Depressive episodes are ridiculously painful and sadly an inescapable part of the illness he suffered from; in this case, apparently it was terminal. I wish the best for his family in this dark time. So many people loved him and he touched so many of us with his work. It's a tremendous loss. I saw him working in person once, around the time this photo was taken (not at E3 but on the set of Death to Smoochy). Incredible guy, everything you'd hope for and more.

There has been a massive security breach with iCloud.
Dozens of celebrities have been hacked and nude photos Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Ariana Grande are spreading like wildfires.
Videos have also been obtained by the hacker but not yet leaked.
Apple has not issued a statement yet.

Lawrence's publicist has confirmed the authenticity of the pictures.

I heard about and it's a good thing I downloaded those pics. The Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton pics are great yet I was more surprised by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Brie Larson. Wow.... And I heard there is more to come.

You know, I have sympathy and I don't. The Hacker(s) unlawfully invaded privacy and obtained these files and it isn't right. HOWEVER, you took the nude photos (often unwarranted) so you run a risk of others seeing them in some shape or form. You did what you did, you have to accept that they might get in others' hands.

The fact that TMZ called the cops on this person should tell you something.

I'm more curious how it happened. Too many things don't add up for it to be "an iCloud hack" the way every site is covering this. Lots of nonApple phones used, people claiming they deleted these pics years ago, etc.

I'm thinking this wasn't a one time event. It's a collection from many hacks over the years. I'm curious if someone was fucking with wifi or bluetooth hijacking at the oscars or something.

Yes and no, what i mean is I'm not trying to justify anything.. this is disgusting and basically rape-lite but i think there's something a little different where the biggest mistake if I'm understanding the incident correctly from these people was not quite the creation of the photos for personal and consensual use that's nothing that should warrant any blame or excuse but the posting of the photos on the internet, i think that's where you'd have more common sense......you're promised all the security in the world but you should still know better that there unfortunately is no privacy on the Internet.... ever. Tenfold when you're a celebrity.

It's like choosing to knowingly walk outside naked and expect that nobody is going to see you, that is a completely unrealistic expectation.

I'm sure all it would take is a techie that works at DropBox or iCloud, really any of these broadband networks to cross a line.. How do people seriously put so much trust in to this stuff?

The moment you put ANY personal information in front of a corporation, hell even if it's a damn bank.., your credit cards, i don't care what it is.... you completely run that risk of opening yourself to intruders and that risk is huge. I wish people were more wise with the things they divulge.

I wish it were another NSA leak. This kind of leak would finally prompt some real changes. I know it's almost certainly not but, I can hope, right?

I absolutely agree that this is not a legit excuse but still. These are celebrities and they know they have a constant target on their back.
If you want to film yourself getting a cumshot on your face, do it with a Gopro and put it on a local drive or something.
Do not film this shit with your iPhone and do not store this on iCould.
You know this could permanently damage your career so why even take the risk.

I truly feel sad for Lawrence and others. She legitimately looks like a sweet girl and it's unfortunate that her private life has been exposed that way.

I wouldn't put it past them. We know what they're capable of, all it takes is some perversion.

Not to cook up some kind of conspiracy theory or anything though....

4chan eats their own again. It's kind of amazing that someone can be this careless when doing something like this. I'm guessing this was the guy who leaked it all but wasn't the one who actually stole everything.

I called Apple, and the Apple tech dude asked me some security questions that I probably answered about 10 years ago. I failed to answer 2 of the 3 EXACTLY (what was the first album I bought, what was the first concert I attended, what was my first car) so then he asked me my credit card number. I actually had that correct. He still would not let me into my account, I had to wait 72 full hours to access my own account (I only got this because I had the credit card number, otherwise I wouldn't get in at all), and he would not change the password to my account. Which means, if I had been hacked somebody else had access to my account and I could not stop them. So he says "well, did you get an email warning?" I said, dude, I can't access my email. He didn't understand this. I immediately went into every account I had that used that iCloud email address, changed it to another Gmail account that has, like, 3 levels of security, I set up a random password generator and changed my passwords on everything, etc. When I finally got access to my iCloud account, it looked fine, and I still don't know what happened (the 2nd Apple tech dude I called suggested that maybe GMAIL caused it, wtf, eye roll). But, knowing Apple's "72 hour lockdown policy" the iCloud hack seems like maybe there was something else going on in addition to this. They're saying a Python script for Find My iPhone but it seems to be worse. They're finding DELETED photos?

