Damnit @eversonpoe , you do too know what breakbeat music is, don't you?
"Breakbeat" (2), characterized, simply put, as a genre of around 140bpm with a kick drum on 1st and 3rd beats, and a snare on the 2nd and 4th beats in a 4/4 beat pattern. This varies the music greatly from the steady beat used in house, techno and trance etc., which while often sharing a snare on the 2nd and 4th beats, are characterized by a kick drum on every beat (from wikipedia) .

If you really don't know what breakbeat is, think most of the music of Crystal Method, The Prodigy (aside from their pure techno stuff a la experience,) a lot of Baby Anne, a lot of Kosheen...also the dj sets of Simply Jeff, Aquasky, Bassbin Twins, Icey, etc.
I would call Genesis. Oblivion and Flesh Without blood breakbeat tracks, for instance. MOST of her stuff is breakbeat.
Even her name is taken from pluralization of a breakbeat sub genre.
All of my favorite Grimes tracks fit neatly into the breakbeat genre, and the few tracks i DONT like happen when she ventures outside its tasty, groovy confines.

Just to be clear, I HATE endless "genrefication" of music. It drives me nuts when some geek tells me that he only listens to "progressive vocal psy-trance...but only the techy kind" or some ultra specific insanity. And i know it sounds ridiculously shallow to say that you don't like a genre of music because of where the kick drum falls. But that's just the way my ears work.
Also, human nature urges us to classify, classify, classify, and the only way we can describe music is with words.
I happen to LOVE drum and bass, jungle, breakbeat, dubstep and hiphop, while trance annoys me and i pretty much flat out can't STAND house music. I can't STAND 95% of what they are calling EDM these days (the 5% i like being the rare dubstep artist.)

I'm actually enjoying this album more as I listen to it. The context of the approaching Aussie summer definitely has a lot to do with that.

This album is so wonderful. Claire actually reached a whole new level with this release. I feel like she's not going to be relatively unknown for much longer. I can't get enough of the new version of REALiTi, and Butterfly is simply beautiful.

Correct. Santa, reindeer, white christmas.... all that stuff makes very little sense down here.

i'm sorry, how does a SHIRT have any thing to do with anything? who gives a shit if she likes ICP. i liked them when i was in junior high because it was funny/stupid music. she's allowed to like whatever she likes, whether or not it has any influence on her.

why are people so hung up on EVERY SINGLE THING she does? she's a human being who is allowed to have complex feelings and like whatever she wants to like. get over yourself.

Seriously, how does a fucking t-shirt detract from her music in any way shape or form? Who gives a fuck? Other than seemingly bitter, lonely, teenagers.

Bahahaha. I'll be sure to let her know, I imagine she'll be devastated to hear this from someone with such command of what is edgy.

Well so far I've heard flesh without blood and kill v. maim and I'm loving them. I heard the singles from Visions but nothing grabbed me particularly (listening back I like em, I'd only heard them passively via radio and hadn't seen all the visual stuff to go along). Might put this new album on my Christmas list.

Because, she has to know how absurd those guys are. She's not a naive high schooler, she's doing it to either be cheeky or fuck i don't even know anymore. It's like when she decides to spin mariah carey's all i want for christmas during a dj sets. she's lacking substance, but maybe that's what she wants to do? become a full fledged pop start with nothing else to offer.

You didn't answer the question AT ALL.

Does it ever occur to you that maybe she likes ICP and Mariah Carey Christmas Songs and that it's none of your fucking business what she likes to listen to and doesn't?

So let's try this once again, how does her wearing an ICP shirt detract from her music in any way shape or form?

In that case, I think I should probably let you know that's been the general reaction here to just about every single one of your posts in this thread.

@Rabbit i think you're cool and all , but YOU remind me of a high schooler talking shit about what your ex girlfriend is up to!

And yeah, like @richardp said ... i would IMAGINE that she has an ICP shirt because she LIKES ICP.

Also, just saying, when people let ME choose the music, i tend to play tracks that i LIKE.
So if i liked Mariah Carey and had it with me, i would probably play it if i was the selector.

John Peel (RIP) would play whatever the fuck he wanted too, god rest his soul. I believe this is covered in the bible:

Grimes saw all that She had made, and it was very good. Evening came and then morning: the sixth day.

    And zero fucks were giveth.

To try and steer this thread towards a more positive vibe: I've put both Art Angels and Visions on my christmas list, but I couldn't decide whether to dip for Vinyl or not.

I don't listen to Grimes all the time, but I thought there were interesting moments on the albums I listened to. I liked her live sets that I've seen. I think she's cool.

I can't get the anger about her, and I'm interested to hear the Skinny Puppy collaboration, because the music might be good and I'm not psychic.

Such a beautiful little album, Art Angels. Fell instantly in love with it. Kept smiling the whole time. It definitely warrants repeated listening, as there are all sorts of little details that I keep finding out every time.

Prior to that, I had only listened to her debut album, I think. It was the one where she did those incredibly high-pitched vocals on the final track, right? Holy shit. I felt like an angel pierced right through me.

I totally get (and love) what she's doing with the ICP shirt. I wouldn't be surprised if she also sported Juggalo facepaint at some point to hammer the point home, but then the joke would have worn thin.

There's nothing to "get". It's not funny, it's not relevant, it's lame. She's thrown almost every single reference imaginable up into the air, what's the point? This is like Metallica doing an album with Lou Reed. Stupid.

I've never been so thoroughly disappointed with an artist before. This is new for me.

What I love about her last two releases is it gives you two completely different sides of the spectrum. If I am in a good mood, and wanna bounce to some feel good pop, I'll throw on Art Angels. If I'm in a gritty mood, I'll throw on Visions. I love when an artists music is accessible in many different ways and it keeps dragging you in for more. I feel she could have ended Art Angels a bit better instead of using such a bubbly song to finish it off. Kill V. Maim, World Princess Pt.2, and Venus Fly are usually on repeat most of the time. "Scream" is so odd and I love it, but I feel it is so out of place on this album and the placement of the track itself. It's weird with Art Angels... a lot of the sounds, melodies, and beats I feel like I've heard in other songs that are on Art Angels. Sometimes I'm convinced that they really are just specific parts of songs just mixed really well together, but that's obviously not the case.
