I got into Joan Wasser first through her work with Antony and the Johnsons. It wasn't until last year, with her excellent LP Damned Devotion, that I really took a deep dive into her songwriting and those hypnotic vocal stylings got under my skin. With the release of a retrospective called Joanthology and an upcoming tour, it just seems like an appropriate time to get the word out on ETS!
As an aside, I had no idea until very recently that she was involved romantically with Jeff Buckley at his untimely death, and recorded an album in tribute to him with Those Bastard Souls. In fact, her career goes back to long before that with The Dambuilders. A big catalogue, certainly, and one full of hidden gems.
Here is another amusing video... Joan sits down with Paul from SuperDeluxeEdition and 'unboxes' (shows off, really) the packaging for her most recent release, Joanthology:
cool, will have to check out more of here stuff. discovered her with the Damned Devotion album, had a few of the singles from that one on my fave tracks playlist for 2018. good stuff.
Yahoo! First three records being reissued on limited colour vinyl. These will look great next to my baby-blue Live at the BBC and translucent-pink Damned Devotion vinyl.
You'd think that because the new record is called Live that it'd be recorded on tour, but nope. It's a studio recording... of the live band playing the songs just the way they did on the last tour. Funky, loose, and kickass fun.
