I get that about the mask in Seattle! I'm high risk & would be stupid not to wear it. I have a friend in Montana who refuses to believe. Says its just the flu & will go away when it gets warm. Ahhhh, it's summer in Australia. Maybe part of the problem is cancelling cultural events. The only culture is going to a bar, drinking, hopping in a car & driving 20 miles to next bar which is virtually identical to the one you left half hour ago. He'll wake up when the first bar in town closes due to this.

I was wearing a mask at the supermarket in mid-February because I’d just been to the doctor and was diagnosed with viral bronchitis (I had to pick up a Rx at the pharmacy, plus some other stuff). Nobody looked at me twice. (The mask was from the dr.’s office.)

Even Trump is on TV today telling people “this is bad.”

Dude I'm tellin you. It's gonna be BAD. There are SO MANY motherfuckers in KC here who legit just either don't give a shit or think they're fucking immune or some shit. Our Mayer here in KC had to publicly come out and tell everyone in the city to take it seriously, as over the weekend he drove around to see how many people were actually staying home and he found endless bar after endless bar with lines out the doors. Dude literally had to tell the city to be better. And it's shit like that why in a week, the midwest will be the new epicenter.

Ah the Uk government once again showing how incompetent they are. Announcing we should all work from home is possible, but not MAKING any business shut down, so in London today it's business as usual, because nobody is going to shut unless they are made too...so the spread will continue.

In other new i have a coin electrical meter, and the landlord upped the rate yesterday so i'm now paying more then double what i was...just in time for when we all have to stay home...cunt.

Exactly this, it’s so wishy washy! We’re going on a last hurrah visit to a pub this afternoon though before they do go on lockdown and we end up in self isolation with our kids for a month - not sure if we’ll come out alive

in general news Idris Alba has tested positive for Coronavirus despite having no symptoms at all which is a bit worrying as how would you know to self isolate?

the uk government aren’t forcing places to close down as they know these businesses will be able to claim some sort of insurance so boris is hoping these business owners will do it out of free will which isn’t going to happen when there’s money to be made for them to survive and for there businesses to survive whether that be a bar or a cafe or restaurant or whatever

Annnnd i have access to work from home...but there's a tiny bit of small print. As the Gov haven't made it law my company still expect some people to come in, so we're being split in teams, team A in this week, Team B next week and back again.

...this won't stop the spread and just feels like we're making life hard for ourselves for little benefit.

I think the whole point of things right now is to self isolate, period. If you're out of groceries, fine, go get 'em. Otherwise, fucking stay home whether you feel sick or not. Easier said than done, I know. But I think that's what we're aiming for at the moment.

this is such an unbelievably, unexpected seismic event, im still trying to make sense of it, so bewildering. 1000 new cases a day in Spain, past few days, jesus.
I have friends under Quarantine in Milan.

In Iran its absolutely devastating the government is too scared to release the figures. all unprecedented.
When was the last Pandemic to effect Western Europe/US like this? was it the Spanish Flu 100 years ago? its all unreal. totally unexpected, you sort of think this type of thing cant happen in the 2020's.

never seen anything paralyze Europe like this. its not the Spanish Flu, 100 years ago, that was on another level of brutality, but still this is really bad.

That's exactly the mindset my wife and I have taken. We haven't left the house since our grocery run on Saturday. We were both already working from home so it's obviously way easier for us to do, and I fell incredibly lucky for that right now.

Super weird to have a birthday during all this.

I don't know if it's been mentioned already - NY has closed all gyms, movie theaters, and casinos. All restaurants and bars are only take-out and delivery. Grocery stores remain open.

Funny mention: I just got an email from Hot Topic that they're closing all it's stores (and continuing to pay their employees.)

    Coronavirus - COVID-19

I’m having to go to the grocery store everyday because my fridge is still broken. It was scheduled to be repaired today but there’s no sign of that happening. No answer at the repair company. No answer from the manufacturer. I cannot believe this shit.

Edit: a repair man just called saying they’re on the way. Hallelujah

Things are still a mess in Washington state (see link below). I was supposed to see 1 of my doctors today & was going to get set up for a test. They called yesterday & cancelled my appointment because I have some but not all of virus symptoms. So I asked about a test & was told I still can't get one because there aren't enough kits. I called my other doctor & got the same message & that it didn't sound like COVID 19. Given that the manifestations differ from person to person I'm not happy with this prognosis over the phone. Evidently the WHO message about test, test, test hasn't been received yet. I still do not feel well at all & am going to pursue some other avenues toward a test. A pharmacy chain has set up a drive up test station near where I live but no one knows what the criteria there is yet. My doctor did take me off the new chemo medicine. At this point, I haven't had effective RA therapy since late last fall & the RA is on the rampage. It is getting very hard to get around. As indicated in the article below, there is much confusion in the health care system here with opposing messages being put forth depending on who you talk to. The graph from Mr DDD above shows we are rapidly approaching 1000 cases in the state. I think that if the authorities ever get their act together & everyone who needs a test gets one, that number is going to increase greatly. I am still acting responsibly with isolation, etc & trying to get tested since I am high risk. It is depressing though. I should be seeing the rheumatologist if for no other reason than to have my blood tested to make sure the drug I just stopped hasn't caused another problem. It is dangerous stuff. Also, to figure out the next step. The current model clearly isn't working & the damage is accumulating rapidly.

So now my eldest niece has a cough and the school has told my sister and brother in law they have to self isolate for 14days...which is understandably causing issues for my granddads funeral next week...

This all couldn't have happened at a worse time

Same. Our daughter has Cerebral Palsy, we will likely rely on the support of people like @richardp for the rest of our daughter's life. THANK YOU! I know this work is hard on DSP's, coordinators and day program employees, because there just aren't many options.

I wanna know how he got to be tested in the first place, when people showing clear symptoms can't get access to tests.

I can almost read your mind. I'll answer this: he's British and I don't know what the specifics on testing are over there and he knew he had been in contact with someone who tested positive so it may have been a factor too.

But @WorzelG is right. The asymptomatic people who are positive is what truly worries me. They don't spread this willingly, they just don't know. Stay home and stay safe, my friends!

Finally, after 3 days of back and forth with my bosses I got some movement on my entire department being declared essential and having to work (we empty a mailbox and ship it to another office, that's literally the only part that has us deemed essential).

Instead of needing my entire department in to empty the mailbox that gets 20-100 letters on an average day, I've got them to cut it down to 1 staff member at a time only. With only 1 person in the building we're still isolated. I still think we should just put a sign up and all stay home, but at least it's something.

I don't know why that took 3 days of arguing when our Prime Minister is telling everyone to stay the fuck home, but at least I got somewhere eventually.

Interestingly enough I got my job offer from the company that just hired me, which is good. The bad news is that my start date is a month from now, or 'whenever the office reopens.'
