Good to see Prince in the top 10. Other than that they fucked up as usual.
I'm offended roughly once every 5 albums, so that'd be 100 essays no one wants to read.
Just like no one should give a fuck what Rolling Stones think their top 500 albums are.
But just one gripe. Just one.
Taylor Swift's Red is better than The Downward Spiral? How shrewd of them.

I mostly agree with the top 10.

I don't dislike almost any of these albums (including the pop ones) but I do think that some of these just haven't withstood the test of time enough to be ranked as high as they are. Kanye's "MBDTF" and Beyonce's "Lemonade" good examples of a great albums, definitely deserving the top 500, but that high? Same with the inclusion of Swift's "Red" and "1989". They are excellent pop albums that not only signaled a significant shift in Taylor's sound, but also massively influenced everything that came after them in the charts. Their influence is kind of jaw dropping honestly, they deserve the recognition but they shouldn't be that high.

There are also a handful of albums that are fine, but didn't offer anything new or interesting when they were released, and weren't insane smashes but seem to always end up on lists like these anyway due to years of hype. "Exile in Guyville" is a good example of one that. Same with that John Mayer album, I've never actually met anyone who is a John Mayer fan and I've never heard him do anything interesting or challenging at all. But "Continuum" gets jerked off to religiously on these things.

Also, I think in general metal is sort of under-represented on lists like this. Same with country honestly, I can basically predict which country albums they will throw in without reading it; it will always be the three country albums that had massive pop crossover success (Shania, Garth, Dixie Chicks), five country albums that everyone likes because they are "classics" (Cash, Parton, Nelson etc) and maybe two alt country albums.

Also: given the habit of tastemakers to pee themselves over indie and americana acts, I'm surprised to not see Bon Iver's "For Emma..." or Bright Eyes "I'm Wide Awake...". I'm looking for Sufjan, did I miss him? Seems like somebody that would have at least one appearance on here.

I also don't see Carly Rae's "EMOTION" which if we wanna include recent influential pop artists, I kind of feel like that should be on there. That should be there before Billie's "When We All Fall Asleep..." frankly.

I'd take lists like this more seriously wouldn't they sort albums after idiotic criteria like "relevance" or "impact".

Lists like these are better when it's more specific to it's genre. It's fans can likely discover something new from it, and less likely to get up in arms about something like Britney Spears being ranked above Yes (grr).

I'm okay with this list, as it has to include so many genres, but there are some huge omissions:

    Soundgarden--Badmotorfinger, Superunknown
Alice In Chains- Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies
    Nine Inch Nails- The Fragile
Guns N' Roses- Use Your Illusion
Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage, Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules
    Deep Purple- Machinehead, Burn
Blue Oyster Cult- Tyranny and Mutation
    Rush- Moving Pictures
    Van Halen- 1984, 5150
    Aerosmith- Pump
Alice Cooper- School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome to my Nightmare
    Curve- Doppelganger
    Crow- soundtrack
    Singles- soundtrack

Sometimes it's interesting to read these lists, but honestly, they seem kind of irrelevant. There's such a wide range of music out there, and most of it never makes the list.

Ranking stuff so broadly is less and less appealing to me. Would be more interested to see lists that compile essential albums from each genre. It doesn't make a lot of sense to compare TDS to like, 350 of these albums.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the tenth best album of all time? Ok.

I guess it makes sense that this magazine bashed Mule Variations and Drukqs in the same issue that celebrated Smash Mouth.

Puting one Sinatra album @282 when Beyonce and Taylor Swift are in the top 100 seems kind of silly to me.

I'm okay with What's Going On being #1. It's arbitrary, and one could make a case for that being the choice.

    ETA--no Eurythmics?

One problem that I have with this list is artists like Kanye West being so far up, while bands like NIN, Pearl Jam and the Pumpkins are lower down. In 20 years will My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy still be seen being as brilliant as it is today? Will it still be considered to be 17th best album of all-time? I'm not saying that all newer albums shouldn't be considered to be on the top 500, but the glow will fade for some of them.

Yes, I feel like this was the defining rock album of 1994. And this coming from someone who worships TDS, Vitalogy, Monster, Purple, etc.

To not have Tool on there (Aenima and Lateralus- at least one of them) is a fucking joke. Kanye is not only too high on some of those, he’s also on that list too much.

    Fitty Cent? el oh el

That's why this ranking stuff is ultimately just dumb... and i almost don't even want to entertain an argument that claims My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is better than Dark Side of the Moon.

Then there's nothing by Aphex Twin, Skinny Puppy, or Autechre... but thank goodness they included Green Day's American Idiot. Oooooh, and John Mayer made the cut! Thank goodness!

and Disintegration by The Cure is number 116 or so?

In the end it just gives RS a reason for people to talk about RS. It’s used to make people jibba jabba about them.

Wouldn't take these lists too seriously, and pleases probably roughly 0% of music fans. Just have some fun and complain about it lol.

Y'know what's weird to me on some level though...

If "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" is the 17th greatest shit ever made, isn't it weird that this accolade is being awarded by Rolling Stone...

The song "Blame Game" tried to steal the music from a track off the Aphex Twin album Drukqs. They got caught and had to pay and acknowledge it was built around a sample (really almost just track playback) under a new beat, of the song Avril 14th. Rolling Stone gave Drukqs a legendarily low score, as if to just insult it by comparison to any other music ever made by awarding it the lowest score they ever put out.

Then they can put out a stupid list w/ 500 "greatest albums" and still fail to say Aphex Twin was worth noting. I'm a HUGE Pavement fan, but did they need to be mentioned 3 times? Not if there wasn't enough room for Aphex Twin.

Led Zeppelin not having an album until 58 also seems pretty absurd.

After reading this list I did order The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Joni Mitchell's Blue and Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder (I had the other albums in the top 10). I figured that if these albums are so highly regarded I should probably check them out and add them to my collection.

That Stevie Wonder album is fucking GOLDEN omg. That Joni album is also one of the best albums ever recorded, omg.

The Beatles' have all those albums and they choose THAT ONE for #5? That's fucking goofy.
