    Martin Scorsese film discussion

Martin Scorsese has a new film coming up, with De Niro and DeCaprio called Killers of the Flower Moon.

    Looks awesome.

I just saw King of Comedy and the Aviator, both great films. My goal is to see all of his movies (and re-watch some others) this year.

    My favorites:

    Goodfellas
    The Wolf of Wall Street
Mean Streets (really need to see again)
    The Irishman
    Casino
    Taxi Driver

    Just re-watched that, great film.

Just saw Hugo--very good movie and very different for Scorsese.

Hugo is one of those movies that absolutely should be seen in 3D. It's the only real example I can think of where the framing is just made to benefit from that format. Other movies managed to use 3D exceptionally well, but Scorsese really mastered that tool when he used it.

I just saw The Age of Innocence, and it sort of reminded me of Parasite in that it dealt with all these wealthy people who were totally oblivious to their privilege. The movie wasn't trying to point that out or even address class, but I still saw that at work.

Great film, stunning visuals and it was perfectly cast.

Scorsese Shorts Criterion release on May 26

Bringing Out The Dead is excellent. I feel like that one gets overlooked.

My favourite Scorsese is The Last Waltz. Always loved the Taxi Driver score that Bernard Herrmann did, also.

I just saw Casino again. I think that's his best movie and it never gets old.

Killers of the Flower Moon is out 10/20.

    Great cast.

As far as big budget hollywood films go I'd probably agree.

I was debating on seeing it today but decided not to. Hopefully I'll see it in the theaters. If not I'll catch it on Apple TV. My attention span has been going backwards as I'm getting older and I'm not sure I can do a long movie anymore, without chunking it up a half hour at a time or so.

I thought Killers was possibly his best movie. So well executed. Great performances. It's like... Weirdly like Goodfellas? But with respect for the victims? Definitely my favorite movie of the year, sorry Barbie

I caught a lot of parallels with Goodfellas too. Storytelling and filmmaking wise.

Ain't no way I trust Scorsese with a THREE AND A HALF HOUR movie to watch it in theaters w/o an intermission after how brutally slow The Irishman was. I'll watch it in two nights illegally next month thank you very much.

I also loved it. The time flew by for me. It made me want to go through Scorsese's filmography and watch the ones I missed as well as rewatching the ones I haven't seen in a while.

    Also, this movie was made by a 78 year-old screenwriter, 80 year-old director, 83 year-old editor, 80 year-old composer (RIP), and 80 year-old supporting actor. That's fucking cool.

Some of the court room scenes were identical for character placement and actions by characters, without giving too much away! Goodfellas remains my favourite film of all time, but I did thoroughly enjoy KOTFM. And the last five minutes was so unique, was goose bump time.

One of Scorsese's unsung heroes for me is Silence. So atmospheric for such a different story, while brutal at the same time.

Also love The Irishman, but despite being a huge Pacino fan, didn't enjoy Al all that much in it.

The most shocking thing this week surrounding the film was Mark Kermode, a UK journalist, saying he met recently with Thelma Schoonmaker, MS' long time editor. She corrected Kermode's pronunciation of Marty's surname. Score-sez-ee apparently.

    Saw it tonight, great film.

Even though it was a slow-burn, the 3.5 hour runtime just flew by. One of his most somber movies. I felt a tension, and uneasiness throughout the movie. I really felt for Mollie (Lily Gladstone).

Silence is one of his best films. Spoke to me immensely as I have a complicated relationship with spirituality and faith.

Too early to tell yet tbh,it takes like 6months into the next year to catch up with the best indie cinema has to offer lol. I think this year I was most impressed with Skinamarink,Aftersun,Soft&Quiet,All The Beauty And The Bloodshed,Reality. Also realized I haven't forgotten about Beau Is Afraid since I've seen it so gotta revisit that.

Silence is top tier Scorsese for sure. Although he made one decision that I absolutely HATED toward the end of it. I won't spoil anything but let's just say that he made the choice to use audio when I thought the film would have been SO much more honest and powerful without including it. Other than that one ill-advised choice I thought it was perfect. His gangster films get the credit but I'd much rather he pursued projects like that. Haven't seen the new one yet but it looks like something I will absolutely love.

I can't really comment on best movies of the year because I don't really try and see movies as they come out. I'd much rather go back and learn about films I've overlooked from the past. But I did see Beau is Afraid, and while I think Ari Aster may have used a bit too much comedy to kind of let himself off the hook, I'd also say it was the best film I've seen that came out in 2023. I loved Hereditary but I think this one was his best so far.

Seen the film yesterday and liked it a lot. Goodfellas comparisons from above are on point.
Loved the cameo at the end.
De Niro was so much better playing a character of his own age, rather than, you know, the Irishman.

This was the longest movie I have ever seen in a theater. So if you're going to see it, be aware of your bladder in the last hour, lol.

They could have thrown in an intermission. I think the last movie I attended with an intermission was Gettysburg.

RRR for me, which was three hours. While I personally don't mind not having an intermission, I agree they should probably be mandatory for movies once they hit the three hour mark. The only events over three hours I can think of are plays, musicals, concerts and sporting events, all of which have built-in breaks. If it was just a patience issue, that's one thing, but people need to pee!

An intermission is a no-brainer for these movie chains. Having one gives them the potential for more snack & drink sales, so might as well do it. We went to Iceland last year around this time & saw Black Panther 2 there w/an intermission. It was glorious. It's standard for many of their movie showings, regardless of length.

For longer films, I avoid beverages. If the theater is desperate to keep drink and snack sales from dwindling, perhaps offer a deal on them after the film lets out, as unconventional as that sounds.
