Pixies - Beneath the Eyrie & beyond

The new album leaked this morning. It's really freakin' good. This is not the thread to talk about that gossip shit. They're touring the UK & Europe for the next few weeks, which is exciting.

Paz Lenchantin throws down some killer bass on this one, it'll surely make you move your booty. Joey's fantastic lead guitar heroics are all here, with his trademark zaniness deployed to dress the set where required. The bouncy, surf-rock Dave is solid as ever, with just enough finesse to handle those occasionally tricky stop-start time changes. Charles has undeniably taken a leap forward in songwriting (with a lot of help from Paz, particularly with the words to song where she's singing lead), and settled into a more comfortable range vocally that doesn't lean on screaming his way through every chorus to sell it.

I've been following along with the documentary podcast they've been doing, which goes behind the scenes and follows the entire recording process in a fly-on-the-wall style, mixed with candid interviews with all the band members and producer Tom Dalgety — who did an absolutely superb job. It's fascinating stuff, and really enhanced my enjoyment of the album.

Here's their Late Show performance of "Catfish Kate":

Not the biggest Pixies fan in the world but I've kept an eye on things since they started releasing new music. It seems every album has gotten better since Indie Cindy, and what I've heard from this one is pretty sweet.

I like the album, although it took me a few spins. I'd love to hear the demos they put out on the deluxe edition... too bad they only came out on the vinyl version.

    Goth Surf Rock, folks.

Have you seen my Desiree? She rides the sea of silver gray
You’ll find her at the end of summer’s day
The waves were high and crystal clean
If I were you and you were me
We would do the same as Desiree
    Just slay it!

Long rider in the morning tide
She took the highway to the County Line
She wiped out in the modern sense
    Take it away now!

I believe in Miki Dora "Da Cat"
I believe in Whitey, Greenough and Nat
I believe in Leonard, Peanuts and Yan
    I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe

Sooo, I just found out they put out the "demos" (a.k.a. 9 unreleased songs from the album's sessions) digitally! Great addition to the 12 song album.

From earlier this month. Fuck me, they sound so good.

The whole set was broadcast, and briefly appeared on YouTube before BBC6 snatched it off and I didn't save it in time. Bummer! Really wish the shows in Cleveland with NIN had actually happened last year.

I did see it on Youtube before they took it off, they did a great job. Also, shout out to Black Francis for showing up slimmed down, didn't expect that.

    Keep it classy.

I think Charles is looking great, sounds like he has a bit more puff in his lungs as well, for those high notes.

I listened to a tape from Hyde Park (opening for Pearl Jam) & they sound great on that. I still miss Kim a real lot though.
