^^ hilarious
I flew out to New Orleans to catch the last show of the further down the spiral tour (2-18-95), and saw Coolio walking through the airport. There was a hip-hop show of some sort going on that he was performing at.
I also caught the Night of Nothing showcase at the Muddy Waters bar (2-17-95).
This is ultra local, but legendary African born, Philly trained doctor, who first worked in Australia, but ultimately chose to devote his life to the TX panhandle, Ositadinma O. Opara, passed away a few days ago.
He was a DO and an MD, and an internist.
He spent his (far too short) career serving rural Australians, and then, rural Texans in the panhandle.
Damn, y'all. He was fucking one in ten million.
He took care of my mom through her big heart attack and spent a LOT of time with me. He later became my PCP, and acted as such for years.
He CARED about people, for real. He worked to provide affordable care to people in rural areas on two continents.
I know he's not a celeb, but he changed the lives of thousands of Texans and Australians.
RIP Mrs Lansbury. You'll be sorely missed.
@elevenism : I'm very sorry for your loss.
aw man, that one caught me off guard.
ah this one sucks... Mike Schank, the dude from the documentary American Movie has died.

10 Farther Along Ft. Morgane & Chris Stapleton
This is awful, Leslie Jordan was a national treasure.
RIP Jerry Lee Lewis (for real this time). 1 of the greats & pretty much the last one standing from that generation.

His Instagram posts during the start of the pandemic lockdown really made things SO much better. He was so hilarious.

good riddance
I've been in this argument on another forum but if you quit listening to everyone who's done something sketchy you wouldn't have a lot left. Even artists we all love here did some stuff they ended up not being proud of, like Bowie with seriously underage girls & statements about fascism. He changed. He's far from the only one. Being judgemental is dangerous because you never know what's going to come back on you. Not commenting on anyone's beliefs but the bible said let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Some wisdom in that verse. Art vs artist is a very thin ledge to walk on.
Amen.
I love Edgar Allen Poe, for instance.
You guys like Annabel Lee and The Raven, at least, right?
Those poems were almost certainly written in memory of his wife, who happened to be HIS 13 year old, FIRST cousin.
People do crazy shit.
The Killer (aka JLL) was an INSANELY influential performer, and seminal pioneer of rock, who often finds himself on "greatest artists of all time" lists.
Hell, he was a Sun Records guy, ffs, just like Elvis, Johnny Cash, Howlin' Wolf, Carl Perkins, etc
He's also endlessly fascinating, in that he was VERY religious, but also, considered the music he played, and his drunken lifestyle, to be of the devil, so he was constantly conflicted.
I highly recommend his biography, Great Balls of Fire: The True Story of Jerry Lee Lewis. And it certainly isn't damage control: Myra, his 13 year old bride of 13 years, co wrote the thing.
RIP to a rock legend.

Poe swore he “did not assume the role of husband,” slept in another room, was likely courting other women while married to her, and all of the history and letters indicate that he married her to rescue her. Then she died of T.B. at 2 years later.
Having grown up with the history of Jerry Lee Lewis (his biggest hit was 4 years before I was born), the marriage thing was literally career suicide. Boom, dead. His “marriage” signaled the end. But JLL was a sociopath.

“High School Confidential” dropped off the charts. His career imploded; he was never a commercial threat on the pop charts again. Meanwhile, Presley duly went to Germany for his military service. Little Richard, who had sexual demons Jerry Lee couldn’t conceive of, had taken himself out of the pop game. The next year, a plane carrying Buddy Holly would crash on tour in Iowa. A few months later, Chuck Berry would be arrested on Mann Act charges and ultimately sent to prison. Rock and roll suddenly seemed as if it could be the passing fad its detractors always said it would be.

Jerry Lee was the last man standing. That era is over, at last.
Yeesh the words ‘constantly conflicted’ doing some heavy ass lifting up there lol.
Poe just "rescued" his cousin. Sure. Maybe.
On the OTHER hand, that whole whole Osgood/Poe/Ellet/Clemm quadrangle was a trip.
EAP's indiscretions purportedly hurt Virginia, DEEPLY.
But, it's much easier to absolve 170 year old iniquities committed by beloved artists, on the basis of a few letters, and hindsight.
I don't think we'll ever know.
Yes. Jerry Lee Lewis was insane, and likely a sociopath. Didn't Elvis call the cops on him, once?
Again, I recommend the Murray Silver/Myra Lewis biography.
That particular scandal DID ruin JLL's career, no doubt.
But I'm hangin' tough with @chuckrh on this one.
The dude was a rock pioneer.
So was Ike Turner. Yes, he (ike) did a bunch of horrible shit, but one of his tunes is in the running for First Rock Song.
Idk. I just like music and literature and art and such.
Unless we're talking Lostprophets type shit, well, i don't care much what artists do with their spare time.
.Therefore, i don't generally follow every detail of the lives of every artist i enjoy. Again, if it's REAL fucked up, i might back up with the fandom...like i did with Manson in the late nineties.
Dr. Seuss was a piece of shit. So was Mother Teresa, and Gandhi.
John Lennon LOVED beating the shit out of women.
I'm reasonably comfortable appreciating the Killer's tunes.
