Got a question, what's a good record player brand these days as far as quality?
So, pardon the ignorance, but what's the difference between an amp and a pre-amp? How does the receiver fit into all of this? Even just a link that outlines all of this would be great.
I'm just using a basic receiver and a pre-amp for my turntable, but I'm always open to trying different things over time, money permitting of course.
A preamp is what it says: something you attach prior to amplifier, it allows mixing of sources and usually some levelling, and it prepares the signal for the amplifier. The amplifier amplifies the sound, and allows it to be run into speakers etc, and will usually have multiple in/outs.
If you have a receiver, you have no need for a preamp btw, as the preamp and amp combined ARE a receiver. And, just to be confusing, in casual parlance a receiver will sometimes be called an amp.
So:
Source > preamp > amp > output
or
Source > receiver > output
And when I advised an arcam amp, I totally meant an arcam receiver and that's more a language barrier than me intending to be confusing!
I find "Receiver" quite confusing, I think it's a name for an Amp in the post home-cinema era, but I could be wrong.
The signal out of a turntable is too low for an amp to make sense of, you need either a pre-amp to boost it up to "line level", which the amp can handle, or an amp with a built-in pre-amp. It an amp clearly indicates it can take a phono-input it means it has a pre-amp built in.
@jmtd I believe Brits made the sensible decision to make amp mean both amp and receiver, we do love confusing ourselves after all
Not trying to be a jerk by any means here (pay no attention to my title with regards to this post, haha) but can we keep the gear talk contained in this thread? I really want to try and get that thread to take off so we can get more information collected in one spot.Hey @Leviathant , can you clean up this page when you get a chance?
It's worth about $15 according to the ones that are on Discogs. I'd just hold on to it since its a cool novelty item![]()

Fair enough, I just want to do whatever I can to help keep that gear thread alive![]()
Hey, gimme a few hundred and I'll buy some lovely new gear and talk about it :P
On topic, Discogs hit 5 million submissions today, and the fact it's still the best home for so much vinyl cataloguing makes me happy
Anyone else finding discogs to be a double edged sword? I've noticed that record shops are now using it to price their LPs and it makes it harder to find those rare gems at a decent price![]()
Pfft, learn to haggle :P
To be honest, it's not a big issue to me, but then I tend to buy a lot of music that's in the lower price bracket - I'd rather 10 albums I don't know for £15 than one album for £50, discovery is part of what I love about record diving. As much as I want, say, Coraline OST on LP, I can't really justify buying that when I can get over 20 records for the same price from my usual haunts. Same reason I don't have With Teeth on vinyl yet, I really can't bring myself to spend that much when there's so much to discover.
I hate hagglingI guess I need to get on board with it though. I passed on a gold promo stamped original banned cover of Appetite For Destruction because they wanted $60 for it. I'm a sucker for gold promo stamps but not at that price range
I've got some gold stamped records somewhere, a record's a record to me so I just get the best condition I can at the lowest price, can't be doing with all this collectible cover stuff when there's music - I have a first pressing of Bitches Brew without a sleeve, and it sounds just as good as it would with a signed one :P
When I buy gold promo stuff, I buy cheap. All of the gold promo stamped LPs ive posted in here are $15 or less (with the exception of a few, like Ministry's "The Mind" album)
Does anyone know someone selling (for a good price) Milla Jovovich's first album, The Divine Comedy, on LP?
Very excited to say that I know own the entire Dark Knight Trilogy on vinyl. Loving this orange variant on Batman Begins.
Oh man those are awesome.
Just pre-ordered the Sargent House re-issue of The Grime and the Glow on Black/Grey Smoke vinyl!!
This thing has been long out of print, so I was happy to see SH doing a reissue of this and Apocalypsis, although I do already have the first pressing of that.
I still need to pick up Pain is Beauty on vinyl... but that can wait.
Finally got a recording rig set up. First test, cranes 7"s.
Took up on @NotoriousTIMP 's tip and picked up Sons of Magdalene at Amoeba in Hollywood. When I went to Amoeba in SF, they had no idea who I was talking about. In San Francisco, I buckled down and got the Superunknown reissue and a Duran Duran RSD EP: No Ordinary EP. In Hollywood, I got Sons of Magdalene: Move to Pain and The Body: To Carry the Seeds of Death Within Me.
newest arrivals:
Thrice - Vheissu 2x150g clear, limited to 300, with artwork like the original vinyl release (link)
PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love, new reissue (don't know all the details but it's my first full-length PJ vinyl so i'm SUPER HAPPY)
still waiting on my sons of magdalene album to come in the mail...not too happy about it.
