This album sounds like sex. That drum mix. Ugh. Incredible mix work by DB, Visconti and Tom Elmhirst, plus Joe LaPorta's exceptional mastering – not too hot, not too cold. It's only slammed because there's so much low end that hasn't been neutered to bring up the overall volume; nothing is crushed or washed out, no actual sausages, just big bass waveforms left to groove along.

I do wish "Sue" was still in elongated jazz form à la Nothing Has Changed, but I'm content with the 'priority version' this new (save drummer Mark Guiliana and guitarist Ben Monder) backing band shaped. And they're a hell of a group of musicians. The subtleties on this record are on par with the finest Bowie bands.

This blows The Next Day right off my radar.

Are there lyrics in the CD booklet? (not available here yet last Friday)

Also, the Lazarus video, it's probably obvious to everyone except me, but he had to be at least partly upside down in the bed, right?

@Substance242 the booklet's great, and all the lyrics/credits are printed in glossy black ink against the black pages, with different stills and photos of Bowie throughout.

(2016) is a direct spiritual successor to "Station to Station" (1975). Consider the albums' structure, the exact song times on Side A & the overall emotional arch, etc etc

See Also: "The Man Who Fell to Earth" (1976 film), "Lazarus" (2015 play), Thomas Jerome Newton.

Also, it has probably been pointed out or obvious that he is wearing a Station to Station era outfit in the Lazarus video.
And there is "The Thin White Duke" and "Blackstar" thing.
But other than those, I'm not seeing an other blatant or obvious links.

A little more than half of a great album. "Blackstar", "Lazarus" and the last two songs are fantastic, the others I weren't so taken with but would strain to call them bad.

I was listening to Blackstar yesterday, and while I was listening to it, I was thinking about how when he passed away, people were gonna go crazy and things wouldn't really feel the same in music. And that thought was brought on by how the album kind of felt like a goodbye, in a way. What a beautiful man. He gave us this album while he was battling cancer. If there was any doubt as to whether David loved his fans, let this completely obliterate it and it never be questioned again.

wow, how fucked up is this? I can't believe it. I really thought he was on a peak right now judging by the album itself and of course it's presentation... this is heartbreaking. glad I bought the album already, what a remarkable piece this is.

This really fucking hurts. It really does. He was part of my upbringing. I was 2 when Let's Dance came out as my mother loved that album as her favorite song was "China Girl". I remember those videos when they first came out as it's probably among my earliest memories. By the time I was a teen, I wasn't listening to Bowie until I heard that he was touring with NIN. I was weirded out by Outside at first as I had only heard a few things he did prior to Let's Dance but then I realized that there was so much more to him through compilations and then I got into his studio albums and... I became a fucking fan. Blackstar is a grand final statement and no one will ever replicate anything he did. Thank you David.

So sad. I've seen how awful cancer is first hand in the past year, and for someone to go through that and still make such a vital album like Blackstar, that is pretty amazing. He was and is amazing.

    But yeah, so sad.

Woke up to this news and it doesn't feel real, it's just not right.

All I can think about is the Lazarus video at this moment.

I was eating my breakfast when the notification popped up on my phone off Sky News. Their app didn't actually have the story on it so I had to check on their Twitter before posting here. Shocked, to say the least. I'm not the biggest fan of Bowie, I love the Berlin trilogy and Scary Monsters but am not overly familiar with anything else in his catalog. I was planning to get Blackstar this coming weekend since I'd heard and read good things about it.

To be perfectly honest, I was never a huge fan of Bowie's; I don't own any of his albums, just a few of his classic songs ("Space Oddity", "Fame", "Let's Dance", "Changes", "Under Pressure" with Queen), plus a few others ("Cat People" as featured in Inglorious Basterds, "The Heart's Filthy Lesson" from Se7en, and of course "I'm Afraid of Americans"). But that's not to say I didn't know of his status as a rock god, or of his forays into acting (he was awesome as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige). Until I heard the news just a few minutes ago, I didn't even know he'd been fighting cancer. In any case, I'd certainly call this the first "major" celebrity death of 2016. Another music legend gone. RIP, Bowie.

    God this is the worst.

I'm one of many who grew up with this man in my life. His art touched so many people. Truly one of the greatest artists to ever live. No one compares.

Knowing Blackstar was meant as a final album now really makes it so much harder. Going to have to wait a bit before putting that one on.
