    Fediverse and decentralized/federated social networks.

My knowledge of this topic is very limited, like cryptocurrencies it takes a bit to wrap my head around it but I'm curious to know if anyone understands and uses one of these fediverse sites.

A popular one is Mastodon, i have an account with mastodon.social but i hardly use it.

Not really, honestly ? Thing is I see a "lot" (between "some" and "more than a few") people talking about closing their Twitter accounts and/or migrating to Mastodon. First, I don't know if those people are or will actually go through with that. And regarding Mastodon, seems to me that people are joining thinking they'll find the new Twitterspace there. They won't, obviously, because this isn't the same thing, and as minor as the differences may be, people will still have to get accustomed to them and create a new space there.

My experience in those sort of things is that it just doesn't work that way. All of the internet experience is a social one, diverse variations of it. Forums, then blogs, social spaces or feeds, news, vids and pics sharing... For the people to settle on a platform, it either has to provide something new and intriguing, or provide a pre-established social space (topics, existing social circles or easy ways to reconnect with everyone). I think people are struggling with this concerning Mastodon ; It isn't novel, yet it isn't familiar enough, and there isn't enough of your usual circle to reconnect and rebuild it on this platform. And as much as some people are pretty vocal about leaving Twitter, I assume most people don't care about the drama for now. It didn't destroy Facebook yet, I can't why Twitter would crumble if there's no alternative.

People don't leave unless there's something fun to do somewhere else. And even then they don't leave like that, they just slowly give up and desert whatever isn't worth their time anymore. When people left Tumblr they didn't go to the new Tumblr-like site, they just dispersed. Same for the forums, they weren't so much replaced as displaced, people who spent their days together vanished ; some kept contact by other means but the communities didn't exist anymore.

Google+ didn't kill Facebook, because Facebook was still there ; Google+ was just more of the same. I think it will be the same with Mastodon.

This (ets) and reddit are the only social media I bother with. I have a Facebook account but I only use it to buy vintage Rockford Fosgate gear.

Been on the Fediverse for years but it’s been basically tumbleweed until the last couple of weeks, now shit’s got interesting! I’ve been instance-hopping but I think I’m settling at @jmtd @pleroma.Debian.social

    @jmtd found you!

I'm now at thelastdisciple at mstdn.ca if anyone wants to look me up.

Getting a bit more used to how things are working but still some snags that I'm trying to figure out whether it's a server thing or a protocol thing.

    Found you too

I’m in the same place but I’ve got a “forwarder” set up to make me easier to find (maybe?) -

Just found this great primer by Jeff Jarvis that i thought those curious about what Mastodon is or how it functions might want to check out.

I've been set up awhile and while it's pretty quite for art stuff it is pretty active for general chatter now, given everything that's happening with twitter this morning!

Have you thought about looking into Pixelfed? Could be more fruitful for an art scene, i mean it's more photography focused i think as it's like Instagram, there could be other kinds of photo media there though.

An example of an account on there (not mine).

It's on the fediverse so anyone on a Mastodon server can still follow and interact.

Just like Mastodon there are servers you can choose from, the main one pixelfed.social is probably the safest bet for keeping it simple but each one has their own set of moderation rules for the content you can post.

All info about pixelfed.social is here including privacy policy and community guidelines

Even if it's not for you or you don't really want to set another thing up i figured I'd post this info for others also.
