Also funny because both songs are in common 4/4 time, just with weird syncopated riffs.
It's definitely a challenging and disorienting track, I had to listen to cues in the percussion to really latch on to what was going on when it first came out.

I thought it was pretty neat that Dave basically remembered how the song went some 16 years later.

without watching the video i would have assumed he was talking about the collector, since that's in 13/8, right?

That's why you gotta watch the video But to write it down for the day when all our media has disappeared except for text: Dave was confused on where the start of the measure was for a song. He vocalizes it while gesticulating on the drumming, and it's pretty clearly With Teeth that he's mimicking.

Nine Inch Nails spent much of 2005 opening for David Bowie.
    Missed it by that much.

Yeah I saw that and had to laugh a little. I appreciated the overall idea of the article though even if they screwed up that detail.

Half way into "no son of mine" Dave brings up his time in the studio recording drums for Trent.
He doesn't name drop the song, but he does the beat/melody and you can totally tell it's [With_Teeth]

I know I'm a few days late to this, but I feel SO vindicated that the actual drummer of the song (even if he didn't write the drum part) also heard the downbeat "wrong". I only realized the actual downbeat upon hearing the live version, and to this day can't make myself hear it "right".

There are so many other examples I have of hearing the "wrong" downbeat -- almost exclusively in NIN songs -- but I should probably just make a thread about it since I'm curious about others.

(SICNH, part of Eraser, Survivalism, At the Heart of It All, the verses in BYIT, Home, Banged and Blown Through, etc.)

Just for the record, Jerome ended up playing this on the album instead of Dave.

True. I'm getting lost every time in the ending, after it comes out from the ambient part. Live version with the count is a little easier.

Amen to this one. The shift from verse to chorus and back makes me go berserk sometimes.

I would like to also nominate La Mer and Heresy (intro) as the songs where I always hear 1's wrong before the drums come in.

There are a couple more examples that slip my mind right now

I'm still not sure where the 1 is on Big Man With A Gun.
Also the NIN remix of Perfect Drug does something weird with the beat placement in the measure.

Took me a long time to find the downbeat on ‘I Do Not Want This‘. These weird drum beats were always a big part of what I found so intriguing about TDS. I still have issues counting ‘Big Man With A Gun’.

I'm not at home to check my vinyl but I thought that drums credit for the With Teeth song are for Dave Grohl...right? If I remember correctly Jerome Dillon is not there.

Yes, and Jerome also did "additional drum programming" too.

A bit of a touching story from Gary Numan on the invite to share the stage in '09. So happy I got to see a few tracks with him at Echoplex.

Had read it in his book but doesn't beat him telling the story. Happily, was at the show...crowd went mental to be fair!

Seems weird to ask the question of how the pair got into film scoring without really touching on the fact that Ross already had scored films independently prior to the Social Network.

Or even Ghosts I-IV, for that matter. Ghosts was basically their version of a "demo reel," showcasing what they were capable of in the realm of scoring. It was even temped in for scenes in The Social Network before they came on board.

I also forgot to post this yesterday, but TDS was one of the albums showcased on (local Minneapolis radio station) 93X’s “40 Albums that Made 93X.”
