2010-2019--Your top ten albums of the '10s

The second decade of the 20th century is almost over. What are your top ten picks? I'm very much a child of the 90's, so my list reflects that.

    10. Tori Amos- Native Invader (2017) I've enjoyed most of Tori's later-day albums, some more than others, but her latest was my favorite.

    9. Mark Lanegan- Blues Funeral (2012)
Love pretty much everything Mark Lanegan has released, but damn, this was my favorite, with Gargoyle being a close second.

    8. Smashing Pumpkins- Oceania (2012)
A lot of fans write-off anything Billy did after the 90's, but Oceania is up there as one of the Pumpkin's best albums. The tour was incredible, and the live album for Oceania (its played in its entirety) is also outstanding. A surprisingly strong album after the weak Teargarden project.

    7. Chris Cornell- Higher Truth (2015)
Stylistically, this album reminds me a little bit of Led Zeppelin III. Some of the songs, like "Dead Wishes" are kind of hard to listen to in hindsight, but this reflective, somber album was one of Chris's best solo releases.

    6. Singles Soundtrack Deluxe (2017)
This soundtrack is not from the 10's, but it was released in 2017, so I'll include it. The original soundtrack is one of my favorite albums ever, and the bonus disc here, with a ton of Cornell material (four unreleased songs, instrumentals), and lots of other gems (Truly, live material, parts of the score), make this one of my favorite releases of the last decade.

    5. Slash/Slash (2010)
I haven't been super into Slash's solo work with Myles Kennedy, but his first solo album, with Ozzy, Lemmy, Chris Cornell, Kid Rock, etc. is an awesome album. The deluxe edition, with Alice Cooper and others is definitely worth getting--the two discs together are an amazing body-of-work. Easily tied with the first Velvet Revolver album as the best thing Slash did outside of Guns N' Roses.

    4. Soundgarden- King Animal (2012)
Way better than most reunion albums, SG picked up right where they left off. Some great later-day gems like "By Crooked Steps" and Halfway There."

    3. Nine Inch Nails- NTAE/AV/BW (2016-2018)
This trilogy is an amazing body-of-work and the roll-out, getting them in installments, was very satisfying.

    2. Van Halen- A Different Kind of Truth (2012)
Long, long, long suffering Van Halen fans finally got the album we were waiting for since 1984. Dave and Eddie still have an amazing chemistry. ADKOT sounds retro, but with a modern sheen--striking a good balance, with one foot in 1976 (most of the songs date back to then) and the other in 2012.

    1. Nine Inch Nails- Hesitation Mark (2013)
A very satisfying album after a brief drought. Just a great collection of songs, still listen to it all the time.

    Honorable mentions--QOTSA, The Foo Fighters.

It's that special time of our lives again, where not only do we compile our "best of" 2019 lists, but this is an extra special year, because it's the end of a decade and we get to make these "best of" the decade lists.
I'll need some serious time to sit down and do this, but it's been on my list of things to do with best movies, music and video games of the decade.

    10. Cave In - White Silence
    9. Skeleton Key - Gravity is the Enemy
    8. Sumac - The Deal
    7. Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis
    6. The Black Queen - Fever Daydream
    5. Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks
    4. Melvins - The Bride Screamed Murder
    3. Old Man Gloom - NO
    2. Dillinger Escape Plan - One of Us is the Killer

#1 on this list was easy for me. The rest, not so much. There are a lot of albums that could pretty easily be switched out or reordered on this list.

the decade was much better than the noughties/00's for music, i think Youtube and alternative media played a role in it being much better.

really liked 2010-2015, best phase for music since the early 90s, i cannot beleive how shit the noughties were in comparison, people were more freely exposed to better music in the 2010s therefore made better music.

you cant even compare the dead end stunted noughties/00s to the last 10 years, in every field music has been better.

For me, the seeds for the current wave of awesome music started around 2007-2008 and then in 2009 so much incredible stuff was released inspiring the next decade. The early aughts were definitely weak in comparison.

I'm not even going to rank these because I don't think I can after a certain point. Here's everything in alphabetical order by artist:

Chevelle - The North Corridor (2016)
Deftones - Koi No Yokan (2012)
Nine Inch Nails - Not the Actual Events (2016) / Add Violence (2017) / Bad Witch (2018) [Judging by the first post, I assume this counts as one.]
The Prodigy - No Tourists (2018)
Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork (2013)
Russian Circles - Blood Year (2019)
    Skinny Puppy - Weapon (2013)
SUMAC - Love in Shadow (2018)
    Tool - Fear Inoculum (2019)
Chelsea Wolfe - Hiss Spun (2017)

I even had a hard time narrowing those down. I had all of SUMAC's albums listed at one point, but decided to narrow it down to one per artist (with exception to the trilogy).

Edit: DAMN IT! I FORGOT THOM YORKE'S ANIMA!

This is the truth spoken right here. I tried to do 10 myself... Couldn't do it.
Here's a list of 20. I tried to keep it to 1 per artist... with the exception of NIN's Trilogy, if that counts as 1 or 3? Who knows.

This was way harder than it looks. Doing a best of the year is one thing, but a best of 10 years is no easy feat.

