Thanks for the heads up! I opted to download it "officially" using my academic creds. It's not often my academic life and NIN fandom cross streams, but I guess today is one of those days.

Edit: "Because the record label was uninterested in promoting such
potentially harmful and non-lucrative materials, Reznor bootlegged and
sold the VHS tapes himself at live concerts."

    citation needed!

Is this in reference to the Broken movie or live recordings or what?

Yeah, I read it yesterday after @camebackhaunted was kind enough to post a new link. I figured it was in reference to the Broken movie, but if that's true, then what about Trent's answer to a question on nin.com/access from 2014 where he stated
"...I gave a couple of copies to people I knew, each specifically labeled with dropouts at various times so I could identify whose copy might possibly surface. Thank you, Gibby!" Did he just give up once it leaked and start selling bootlegs himself then?

No, I think the author is just confused about how they were distributed. Trent didn't have any rights to the film (Interscope owns that), so he couldn't have sold it himself. That's why the only two times he distributed it (VHS copies to friends, and seed0 piratebay download) were both done on the DL.

All the bootlegging was done by fans themselves, or by some commercial bootleggers. Any copies sold at shows would have been commercial bootleggers, the same folks who bring you those fine t-shirts.

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought. So, the author is mistaken on that particular detail. Still a good read, regardless!
