Miley Cyrus covers NIN for upcoming Black Mirror episode (spoilers)

This will be its own thread so we're going to bypass NIN-Spotting. I am BEYOND excited to hear what this sounds like.

    https://www.independent.ie/entertain...-38177042.html

Charlie Brooker has revealed Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor was “really happy” for his song lyrics to be changed into pop ones to be performed by Miley Cyrus in the upcoming Black Mirror series.
Brooker, creator and writer of the Netflix series, said: “Actually every song that she (Miley Cyrus) performs in this, they’re all Nine Inch Nails songs that we adapted into pop standards, that was actually one thing that was in the script early on that we had to get permission from Trent Reznor to do that, to re-write some of his tracks as upbeat pop songs.”
Talking at a Q&A held in London, Brooker said Reznor “got it straight away”. He explained: “It was via email and he was really happy, like, pretty quickly. He wanted to see the script and I got to re-write his lyrics in a chirpy way. “I’m not the best lyricist in the world, in the first thing she’s singing ‘I’m stoked on ambition and verve’, instead of ‘you’re gonna get what you deserve’.” Co-producer Annabel Jones added: “He thought it was very funny, he found it all, the dark comedy, very entertaining. There are lots of dark concepts in the film and we just enjoyed a childish subversion of them.”

The weird will eventually overload, alias, and fold back on itself, and the harmonic mirror reality should start to resemble normalcy again soon, right?

The language in the quote is weird. nin is already pretty pop-y. Are they saying they only used the lyrics from nin songs not the music?
Fuck you like an animal? Here’s hoping it’s completely unpredictable.

I think I get what they're going for here, especially when he mentions it being "a childish subversion" of some of the concepts in the episode. It definitely sounds bizarre, but we'll see if it works in the context of the episode.

Link above apparently contains the replaced lyrics

Oh honey, I’ll do anything for you.
Oh honey, just tell me what you want me to.
Oh honey, kiss me up against the wall
Oh honey, don’t think anything just have it all.

Yeah I can’t take it, so don’t you fake it
I know your love’s my destiny
Yeah I can’t take take it, please demonstrate it
Coz I’m going down in history

    Heya-a-a-oh, I’m on a roll,
Riding so high, achieving my goals
    Heya-a-a-oh, I’m on a roll,
Riding so high, achieving my goals

I’m stoked on ambition and verve,
I’m going to get what I deserve.
So full of ambition and verve,
I’m going to get what I deserve.

I'm excited for this. I LOVE Black Mirror and Miley actually has a cool voice even if I don't care for her music. I saw a cover of "Jolene" that she did a few years back, and she's got that nice texture to her voice that really makes me wish she had started a band and done full-on rock music.

The episode sounds interesting with or without the NIN tidbit. That's just extra-awesome icing on the cake.

Here's an article from GQ with some quotes from Trent about the episode - https://www.gq.com/story/black-mirror-miley-cyrus-songs

For those that don't want to click on the link, here are a couple of Trent's quotes:

Reznor, who's quick to praise Cyrus’s performance in the episode both as an actor and a musician covering some of his greatest hits, enjoyed the results too.“I think the most exciting part was when the music tracks came back. You can’t listen to it without a smile. I put it on in the car with my wife and she was like ‘what the fuck is that?’” he says. “It’s just so well done in that style.”

“I’m excited to see those people who pick up on what it actually is, what Nine Inch Nails fans think about it,” Reznor says. “Not that I care that much, but it will make for some interesting social media replies.”

So Trent has (indirectly) worked with both Billy Ray and Miley.

Black Mirror newbie here. Are the episodes stand alone and can be watched without the rest of the series?

Yes, it's like an Outer Limits or Twilight Zone type series in that (most) episodes are standalone and unrelated to one another.

Just finished watching that Black Mirror episode. Story wise it seemed kinda tame for their standards, but hearing that rewrite of HLAH throughout is certainly disorienting. Curious if it will have that effect on people who aren't NIN fans.

I really like the back print of that collab tee. Front is hilarious but I'd probably only ever wear it to a NIN show

I think there are much better Black Mirror episodes, but its amusing to hear and see Miley Cyrus reinterpret some NIN tunes

Right Where It Belongs is covered on a piano by one character from what I've seen and a "pop" version is performed towards the end of the episode of that said song.

I got nothing against Miley (i actually like her), but the cover is bland.

Even Buckcherry did a more interesting version...

Did you hear the same Buck Cherry cover I did, because that was about as bland as bland can get.

Am I missing the version? I'm assuming the version from the episode has the lyrics on the T-shirt that I just bought. The description has "featuring the iconic lyrics of Ashley O."

So... unless someone has a version of the song with "achievin' my goals!" I dunno?

EDIT: Wait, the new season comes out today? Holy shit...

I was confused at first too with the re-worked lyrics, but the exact same lyrics/version posted above.

I believe this is what everyone is looking for:
