this new record is on par with Low, Scary Monsters, Outside, Station to Station, Heroes....

It's on that equal level of greatness... and it's great on some level that is almost (almost) inaccessible to me.... and it's a frightening place that I'm not eager to fully understand.

"in the center of it all....in the center of it all. You're on high."

Probably not the right lyrics, but I liked hearing it that way

Growing up in Czechoslovakia, you could not just go and buy a "west" record anytime, but we still had a lot of great music - The Wall (recorder to tape from radio), Gabriel So, Foreigner 4, Yes 90125, Def Leppard, Rolling Stones, Beatles... but for unknown reason NOT Bowie (so I bought my dad Nothing has Changed LPs for Christmas 2014, like "here, you have something to catch up":-). So I was really introduced to Bowie when coworker - still the only person I know personally who listens to music - copied to cassette tape "Earthling" for me - and I liked it so much that I bought "Hours..." original cassette when it came out, and I still like it, I know maybe it is too "ordinary songs" in comparison. And here is my question - what is to regret about being a thursday's child?

PS: I was just out on small winter walk, and somehow thinking about "here I am, not quite dying..." well...

There is an old nursery rhyme about the day you were born, my mom taught it to me as a child:

Monday's child is fair of face
Tuesday's child is full of grace
Wednesday's child is full of woe
Thursday's child has far to go
Friday's child is loving and giving
Saturday's child works hard for a living
But the child born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

I don't know if you have something similar there, but here in the West there is a nursery rhyme for children about the destinies or fortunes of all those born on a certain day of the week. Like, the child of Monday is supposed to be beautiful, the child of Tuesday is graceful, the child of Wednesday is woeful (which is the day Bowie was actually born on), etc. Thursday's children are supposedly the travellers, ones who have "far to go". I think Bowie pointed out on the VH1 Storytellers live show that he actually got the title from Eartha Kitt but I always think about the line in the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties" (when Nico sings "Thursday's Child is Sunday's Clown" it feels like she is saying "watch out, pride goes before a fall").

So, it's partially a reference to childhood, partially an astrological "doomed by fate" message, partially a nostalgic callback to the sixties.

Yes, he sings in the song "Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday" so he's obviously referencing the rhyme, which is about fate. (I was born on a Sunday, muaaahaha.)

And I am pretty sure he also got the title from the Eartha Kitt autobiography (not album).

Yes, though I couldn't find the book cover in which he said she was "standing sexily by a tree"... maybe this is the one he meant:

    Interesting, thank you @botley , @allegro .

Also, maybe this is for facepalms, but last monday one PRINTED newspaper here had headline "Bowie had a perfect weekend"... and I could not help but smile through the tears a bit...

I love Klaus. It's a huge tragedy that he died so young.

I'll be the guy to just bring it up and get it over with:

I have Venture Bros. to thank for introducing me to that man, and by extension going back to check out said performance. Riveting.

I had a RED LOW once, but flipped it in a moment of weakness... : (

The high seas where pirates dwell has a decent torrent of high res rips of the RCA pressings to tide one over while trying to score vinyl.

So, the widescreen version of Lazarus was removed from the director's website and replaced with the standard one. I hope somebody grabbed it before he removed it....

Heh, the version of Bowie's "Heroes" I haven't heard is the french one, iirc he recorded all three. I've got Helden via the Sound + Vision boxed set.

Does anyone know when the Bowie issue of Time Magazine is supposed to hit stands? Also, does anyone know where the best place to buy it would be? I was thinking I would be able to grab it from Amazon but it seems they only sell subscriptions. Would a place like CVS or Target have it? Barnes and Noble?

Almost positive this will be part of the next "Five Years" boxset. When the first one came out, the website stated "the first in a series"

Next vinyl box set (1974-1979) should include:

    Diamond Dogs
    Young Americans
    Station To Station
    Low
    'Heroes'
    Lodger
    +
    David Live
    Stage

Hopefully this is sooner rather than later. Looking forward to hi-res downloads for those.

I'd only buy single records, though, and that's just happening right now for the first Five Years box. Hopefully the next one does it all at once, box and individual.

Maybe it will include a bonus disc of stuff like "John I'm Only Dancing (Again)", a cover of "It's Hard to Be a Saint in the City", and other rarities. Oh, and this coming Xmas. Let's all make a campaign for "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" to be #1 in the U.K. Xmas single charts.

    Nassau show in 1976.

There's also a couple reel-to-reels from Sigma Sound floating around from YOUNG AMERICANS. Visconti claimed once that there's essentially another LP recorded during the LODGER sessions.
