New Shadow is pretty good. Really like the things he tried by implementing more electronic components to his style. Feels refreshing. A song like Ashes to Oceans is reminiscent of Endtroducing.....
Other songs like Depth Charge and Bergschrund go on full attack mode and are absolute killers.
I would agree that the few rap songs on this one are pretty good as well.

I'm gonna have to give this a few me spins but this has the potential to be Shadow's best since Endtroducing.....

After a few albums of more experimental music, the new Tricky single 'The Only Way' is giving me a very Maxinquaye vibe...and I fucking dig it.

“A few years ago I’d have said I ain’t doing this because it sounds like me,” Tricky says of the song, which was recorded in Moscow late last year. “I always had a punk rock attitude: I don’t give a fuck if you like Maxinquaye, I ain’t doing another Maxinquaye. Now I’m a bit more comfortable giving people what they want sometimes.”

hell yes, i just caught that about five minutes ago.

I love it. It's probably my favorite tricky song of the past 10 years or so.

Like his last few albums, i listen to them, i respect them, but i usually don't wind up playing them more than once or twice.

Whereas, with this song, I've already listened to it 3 times in a row.

Holy shit. Tricky announces new album "ununiform" which can be preordered from his official site www.trickysite.com and drops on Setpember 22.

Second single "When We Die" features Martina Topley-Bird!!!! Fuuuuuuuuuuu this sounds like a straight up throwback to his Maxinquaye shit...

A newly discovered lifestyle of freedom, peace, and ease has led to Tricky returning to a familiar style. As he explains in a press release, “I’ve got nothing to prove now, and I’m comfortable with referencing myself.”
The album features a number of collaborators, including Russian rappers Scriptonite, Vasily Vakulenko (Basta), and Smokey Mo. There are also features by Francesca Belmonte, Asia Argento, Mina Rose, and Avalon Lurks, the latter of whom joins in on a cover of Hole’s 1994 classic “Doll Parts”.
A great example of all these facets — the return to form and abundant guest appearances — is Tricky’s new single “When We Die”. The track features Martina Topley-Bird, who first worked with Tricky on 1995’s Maxinquaye. It’s the first collaboration between the pair, who have a child together, in nearly 15 years. The track itself is a sparse and creeping song that examines the beauty of life through the lens of death.

Ununiform, while not a complete throwback to his earlier works, is still easily the best of his last 3-4 albums...it's that good.

this is amazing, I remember being a 11 year old boy in 1997 and seeing the video for All Mine on MTV it scared the shit out of me. really heavy powerful album. probably the best album of 1997, sounds better every year.

I've seen him a bunch of times too, and it's always a fun night. Got to have a drink with him after his last show here in Vancouver, and he was pretty down to earth, albeit fairly stoned out of his tree. FWIW there's a presale code that's the same for every date: BVYOURERETRO and two tickets for the show here after fees ran me about $85. CDN though bear in mind...

    edit: Also....new stripped down remix!

I met him in 97 when i was 17 and told him he was "a big influence on my poetry writing" etc.

And he said "thanks. Gottalight?" And he had me light his king size joint, and i think he knew exactly how much that shit would mean to me.

At that show he went around and smoked grass with the audience for a LONG time before going onstage. I've always thought that was pretty fucking cool of him.

The second time i conversed with him, i was covering the show for the college newspaper in 99 and trying to interview him, but the interview was interrupted when the photographer who was with me tried to snap pictures.
And he growled "NAO PICTCHAS! NAOW! NAOW!"
i don't quite no how to verbalize the way he talks, but you know what i mean.
The photographer was a black girl and i was like "What man, you seriously aren't gonna make an exception for this beautiful black princess?"

    But he wasn't impressed. :P

So give details about having a drink!

Was his last show here way back in 2010 (has it been that long?). Played at a club downtown called Venue, and after the last song where he did Ace of Spades and pulls a ton of people up on stage (including my wife and I), the show ended and we were among the last few to jump back down. He came up and invited us and a few ppl we were with to come hang out backstage, so we grabbed our two friends and went back. He came back after talking to a few others in the crowd, and after the place cleared out, the 8-9 of us or so just hung out and talked, had drinks. He was pretty damn high so only had a Heineken or two in the hour, but was very polite and seemingly interested in anything we talked about.

I dug up a pic from my FB:

Funnily enough I went back even earlier to his 2009 show here, where we got a pic with him and he looks even higher. Talkin' like bloodshot eyes level lol.

I managed to get tickets, this morning, for my first Tricky concert. It's in a very small venue, The Mezzanine, in S.F. I've been looking forward to seeing him perform live for years!

Bit the bullet and got a ticket to the Denver show. It's been too damn long since the KS show got cancelled, and I refuse to miss another chance to see him play in one of my favorite places in the world the same week of my birthday, May 5. Happy birthday to ME.

If I could feel my BONES rattled by "Past Mistake?" Ugh. Sign me UP.

I like all their albums but HEAD FIRST. The band even admitted to not really caring for it much. Top albums for me are the first two :Felt Mountain" & "Black Cherry" then it would probably be Seventh Tree & the most recent tied for me. Tales of us is good if you enjoy Felt Mountain, but it isn't as "weird"

@october_midnight , @ImTheWiseJanitor , and the rest of you Tricky fans:

Are you aware of, and/or, have you read, Tricky's new memoir "Hell is Round the Corner?"

I highly recommend it. After actual decades, with deep dive interviews practically nonexistent, it's a TRIP for him to open up like this. And open up he does- he explains a LOT. ALSo, it's very much in his "voice."

I'd recommend it to any Tricky fan. It highly exceeded my expectations.

his memoir ends on an INSANELY high note, and he's SO fucking happy with life, until the final page, which is the ONLY page that discusses the loss.

@october_midnight @ImTheWiseJanitor , did you track down a copy of the book?
