That is a great topic!

I usually hate remixes. Most of the time, it's just a weird non stop beat that has nothing to do with the actual song. The whole Radiohead TKOLRMX1234567[8] is a great exemple (it's not all shit, but it's not that great either).

Reanimation had some great rework/remix. Almost half of the song came out somewhat better than the original (except In The End). I still believe it's the best remix album ever put out. I liked the Depeche Mode "reinterpretation" of Enjoy The Silence.

The Great Destroyer (modwheelmood) is awesome! Right Where It Belong v2 too.

Inspired by the "songs you like better on the album" thread in the Nine Inch Nails section, I thought it would be interesting to ask what songs do you enjoy better in an alternate form, be it a demo that lacks polish but "sounds" better, a remixed version by another artist, or an alternate recording that might change the whole mood of a song. (I'm not including covers by other artists or live versions. Strictly studio recordings or bootlegs.)

I prefer the remix of White Zombie's "Blood, Milk and Sky" over the original.

I prefer Liar to Reptile, because the vocals pack so much more punch. I end up missing some of the production elements of the final version though (particularly the 'insect' pan crecendo around halfway through), so my version splices a few Reptile elements into it.
I also prefer Reptilian, due to added funkiness and less monotony.

Purest Feeling Sanctified over all other versions.

Wretched (Version) over the original (just) due to more variety and subtlety.

Starfuckers' Dave Ogilvie remix over original.


Outside NIN, the main band that springs to mind is Evanescence, because I think their earliest material (prior to Fallen and widespread success) is by far their best. Almost everything on Fallen has a more soulful and less nu-metally antecedent on Evanescence EP, Sound Asleep, Origin or the Demo CD.
Also, Prodigy has a tendency for their songs to be improved over time, either by other artists or themselves. With their greatest hits, they took the opportunity to fiddle with some of the tracks, to great effect (Spitfire's a really good example of that, as is Poison).

James - Ring The Bells (Alternative NRG Live recording). The original is happy and Cure-esque, this version was recorded for a Greenpeace-sponsored CD anthology where all the songs were powered by energy generated via alternative means, or something.

Anyway this MUCH more downbeat version was famously used in S03E03 of the X-files, "D.P.O." (also featuring Jack Black and Giovanni Ribisi) in an opening scene (if I recall correctly).

Like many I spent AGES trying to track this song down and actually met a really good friend on the quest.

part remix / part cover, the "grittier" texture of the remix really works wonders, and it's probably the best thing KMFDM has done recently...

Danny really did something special with this. It makes the original sound so dull and boring.


Also, his remixes of Denial Waits and Sword by Ashes Divide are awesome. Apparently he remixed the whole record, just wish all the other mixes would surface.

In fact, pretty much every remix Danny does ends up sounding better than the album version. The Undertaker remix for Puscifer, The Outsider (Apocalypse Mix) for APC, Where Is Everybody? (Version), it goes on and on...

I became a GUI BORATTO fan specifically because of his brilliant remix work.

I think it was that introduced me to him. I love his signature bass grooves and twangy guitar over electronics, which you can hear on too.

CHROMEO and WHITE SEA also deserve serious recognition for their remix work since they both are generally more interested making their "remixes" into new songs altogether (i.e. added lead vocals, etc.)

- absolutely batshit synth solo on this one.

- I love the original, but Morgan Kibby's added vox and low end seal the deal.


and are 2 of the best remix artists out there as well. Rex has a consistent sound that I find appealing whilst Trentemøller can veer from extremely clubby to percussion-less & piano driven, and do both very well.
