That six album sprint from SGR to ULTRA is simply incredible, with ULTRA being my favorite record they've ever done. That record was for me in the mid-90s what Black Celebration was for many in the mid-80s. There's a sound...an element of darkness...to those six albums that unifies them, in a sense. It's present in all six records, even if they're all different from one another.
I look at SGR, BC and MFTM as this sort of holy trinity of 80s synth-pop. And then they made an entirely new trilogy -- even more heralded -- with their next three albums.
The only record they've done since SGR that isn't amazing to me is Exciter. There's nothing wrong with it and there are some terrific songs on that one; it just feels...muted, compared to everything else that orbits it in their catalogue.
