I'd actually be interested in a study of Trump's presentation of religiousness over the course of his life. Years from now, though. Way down the road, when I've had twenty minutes to myself where I don't have to think of him. Obviously, he says he's Christian because you still pretty much have to in high-level American politics, but I think even the religious in his base see through it—many of them are the same people who can be Klan-level antisemitic and still love Jesus by claiming, sure, he was born a Jew, but only to destroy corrupt Judaism. Even some of the folks who think Trump was literally sent by god to watch over us seem to believe that he knows not what he is, and his divinity is invisible to him (and maybe purer because of it?). I think I get the fringe ideology of that group, but I admittedly don't have the greatest handle on the argument for the—sigh—less radical versions of his alleged divinity/divine appointment.

Anyways, a thing that's pissed me off about him is that I highly suspect he's going to end up, in the common history, as an argument against atheism in American politics. His inability to either know right from wrong or—worse—his utter lack of care regarding the very idea of morality is going to help people like my upstairs neighbor, who recently made basically this argument to my wife, that people without gods cannot function as ethical beings and can therefore only ruin societies. I assume that, like Christians did with Hitler, there will be hard work done to forget he ever endorsed religiousness and push the ownership of and blame for Trump straight to the atheists.

I'm so far...left?...on the spectrum of atheism, I'm pretty much an antitheist. I'd be happy if I woke up and found the world had suddenly forgotten all gods and religions—they did some great things for socializing humanity, but I think the time has passed, and what good is left in them can be got better elsewhere. But I'm also not a complete idiot, so I realize that the best plausible reality is one in which everyone can believe in any/all/some/no gods and the only religious legislation should be, more or less, the First Amendment. So, in practice, I'm an atheist who keeps mostly mum about that fact in conversations about politics because, wow, do people, by and large, still not trust us with ideas about governance. It sometimes seems nothing scares Americans in their day-to-day more than the idea of a bisexual atheist in charge of something.

Anyways, that being said, I cannot imagine the damage Trump is doing to the future of American atheism. I feel, I assume, how a Muslim might feel if the first Muslim American president was somehow Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Has anyone ever actually issued an executive order that just says, "Scratch that last one"?

Fuck any existing doctrine, legal or moral, get out the way 'cause I'm getting mine.
*cough* as a, uh, former serviceperson I can confirm this is not true. It's the constitution, and that's it. Yeah he's the boss but that doesn't mean much when it comes to brass tacks.

    https://www.thebalancecareers.com/mi...orders-3332819
The military oath taken at the time of induction into the military is as follows:"I,____________, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God"

Notice the oath states, “I will obey the orders of the President of the United States...”, but the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) Article 90 states that military personnel need to obey the "lawful orders of his/her superior. The duty and obligation to obey lawful orders creates no grey area for discussion. But does the military member have a duty to DISOBEY “unlawful orders” including orders of senior officers, Secretary of Defense and even the President of the United States? The UCMJ actually protects the soldier in this situation as he/she has a moral and legal obligation to the Constitution and not to obey unlawful orders and the people who issue them.

These have to be strong examples of a direct violation of the Constitution and the UCMJ and not the military member’s own opinion.
it's wriggly sure because it's kind of like the porn argument (you know it when you see it) but it's not fealty by any stretch.

On the other hand if we are choosing our battle in my opinion there are far more important ones to win. Even engaging this issue risks pushing people to the right
except it is not a gun control issue. we will still have the 2a (and it’s implications) if the nra was dissolved. the nra was used to funnel russian money to trump in the 2016 election. of course trump the liar would twist it. that’s what he does. russian meddling in the election has left us with the worst person in charge during a pandemic. the AG is doing her job by taking action. this is what she’s supposed to do.

we still have to do what’s right even if it’s viewed as political. the reason we are stuck with the fake president during the pandemic is because the GOP chose to be political instead of doing what’s right at the impeachment trial. if they had chosen removal, maybe (i know it’s a stretch) pence and pelosi would’ve come up with a testing plan and we’d be on the other side of the pandemic. a month and a half ago trump said he told his people to slow the testing down. congress has done nothing about that. they should’ve had special hearings on what could be done about testing and find out if there’s anything malicious happening to slowing down testing. people are dying daily. a rapid testing and tracing plan two months ago could’ve made a huge difference in where we are right now. none of that happened because the senate dems don’t want to be political. they’re waiting for america to vote him out. fuck all the senate for doing nothing during the pandemic. $1200 isn’t shit. fix the testing so we can go back to life.

we still have to do what’s right even if it’s viewed as political. fuck the nra and fuck anyone who’s willing to let this guy grift america and ruin everything.

Americans have a Constitutionally-guaranteed and regulated right to own guns, and Americans don’t need to pay the NRA to keep those rights; ESPECIALLY not so some asshole can enjoy a lavish lifestyle, tax-free.

    Anyone saying otherwise is FULL.OF.SHIT.

This NRA investigation and suit wasn’t even driven by current politics; it’s been going on for YEARS. EVERYONE knows that LaPierre has been living like a billionaire off of NRA funds. It’s been tick-tick-tick for years. The NRA has been on the brink of bankruptcy for years, GUESS WHY?????

Liberals own guns, but they DO NOT belong to the NRA. The right is now QUITTING the NRA.
