i would go directly backwards chronologically and listen to Faith, as i think it's the closest in their discography to sounding anywhere near as dark as Pornography does (they're my two favorite cure albums)

They’re one of those bands where the b-sides are just as good as (or sometimes better than, see: This Twilight Garden, Play, This Morning, Ocean, etc.) the album tracks. Get the Join The Dots 4-disc set for a pretty comprehensive b-side compilation.

Pornograpghy might be my favorite by them. It's so dark, and cold and abrasive at times. I'd probably go to Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me next . It does have lighter moments on it like Just like heaven. Or I'd go back further in the catalog and listen to Seventeen seconds or Faith.

This is good advice. One weird thing about the Cure is, aside from the b-sides collection which is a really good spread of their styles over time, and generally really really strong too (with some exceptions: the Doors covers), none of the "best-of" style collections do a good job of getting across what they are doing on their albums. E.g. despite collecting 3 songs from Disintegration, you get nothing of the atmosphere of Disintegration on "Greatest Hits". "Standing on a beach" is a bit better (IMHO singles collections are generally better than "best-of" collections anyway because it shows you what the group did no matter what the contemporary take on that might be) but only covers the first half or so of their career. (But at least doesn't skip over Faith and Pornography entirely, like "greatest hits")

    So grab "Join The Dots"

Fun fact nobody cares about: My intro to the cure was more-or-less "Join The Dots", before it was released: In about 2001 I tried to steal anything Cure I could from "AudioGalaxy" in order to learn more about them (the Napster of that time, briefly). But AudioGalaxy let labels/artists blacklist certain songs/albums/etc, so all the main run of Cure stuff was not available, which left only the b-sides. So my introduction was Ocean, Dredd Song, Halo, Fear of Ghosts, 2 Late, Burn, Adonais, etc., basically the "Join the Dots" tracklist.

after seeing Burn live in person, it's become one of my all time favorite Cure tracks. makes me wonder what would have happened if they recorded a whole album in 94, and not 95/96...

It’s kind of like the equivalent to The Perfect Drug. Soundtrack only song, and occurred in a “What could have been” album period. Why do these obscure periods always seem to yield such amazing songs? And it’s always that. Just a song.

I think it being only one song is why, you end up having only one great piece of music and nothing else to judge that period by. It's a lot easier to imagine everything else would have been as good.

weirdly enough, the track is ONLY robert and boris williams, who left the band pretty much right after recording it.

i have one but i turned it from a six string bass into a baritone because when i put a bigsby bridge on it, the bass VI strings were too thick to fit around it haha

I'm not being the slightest bit facetious when I say that if I had a Fender VI and was able to get that authentic old school Cure sound out of my amp, I would probably never leave my house.

literally the first thing i did when i got it (and it was still a six-string bass) was do a fucking terrible cover of "cars" by gary numan...no idea why.

Strange radio silence on that. Tim Pope tweeted something about being "sworn to secrecy" which makes me think yes.

I remember that on the tickets page when I looked up my location, it said something to the effect of "sign up to be notified when this film is released" but I don't know if they meant theater release or home release.

Just One Kiss is my favourite Cure song, so always happy to see that pop up since they brought it back in 2012.

Wendy Time is the first time it’s been played since 1992 - hopefully indicative of the “Wish” deluxe edition coming out soon?

Is there a fan club, NIN presale style route to getting tickets for The Cure? I couldn’t get any last time they played the UK so I want to get in there before they announce more shows

yeah with 5 Wish songs on the set (quite unusual these days) , including Wendy Time? I hope to think that the deluxe version is being worked on, and maybe revisiting it remastering it made them want to play the songs. or maybe they'll do Wish in full soon, like they did with Disintegration .
