How many people can get in at one time though?
4-6 I believe. NIN still has a strong chance because he's the Hollywood darling and all.

Trent's too busy to be categorized with these folks. Maybe when he retires in 20 years they'll induct him.

Is anyone really all that surprised? Sure, it totally sucks but I wouldn't say this wasn't expected.

^^^^^^^This. Ah well, not like it means that much, and there's zero doubt he will be inducted in time.

I'm okay with it if on the basis they only did it because they don't want two 90's acts in at the same time, and focusing more on performers from previous decades and generations.

You may not like them but Green Day have been very influential in their genre. I think anyone owns a copy of Dookie.
I personally learned to play to guitar because of Green Day. Anyways, just my two cents ..

I'm actually pretty surprised. Given his popularity at this moment, along with his continued influence... It would have been rad to see him inducted in Cleveland. But meh. I think it's really cool that he got nominated the first year that he was eligible.

Green Day were huge when I was growing up. And the only two songs I can remember of theirs off the top of my head were after they were "big", I think.

I'm pretty affirmed by this decision, none of the rock acts I enjoy were inducted. Excepting Lou Reed, winners still suck

I like Green Day (to a point) but was kind of surprised that they made it the first year that they were eligible; although I will say that it's hard to understate just how popular they were in the fall of 1994--it was like Beatle-mania.

Maybe not literally everyone, especially in the NIN community as Dookie was kinda of the polar opposite of TDS.
However, it did receive a diamond certification in 1999 and ultimately sold over 20M worldwide as of 2013.
You simply cannot deny the fact that Green Day marked a generation of kids in the 90s.

I would bet that a majority of people who bought Dookie back in 1994 also owned TDS. Modern rock radio at the time played both bands on a regular basis, side-by-side, along with Nirvana, PJ, Soundgarden, AIC, Pumpkins, STP, etc. It was pretty awesome, actually.

So if Nirvana were the originators of pop punk, does that mean every generation of pop punk bands gets in up to Good Charlotte / Fall Out Boy because they're popular, why not just induct One Direction then if popularity is the issue?

Because Green Day wrote some good songs?

My husband still fake-erroneously calls him "Billy Witherspoon."

Face it, the suits at the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame use this for their selection process:
