Song lyrics that will always tear your heart out/make you wistful

What song (or songs) will always trigger you emotionally and for what reason? As in, as soon as you saw this thread title, which lyrics immediately came to mind?

To me, it's always the songs about wishing for life hereafter and songs about longing, and/or living a life you didn't lead. Four key songs do that for me, all by The Cure -- listed in the order to which they affect me: Where The Birds Always Sing, Spilt Milk, Out Of This World, The Loudest Sound, all with similar themes as mentioned above.

The lyrics that cut me deepest and will always resonate are these. Play these at my funeral and everyone will probably drop dead from depression! @allegate @allegro , interested to see what yours are.

Where The Birds Always Sing (I just had this on now and heard these lyrics, which prompted me to start the thread. The bits in italics I find particularly impactful):

But the world is neither just nor unjust
It's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it
No, the world is neither just nor unjust
    And though going young
    So much undone
    Is a tragedy for everyone

It doesn't speak a plan or any secret thing
No unseen sign or untold truth in anything...
But living on in others, in memories and dreams
    Is not enough
    You want everything
Another world where the sun always shines
    And the birds always sing

    >

    Spilt Milk

    I don't think I ever know
That I ever really need it
Could be why I'm never sure
That I ever really feel it
And I think it's maybe easier
To guess I really mean it...
A house! A car! A family and friends!
Yeah all it means to justify the ends
    But sometimes... I wonder...
A girl! A smile! A holiday and sex!
    Yeah all it takes
To make sense of the rest

    But sometimes... I wonder...
In the back of my mind
    Sometimes... I wonder...
If I'm killing all my time
    Sometimes... I wonder...
If I'm giving up my real life...

    What I could've done
    Where I could've been
    When I should've gone
    Why I should've seen
    Who I would've loved
    How I would've dreamed
And if it's always, always too late...

    >

    Out Of This World

And we always have to go, I realize
We always have to say goodbye
Always have to go back to real lives
But real lives are the reason why
We want to live another life
We want to feel another time
    Another time

    >

    The Loudest Sound

    Side by side in silence
    His thoughts echo round
He looks up at the sky
She looks down at the ground
    Stares down at the ground

    Side by side in silence
    They wish for different worlds
She dreams him as a boy
And he loves her as a girl
    Loves her as a girl

And side by side in silence
    Without a single word
    It's the loudest sound
    It's the loudest sound
It's the loudest sound I ever heard.

It's not a song per se, but that final quote from Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner, paired with Vangelis' score, always tears me up, because it's just so fucking true for every one of us: everything we experience, take to heart, cry about, laugh about, discover, think about, read about, achieve, learn, see, feel or sense will be lost in the fucking sea of time.

That always gets me too. So perfectly executed.

Have you heard the Gary Numan song inspired by that scene?

    And I have seen wonders
    And I have seen miracles
Oh, I have seen some things
It's all lost to me now
    Like tears in the rain

    And I have seen sadness
And I have seen time run out
    I've even seen men cry
It's all lost to me now
    Like tears in the rain

    And my memories
    I can't give them away
    So it's easy
    Like a long, long sleep
    I'm so tired
Now it's my time to die

    Welcome home
    Welcome home

    No exhibition
    No screaming war songs
    No conversation
    No more opinions here

And I have seen new wars
    And I have seen things
    That you wouldn't believe
And I have seen my days
It's all lost to me now
    Like tears in the rain

The Bed Song by Amanda Palmer

Exhibit A: We are friends in a sleeping bag
Splitting the heat we have one filthy pillow to share
And your lips are in my hair

Someone upstairs has a rap that we laugh at
And people are drinking and singing the scarborough fair
    On a ukelele dare

Exhibit B: Well we found an apartment
It's not much to look at
    A futon on the floor
    Dirty desktop for a door
All the decors made of milk crates and duct tape
And if we have sex they can hear us through the floor
But we don't do that anymore

And I lay there wondering what is the matter
Is this a matter of worse or of better
You took the blanket so I took the bed sheet
And I would have held if you'd only let me

Exhibit C: Look how quaint and how quiet and private
Our pay checks have bought us a condo in town
    It's the nicest flat around
You picked a mattress and had it delivered
And I walked upstairs and the sight of it made my heart pound
And I wrapped my arms around me

And I lay there wondering what is the matter
Is this a matter of worse or of better
You walked right past me and straightened the covers
And I would still love you if you wanted a lover

And you said: "All the money in the world
Won't buy a bed so big and wide
To guarantee that you won't accidentally touch me in the night
Then I said: "You must be right"

Exhibit D: Now we are both mostly paralyzed
Don't know how long we've been lying here in fear
    Too afraid to even feel
I find my glasses and you turn the light out
Roll off on your side like you've rolled away for years
    Holding back those king-sized tears

And I still don't ask you what is the matter
Is it a matter of worse or of better
You take the heart-failure I'll take the cancer
I've long since stopped wondering why you don't answer

Exhibit E: You can certainly see
How fulfilling a life from the cost and size of stone
    Of our final resting home
We got some nice ones right under a cherry tree
You and me lying the only way we know
Side by side and still and cold

And I finally ask you what was the matter
Was this a matter of worse or of better
You stretch your arms out and finally face me
    And said

I would have told you if you'd only asked me
    you'd only asked me
    you'd only asked me

The brightest of lights when I close my eyes
The lowest of highs I feel inside
One day I'll show you I'm broken
My love, for you is unspoken

    Hoping we can start again
    Praying you escape this pain
    Hoping we can start again
Go be the man that I wish I'd been

If only we could swim to the edge of the world
I'll let the tide take me if it means you can be
If only we believe through the depths and the deep
I'll let the tide take me if it means you can be

The darkest of times in the back of my mind
Give me the strength to forget, to rewind
Today I tell you I'm broken
My love, these words I have spoken

    Hoping we can start again
    Praying you escape this pain
    Hoping we can start again
Go be the man that I should have been

If only we could swim to the edge of the world
I'll let the tide take me if it means you can be
If only we believe through the depths and the deep
I'll let the tide take me if it means you can be

Go on, go on, I know it's not enough
Go on, go on, just know it's out of love, you should just
Go on, go on, I know it's not enough
Go on, go on, just know it's out of love, you should just
Go on, go on, I know it's not enough
Go on, go on, just know it's out of love, you should just
Go on, go on, I know it's not enough
Go on, go on, just know it's out of love, you should just
    Go on

If only we could swim to the edge of the world
I'll let the tide take me if it means you can be
If only we believe through the depths and the deep
I'll let the tide take me if it means you can be

    Particularly
"When you tell me you loved me, I wanted so bad to believe you..."

but the whole song is absolutely killer.

The song and lyrics that make me cry every time:

"Vincent" by Don McClean, which is about Vincent Van Gogh

Starry starry night, paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer’s day with eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills, sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills, in colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand what you tried to say to me
How you suffered for you sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how, perhaps they’ll listen now

Starry starry night, flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze reflect in Vincent’s eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue, morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain are soothed beneath the artist’s loving hand

    Chorus:
For they could not love you, but still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight, on that starry starry night
You took your life as lovers often do,
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you

Starry, starry night, portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls with eyes that watch the world and can’t forget.
Like the stranger that you’ve met, the ragged man in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose, lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me
How you suffered for you sanity How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they’re not listening still
    Perhaps they never will.

True love will find you in the end
You'll find out just who was your friend
Don't be sad, I know you will
    But don't give up until

True love will find you in the end
This is a promise with a catch
Only if you're looking can it find you
'Cause true love is searching too

But how can it recognize you
If you don't step out into the light, the light
Don't be sad I know you will
    Don't give up until
True love will find you in the end

    Drunk in the morning sun
I could be talking to you dear or anyone
    This is my hiding place
    I'd found a focus
You were a light on the shadow of a darkened path
Its an empty world now you are gone
Tell me what it's all about

    Shed tears for God's rejected
Cut the cord, rewind the ending
Take my life back to the start
Pick up the pieces of my heart
    Let it be over

    Smoke another cigarette
Draw into the cavern of my failing
    Lungs with heightened senses
    Scattered ashes
All that's left of a lifetime that we had planned
I am here and you are not
Tell me what it's all about

    Cruel Gods of intervention
Cut the cord, rewind the ending
Take my life back to the start
Pick up the pieces of my heart
    Let it be over

    Scattered ashes
Someday we might find a way back to each other
    But for now
Tell me what it's all about

    Shed tears for God's rejected
Cut the cord, rewind the ending
Take my life back to the start
Pick up the pieces of my heart
    Let it be over
    Let it be over
