In all seriousness, though, I just couldn't think of a way to parody that line, and the original works well enough (or so I thought) in its new context. Repeating the same lines with an entirely new context is something I like doing with my parodies - though being a lazy songwriter is probably a factor there as well. Anyway, as I see it, the "circumstance" could be accepting his promotion, resorting to plagiarism in the first place, or a combination of both.
In the circumstance is not the same line. In the circumstance is not even proper grammar. 'In THIS circumstance' is correct and what was in the original lyric.

    You're right, I goofed. I told you I was a bad songwriter.
