I flew out to New Orleans to catch the last show of the further down the spiral tour (2-18-95), and saw Coolio walking through the airport. There was a hip-hop show of some sort going on that he was performing at.
I also caught the Night of Nothing showcase at the Muddy Waters bar (2-17-95).

This is ultra local, but legendary African born, Philly trained doctor, who first worked in Australia, but ultimately chose to devote his life to the TX panhandle, Ositadinma O. Opara, passed away a few days ago.
He was a DO and an MD, and an internist.
He spent his (far too short) career serving rural Australians, and then, rural Texans in the panhandle.
Damn, y'all. He was fucking one in ten million.
He took care of my mom through her big heart attack and spent a LOT of time with me. He later became my PCP, and acted as such for years.
He CARED about people, for real. He worked to provide affordable care to people in rural areas on two continents.
I know he's not a celeb, but he changed the lives of thousands of Texans and Australians.

I've been in this argument on another forum but if you quit listening to everyone who's done something sketchy you wouldn't have a lot left. Even artists we all love here did some stuff they ended up not being proud of, like Bowie with seriously underage girls & statements about fascism. He changed. He's far from the only one. Being judgemental is dangerous because you never know what's going to come back on you. Not commenting on anyone's beliefs but the bible said let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Some wisdom in that verse. Art vs artist is a very thin ledge to walk on.

Those poems were almost certainly written in memory of his wife, who happened to be HIS 13 year old, FIRST cousin.

The Killer (aka JLL) was an INSANELY influential performer, and seminal pioneer of rock, who often finds himself on "greatest artists of all time" lists.
Hell, he was a Sun Records guy, ffs, just like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, etc
He's also endlessly fascinating, in that he was VERY religious, but also, considered the music he played, and his drunken lifestyle, to be of the devil, so he was constantly conflicted.
I highly recommend his biography, Great Balls of Fire: The True Story of Jerry Lee Lewis. And it certainly isn't damage control: Myra, his 13 year old bride of 13 years, co wrote the thing.
RIP to a rock legend.

Poe swore he “did not assume the role of husband,” slept in another room, was likely courting other women while married to her, and all of the history and letters indicate that he married her to rescue her. Then she died of T.B. at 2 years later.
Having grown up with the history of Jerry Lee Lewis (his biggest hit was 4 years before I was born), the marriage thing was literally career suicide. Boom, dead. His “marriage” signaled the end. But JLL was a sociopath.
