As for Depeche Mode 2016 - I do not see that happening, too soon... Delta Machine is great, in my opinion the best since SOFAD. Who would you want to see as a producer this time? What about "produced by Alan Wilder"? OK, sorry, I can dream... :-) But I am slightly worried about some information about them wanting Eigner and Gordeno in studio. For me it seems they still do not understand the group that they are playing with live, Eigner drumming like it is Metallica or something, and Gordeno playing some stupid ornaments everywhere... DM, I love you, try something new again.

(And, pssst, do not tell anyone, but since we are on NIN forum, I still dream about some Reznor/DM project... but maybe Martin and Dave and Trent would kill each other in studio, with Fletch making live documentary.) :-)

Really hoping we get a new album announcement this year, at least a "Hey, we're heading back into the studio, see you guys in 2017 with a new album and tour." I still am kicking myself for not catching them on the Delta Machine tour; they're so high on the list of favorites for me and rival NIN at times, and I'd be beyond disappointed if I never get to see them at least once.

From a very reliable source on the Home forum:

    a) i'm not sure if there has been a formal "next album meeting" yet, considering the Soulsavers era has just ended and now we've had the Christmas holidays.

    But who knows...
It has been scheduled. West coast, USA. I don't know the date, but I'd expect it to be within the next 6 weeks or so.

    30 years today.

Looking back, this is probably THE album which changed my life the most.

Many said that album is the start of the classic period of albums from the band for the next several years from this to Ultra.

i know i've said this before but all the slow songs on Some Great Reward and Black Celebration really kill the flow of those albums for me. if they were dark and heavy with a sense of movement throughout (something to do, lie to me, fly on the windscreen, stripped, etc.) they'd be perfect. i feel like if i stripped (see what i did there?) each album of its slow songs and combined the remaining tracks, i'd have a perfect depeche mode album.

as it is (and i know i've said this a lot before) i think Construction Time Again has that feeling for me. it has an underlying sense of foreboding despite the generally upbeat/catchy nature of the tunes, there's no real slow/sappy moments on it, and it's the only depeche mode album i can listen to all the way through without wanting to skip anything besides Violator.

That six album sprint from SGR to ULTRA is simply incredible, with ULTRA being my favorite record they've ever done. That record was for me in the mid-90s what Black Celebration was for many in the mid-80s. There's a sound...an element of darkness...to those six albums that unifies them, in a sense. It's present in all six records, even if they're all different from one another.

I look at SGR, BC and MFTM as this sort of holy trinity of 80s synth-pop. And then they made an entirely new trilogy -- even more heralded -- with their next three albums.

The only record they've done since SGR that isn't amazing to me is Exciter. There's nothing wrong with it and there are some terrific songs on that one; it just feels...muted, compared to everything else that orbits it in their catalogue.
Exciter's my favorite record, come at me bro.

I love Exciter too. Not sure if it's my favorite though.

Ones I'm very high on are:

    Violator
    Ultra
    Exciter
    SOFAS

The last three are pretty great as well.

Regarding Black Celebration, and internet... there is only one weak song on this third best DM album, "Dressed in black". Uninspired and sounds like a victim of the loudness wars before they even happened. But it is a good way to dumb down to sleep the listener before the final good track, "New dress". And still, some people actually love this "Dressed in black" song. How come...? And some love "Ghost", similarly uninspired monotous track. And some do not get "Get right with me", perfect dynamic track. Internet is full of wrong opinions, see? ;-)

Speaking of that, the correct order of DM quality is:
    1. Songs of Faith and Devotion
    2. Violator
    3. Black Celebration
    4. Delta Machine
    5. Music for the Masses
    6. Some Great Reward
    7. Ultra
    8. Playing the Angel
    9. Construction Time Again
    10. Sounds of the Universe
    11. Exciter
    12. A Broken Frame
    13. Speak and Spell

And that is a fact, because I said so, not something to be discussed. ;-)

I'd actually rate PTA and DM about equal actually.

Lilian should have been the lead single with an awesome video, imo.

sadly, yes. i loved it growing up but it's aged poorly for me. the singles are great, but overplayed. it's mostly the production on this record that kills me.

A couple of years ago I made an alternate version of Black Celebration for my iPod. I wanted to give the album a darker feel so I replaced some tracks. Generally this sort of thing could be looked upon as 'blasphemy' but I think it's an improvement on the original album.

    1. Christmas Island (5:40) extended – from A Question of Lust
    2. Black Celebration (4:59)
    3. Fly on the Windscreen (7:49) extended – from It’s Called a Heart
    4. It’s Called a Heart (3:49) – from It’s Called a Heart
    5. Shake the Disease (4:49) – from Shake the Disease
    6. A Question of Time (4:13)
    7. New Dress (3:44)
    8. It Doesn't Matter Two (2:52)
    9. Dressed in Black (2:34)
    10. Stripped (6:42) highland mix – from Stripped
    11. But Not Tonight (5:14) extended – from Stripped

I may have done some slight editing so that the tracks flowed nicely but I don't remember.

I don't get into ranking lists really... but people are so hip that they're placing Violator under Exciter and Ultra?

Oh man... Sorry, that's just objectively wrong (not really, y'know, but mostly)

Violator is one of those untouchable albums. It's ridiculous how loaded it is. I'd say that in the DM catalogue, SoFaD, Black Celebration, Music for the Masses... those come close, but Ultra? Maybe I need to listen to it again.

That just seems insane to me. That's like saying the best Pink Floyd album is "Delicate Sound of Thunder"

Not gonna post the full ranking, but I'd place everything else under Ultra. There you go.
And Delicate Sound of Thunder is a live album. Maybe you meant A Momentary Lapse of Reason? (Still million times better than The Final Turd Cut)

I did mean Momentary Lapse, thank you. But really, Ultra above Violator and Music for the Masses?! I just don't get it! It seems crazy.

And, then again, I'd put Final Cut way above Momentary Lapse... but I'm not trying to derail things.

The Love Thieves, The Bottom Line, Insight and Freestate are really amazingballs though.

With the odd exception, I generally feel that the weakest album tracks are definitely the ones that Martin does lead vocals for.

Amazingly, I was able to recreate this in Spotify with no problem if anyone is interested:
