a few of my favorite films from this decade, in reverse chronological order. i will probably add more later.

    • into the spiderverse
    • thor ragnarok
    • blade runner 2049
    • get out
    • the void
    • arrival
    • mad max fury road
    • gone girl
    • paranorman
    • the girl with the dragon tattoo

and as a bonus, the award for worst movie i've watched from the last 10 years most certainly goes to the neon demon. i garnered almost no enjoyment whatsoever from watching that film, other than some striking visuals. i was so uncomfortable the whole time i was watching it but not in a "ooh this movie is making me examine something" sort of way; i just wanted to turn it off but was afraid to offend my friend who had been pushing me to watch it for months. ugh.

it's a Laika animated film (stop-motion, same people who did Coraline, Kubo, etc.) about a kid who can see and communicate with ghosts. lives in a small town with a questionable history and helps to uncover some secrets from the past. it's beautiful, heart-wrenching, fun, funny, scary, and the score (by jon brion) is incredible.

Paranorman was a wonderful little stop motion film, but for me not quite as good as Kubo and the Two Strings, that was fucking masterful!

i only watched kubo for the first time over the summer but i loved it so much i bought the score on vinyl. i think with more viewings it might overtake paranorman, but i'm not sure...

Something I was thinking about recently: How do you decide upon your favorite movies? I liked quite a few movies in the last ten years... many of them a lot, but what makes ten of them my favorite movies? A special emotional response? The number of times I watched them? The impression on first viewing? What is it?

i'd say it's a combination of all those things. for example: the four films i have listed as favorites on my letterboxd profile are brick, charade, in the mouth of madness, and hocus pocus. four very different films. but each of them has special resonance in my life, through a combination of all of the criteria you described. and there are other films i've only seen once or twice that i would still consider favorites, because of the intense impact they had on me. i think it's up to each person to determine their own criteria for deciding what's a favorite, but i don't think there's a wrong way to do it, by any means.

I haven't watched enough movies to make a top 10, nor do I actually remember what I've been watching exactly this decade, but to pick some from others' lists:
Nightcrawler, Gone Girl and Parasite would be there for sure. I am intrigued by the Lighthouse, but haven't gotten around to watch it yet. I'd also say they did Warcraft justice, albeit if you are not a fan, it probably fell short for you. I also enjoyed Excalibur, which got overwhelmingly negative reviews, so that would be my controversial pick.

Get Out was okay, but I'll never understand the fandom around it. From the reviews I thought it redefined cinema or something.

Watching Marriage Story (possibly) today, so I may edit it into the "list", but from the trailer, I doubt so.
