The Really Super Cool Electronica Thread

I have been on a huge electronica binge for the last.. uh, well, all of 2012, and like Anthony Bordain, I'm hungry for more!

    Typically on my playlists lately:
    • Aphex Twin and all the side projects. Massive, massive amounts of RDJ.
    • Culprate - Colours - Holy crap this is an amazing album!
    • Amon Tobin - If you're in this thread you probably know his stuff. Crazy creative sounds always draw me in
    • Ben Frost - Some of the creepiest shit ever
    • Skrillex - Yeah, yeah, he's the ACDC of electronic music, and lots of bros listen to him, but his stuff is still fun to listen to.. on a limited basis
    • Orbital - Wonky - Despite a few rather embarrassing tracks, I'm really digging the new Orbital record
    • Plaid - Scintilli - Digging the new Plaid as well
    • Deadmau5 - various albums - Fantastic "doing something" music -dancing, painting, driving, homework, exercise, etc
    • Underworld - almost everything by this classic band gets play from me, but my favorite is dubnobasswithmyheadman, and Oblivion With Bells
    • NASA Voyager Recordings - This isn't electronic music, it's the actual sounds of the planets and their moons as recorded by the Voyager 1 space probe, and it's the most amazing, rich, and evolving ambient music ever

I'm interested in anything good in whatever genre, drum n bass, trance, ambient, whatever. I'm not quite as interested in vocals in the tracks, but if it's good it will hardly stop me. Some of those Deadmau5 tracks with vocals are some of my favorites, for example.

    Let the synth wars begin!

I feel highly comfortable with Black Strobes burn your own church. Haven't listened to their other stuff, but I like it alot for its diverse sound. That and a friend introduced me to a group called Old Apparatus. Pretty soundscape-y and they remind me of Telefon Tel-Aviv but I enjoy them alot.

Also Keith Hillebrandt. I still have to dive deeper into his records, but I like what I'm hearing (transporte).

I love nearly all Electronic music. Dont really know where the hell to begin!

My favourite areas of Electronic Music is really the areas revolving around House Music and the Jungle, Drum n Bass, UK Garage scene.

But also love, Acid House anything out of Detroit, Warp records, Ambient House, early Dubstep.

Underworld are probably my favourite electronic 'act' of all time.

What i dont like is some of the awful Euro trance, and some of the recent commercial U.S Dubstep shit. Also some Minimal Techno can be painfully dull and cold sometimes.

100% agreed. At their prime they're leaps and bounds ahead of the crowd.

Orbital, Autechre and Richard D James are on the same tier.

As for more recent breakthroughs, I enjoy Burial and Flying Lotus' stuff quite a bit.

Gotta give the Chemical Brothers a mention. Loved them since I was a kid.

Anyone wanna recommend me some ambient stuff? Looking for more structured stuff, love Tim Hecker, Eno, etc. but looking for more of a lounge-jazz meets ambient mixture.

Throwing out a big recommendation for Cylob, who has a vaguely similar sound to RDJ's stuff under the AFX moniker.

Cylob is awesome. Check out his album Spider Report. Awesome stuff

And I second the love for Autechre. LP5, Confield, EP7, Quaristice, Oversteps, Amber, and Tri Repetae are all incredible.

Hell, yeah! I was listening to a series of pulsar recordings the other night.

In the vein of Alva Noto and the Raster-Noton line, Byetone

    and Komet

Lone ft. Machinedrum - As a child. Saw machinedrum live and he brought the house down. Going to see Shackleton early next month.

I will say... The Fight Club soundtrack is one of the most underrated albums. What does "chemical burn" sound like? hmm protostep

if they promoted it with a sticker on the front saying "the blokes what did paul's boutique", I think it would be up there with Vangelis' blade runner ost and goblin's dawn of the dead

Love this track. Apart from this and a remix EP I can't find anything else from the artist.

    System 7 are crazy good.

Love Lone's sound very nostalgic and warm.....

This is probably one of the most beautiful gorgeous pieces of electronica i have heard so far this year.

Cant stop listening to these beauties.

Also re-listening to a lot of Photek stuff at the moment he did quite a lot of remixes....he remixed and vastly improved this slightly cheezy track by Zero 7

Listen to this whole thing at least once a week. One of my favorite albums.

    Also great:

And one of my favorite deep house tracks

    Finally, my album of 2011

    I agree...
Fight Club soundtrack is awesome! Wish the Dust Brothers would do more soundtracks.

Oh, and for good electronic music... check out the Wipeout video game soundtracks
I know they officially released one for Wipeout XL and Wipeout Pure
but yeah, always a great selection of tracks, especially the XL one

I've posted a couple other times about this album, but since I dig it and think it deserves a mention in this thread too...

    Mr Bill - Focus
    niftyness
the album is on spotify, but I'd encourage people to buy it and support some cool independent music.

Lately I've been all about Laurel Halo - Quarantine

You can stream the album here : http://www.factmag.com/2012/05/16/st...-for-hyperdub/
Excellent, if divisive stuff. Very different from her earlier releases.

I wish I got what people like so much about Byetone. I've tried several times.
I refuse to believe that "it's just not my thing." I can appreciate music that I personally don't like. With Byetone I just don't get what the intense appeal is. Even with The Field, where I'm generally just bored, I get what people like.

Can someone please help explain what they like about this music?

Claro Intelecto's good, and dark, and dreamy. There's not really a lane for this type of music these days, but fans of John Roberts and other artists who mix ambient music with deep house will find a lot to like. Here's a Depeche Mode remix.

Also, if you've not checked out VCMG, there's probably something wrong with you.

Lots of stuff to go through in here, this is great! I'll try to post about things I find particularly interesting as I work my way through it.
