I watched this Apu character study that explores the argument over his depiction as being racist toward Indians, i have to say i think it makes some pretty good observations for why he isn't or shouldn't be viewed as such. That being said i haven't seen the documentary "The Problem About Apu" yet and i still can't say for sure one way or another because I am not Indian and have not experienced being misrepresented, teased, mocked or bullied because of a cartoon character.

It's the same controversy of the "Brazil Episode", of course they are mocking and exaggerating, but there's also a degree of truth, that's why they are stereotypes, i'm Mexican and i'm so used to them and i laugh at this point.

well, unless you believe nazi conspiracy theories about aryans being from the himalayas, I am not of Asian descent & to be honest my opinion on whether it is offensive is of arguable value.
But anyway here it is
The Simpsons came from after the shit on everyone below us era of comedy, and as such all social strata were lampooned fairly equally.
Were every white family portrayed as without excess, I would find the depiction of Apu inordinately critical & therefore distasteful
