26 movies. I kinda get though that's easier to replace the character completely than to try to change the character that's already established as a womanizer across 3 or 4 decades of films.
A little info on this history of the 00 as it relates to Bond 25:

Yep, and it's really the only logical way forward for the franchise... I've said as much before, in another of the movie threads on this board. They basically have no other choice. As @Jinsai points out, a Colonial-era misogynist alcoholic bulldog IS the James Bond character. That's... just not something global audiences want to see right now. Best use of the material they have: focus on a different character in the universe next. And giving that character the iconic 007 designation could be a great way to pass the mantle onward.

I don't understand the love for James Bond at all. I think I watched one James Bond movie when I was a kid. That was enough for me.
Well it shits all over the theory that ALL the bonds are cannon, they all take the name Bond and 007 and just retire(die) and the new one takes the name.
Honestly for a studio that has been through 2 directors on this movie alone because they didn't like what they were doing, i don't think they have the balls to recast bond as anyone other then a white male, whether it works or not. This just feels like a cheap "OMG" moment to get hype for a film that has been a slight clusterfuck to this point. Also would have been nice to get this surprise during the film, not several months before it's even finished!

Glad Craig didn't miss out on having the word "die" appear in one of his movie's titles.
I think, pretty obviously they aren't replacing Craig with a black woman, it seems like part of this plot has bond going rogue after being replaced or in someway used that as a plot device. Clearly , James bond is not being feminized here.
But it's fun to pretend he is. Certainly in a weird way James Bond is both built of and upholds and perpetuates all of the negative notions of what our culture perceives to be masculine and, miraculously, doesn't do that for any of the positive notions of that. Which is impressive and awful. For all my liberal politics and feminism I can't help but love the movies anyway. Certainly a black woman as James bond is perhaps the furthest push into the identity politics game of "how much does it matter if we change this characters race, gender or sexuality?"
I don't think it matters that much. I'm not really coming to these bond movie to necessarily see "depictions of toxic or traditional masculinity"... Is any body? I'm there for the action and the gadgets and locations.... The ridiculous villain plots. There's an extent to which, in retrospect I like to watch a movie like "You Only Live Twice" in horrified and embarrassed amusement. Contemporary movies aren't made for that kind of amusement, obviously. A lot of the *James bond tropes* translate well to other cultural identities anyway. The martinis, cars, the gun, fucking a lot of people... Do they have to be women? I don't know , I don't think so... I think that James bond brand of sexualization and promiscuity kind of works beyond barriers of gender and sexual orientation... It's pretty fun to think about. Such a switch would be the ultimate piss and moan fest for incels everywhere. But I don't think it changes the substance of the thing at all.
But that's not what's happening
On another note my view of this movie has soured significantly in wake of the whole Spider-Man debacle. It just seems like an early opportunity to punish Sony by just not going.
It's nice to see The Love Boat's font being used again.
I still have yet to watch Spectre. How does it hold up against the rest of Craig's bond films?
Spectre is the only one of the four I don't like. I actually like Quantum of Solace, especially as a companion piece to Casino Royale. I've always thought the villain plot was both somewhat practical and really fucked up.
I always found Quantum the ugly duckling of the series, even though I find myself watching it whenever it is on; really hard to follow up with what Casino Royale was. I'm going to try and catch this sometime tonight.
Saw SPECTRE for the first time since I saw it at the theater. Really enjoyed it--great mix of 21st Century Bond with some old-school elements woven in (train fight, big bad henchman, light humor). I had no issues with the pace, which was one criticism, it was slow at times, like the SPECTRE roundtable scene, but it was full of richness and tension and totally worked. Loved Madeleine Swan too, great chemistry with Craig, and Waltz was probably the best actor to portray Blofeld. Best score since On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
SPECTRE is an underrated movie that has aged rather well, imho.

I'm curious to see what they do with Madeleine Swann. If I had to guess, they are going to kill her off in the opening sequence, which is kind of a shame. I really liked the way SPECTRE ended, where she goes off with Bond. Really well done scene.