I think @DigitalChaos hit it on the head re bluetooth hijacking from a really long time ago, and they've been sitting on this shit for a while.

Not sure if I posted it here last night, but apple has allowed unlimited password attempts against their accounts. Once you know the email address, getting in is fairly easy. I think only a portion of the dump was iCloud sourced though.

    Apple just fixed this today

Now, the Apple guys I talked to said they locked down my account after a certain number of attempts, that's why it was locked down. They said it could have been that one of my email apps on one of my devices had a bad password and that can cause it, or it can be an attempted hack, but either way it causes lockdown. This is the message you see.

edit: oh, okay, this wasn't iCloud, it was Find My iPhone: http://thenextweb.com/apple/2014/09/...-being-leaked/

Yes, that's the biggest fucking problem with Apple ... *everything* is tied to AppleID; iTunes, iCloud, email, FindMyiPhone, the whole fucking 9 yards. Hence why I moved everything out of AppleID; that "what was your first album?" security level is stupid. I did read articles about not answering anything honestly, though, so I never give honest answers to anything anymore, and never give my birthday. The problem is remembering which date I gave them LOL. Which increased my AppleID security problem (they don't have my real birthday). But this "Brute Force" script thing is a different story.

Get yourself a password manager. I never "forget" my password and I can document any of those stupid security questions if I ever need to remember them. I like 1Password.

The only thing that sucks is when you don't have 1pass and need to log into something (rare). It won't protect you from this level if security failure by companies though.

Yeah, my new phone came with an account for "Keeper" so I've been using that. And I use the same stupid answer for the security questions. I'm not too happy with Keeper, though, because it charges you once for backup but then keeps trying to charge you on all your devices to back up and I keep telling it to fuck off. edit: okay, I went and changed the security questions and saved them in Keeper. Not that it would've helped from this level of shit. Bad bad Apple back door bullshit.

This isn't proof, but I'm willing to say this is very likely what happened here. Everyone is used to there being a single event with "leaks" but this one really doesn't seem that way.

for money? Money didn't really come into it until it all started to fall apart (if this story is true). It's a bunch of people who were all trading stolen shit with each other. As for the big mystery of WHO would do something like this... uh... have you ever been around an adolescent male? Before the internet, there was the common "boys will be boys" line concerning how desperate they were to see some skin. Be it stealing porn or hiding somewhere private to catch a peek. Now, we have the internet and people really don't understand some basic security. It makes getting your hands on private data much easier and the risk of getting caught during the act much harder.

I'm in no way excusing this shit, but I just don't see it as OMG SO SHOCKING.

I'd love for Apple to take quite a hit on this and for it to prompt companies to elevate their security practices. I'd love for individuals to advance their understanding of security a bit... even if it is just "don't put anything on internet attached devices that you aren't ok making public"

The fact that money even came into this at all is hilarious bullshit, that's why it's "shocking" to me.

My initial post here hasn't changed my opinions, facepalms given and all, about having sympathy and not having sympathy for the ones effected. However, the fact idiots are going to these levels and extremes is just so out there and laughably pathetic for what they do in their real lives that this online "makes up for it" or some shit. I'm sure this gives purpose or enjoyment to some but they're just photos and nothing fantastic to covet and swap like fucking trading cards. ("I'll trade you a folder of my Mary Elizabeth Winstead for your files of Vanessa Hudgens!")

Ah, well the money thing was likely the death throws of this "ring." When we have TMZ's in this world, money will always come into situations like this. I'm actually surprised it took this long. That actually really speaks toward the true motivation (perving the fuck out). It would be unlikely for money to come into it before then unless you were a rich kid without any skills... they usually get laughed at and attacked though.

As for people who waste their time, the desire to get into shit you shouldn't be in is a part of bored youth. I've watched kids deface government websites in the late 1990's just because. Another common thing was porn/warez trading bots on IRC that operated very similar to this proposed circle (you first contribute, then you get credits to take some data). Some people also never grow out of it. The guy who got 10 years for doing this to Scarlett Johansen was fucking 35!

I don't know. Maybe I've just been too close to this kind of crap all these years. I know how common it is and it's why I am more careful with my stuff. I feel really bad for the people who don't know any better and learn the lesson the hard way.