Street Sweeper Social Club - The Ghetto Blaster (2010)
Austra - Feel it Break (2011)
Foo Fighters - wasting light (2011)
    Trust - TRST (2012)
David Bowie - The next day (2013)
    Ghost - infestissumam (2013)
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (2013)
The Interrupters - The Interrupters (2014)
Lindemann - Skills In Pills (2015)
Marilyn Manson - The Pale Emperor (2015)
    Awolnation - Run (2015)
Pup - The Dream Is over (2016)
    Skold - The Undoing (2016)
NIN - Not the actual events / Add Violence / BW (2016-2018)
AFI - The Blood Album (2017)
    <PIG> - The Gospel (2017)
Priest - The New Flesh (2017)
    Dreamcar - Dreamcar (2017)
    Sonoio - Fine (2018)
    Rammstein - Rammstein (2019)

1.First off, i bet TOOL will be vying for number 2, but, it seems goofy to include it, as the record was released about 59 hours ago.
2.Secondly, 1 album PER ARTIST. (or 2-3 EP/mixtapes.) for instance, I LOOOOOOVED Hesitation Marks. i LOVED the other 2 Old 97's albums, and Earl Sweatshirt albums.
3.while i DID go ahead and try to rank them, i've already had to change it like 5 times. So i guess the order is kind of subject to change, except #1, which is Acidrap by Chance the Rapper. i'm pretty sure that shit saved my life.
    4. IMPORTANT: No one gives a fuck what my favorite albums of the decade are, and it DEFINITELY doesn't MATTER. This is key.

    Honorable mentions:
    Boards of Canada-Tomorrow's Harvest
    Tricky- Ununiform
    The Breeders- All Nerve
Das Racist -Shut Up, Dude/Sit Down, Man
    Run the Jewels-Run the Jewels
Robert Plant- Lullaby and the Ceaseless Roar
    Grimes-Visions
    Rasputina-Sister Kinderhook

    12. Joey Badass-1999 (thx @bobbie solo , for this one)
    11. Ghostemane-N/O/I/S/E and Hexada and Human Error
    10. Billie Eilish-When We All Fall Asleep Where Do We Go?
    9. Tyler, The Creator-Igor
    8. Earl Sweatshirt-Some Rap Songs
    7. Rush-Clockwork Angels
    6. HTDA-HTDA EP and An Omen EP
    5. Old 97s-Graveyard Whistling
    4. Watch The Throne (Jay-Z/Kanye West)-Watch the Throne
    3. NIN-Trilogy
    2. David Bowie-Blackstar
    1. Chance the Rapper-Acidrap

Thought I'd give last.fm a shot and see what I listened to the most since 01.01.2010 since that is probably the most un-biased way to list these. In no order:

01 Mark Lanegan - bubblegum / blues funeral
    02 Beastmilk - climax
03 Nine Inch Nails - hesitation marks
04 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - beat the devil's tattoo
05 Daughn Gibson - me moan
06 Rival Sons - great western valkyrie
07 Lana Del Rey - born to die
08 UNKLE - where did the night fall
09 Father John Misty - fear fun
    10 The Loranes - trust

This is probably missing alot what I would consider an amazing record for this decade (Bowie, e.g.), but I'm not too surprised by these numbers. Yet I'm really shocked how much I thought is way more recent than it truly is... 10 years went by FAST!!!

I'm just shocked because I thought HM was kind of panned.
Personally, I think it's hands down NIN's weakest offering.

It's a kid who was yodeling at a Wal-Mart, and became a meme, and then, literally played Coachella over it, I think? And then I'm assuming the kid got a record deal.
It's part of a terrifying Black Mirror style future in which we already live.

Pretty much every artist has a portion of their fanbase write-off later day albums. Hesitant Marks still received excellent reviews.

I agree that the EPs were better overall, but that doesn't mean Hesitation Marks was total dogshit. It might not be the best Nine Inch Nails album, but it didn't need to be in my opinion, and it still holds up. I've probably listened to it more than With Teeth or Pretty Hate Machine since it came out.

As far as it being panned, I think that comes down to the initial gut reaction to the album from some fans more than the actual reaction to it. Reviews were fairly good (not universal praise, but it certainly wasn't panned across the board), and most (level-headed) fans seemed to enjoy it, even if they didn't think it was as essential as The Downward Spiral or The Fragile.

Shit, I agree 100%, @BRoswell , and furthermore, I was REALLY interested in what NIN might have put out if they'd continued to go in the HM direction.

Hesitation Marks wasn't "total dogshit," it was a mixed bag. It started off feeling really inspired and then fizzled out and felt weirdly repetitive, outside of In Two.

Meh. Absolutely loved HM and wouldn't have wanted and don't want a PHM 2.0 or a TDS 2.0. Always keep moving.

It's like old-school Trekies not being into TNG at first. Some fans could never accept Captain Picard, just like some fans couldn't accept the direction Trent took NIN with Hesitation Marks.

I think Ghosts is one of the best things he's put out. The "it's new so I'm scared" point doesn't work against my opinion man, sorry. I also think the EP set is better than Year Zero.

It's not even that controversial, and the worst thing that could happen from fans disliking something is that it would influence the creator.... but I like some stuff more than other stuff, sure.
