Seems to be a promo on Pretty Hate, so between 1989 -> 1993

None of it seems plausible except 1991.

PHM not released until 89, so 88 seems unlikely. Earliest known date was the one in Vancouver, I can't find the article anymore but they mention it here as well (http://www.vancouverneon.com/page_q/luv_a_fair.htm) From the article, that is where I got the Month from. They didn't specify date.

90 they were on tour with JAMC.

91 they had finished up their tour at the beginning of February. Maybe these dates were scrapped and just rescheduled for the end of the year? Seems weird to be doing a one off show in Europe so early in the career of NIN.

Pretty Hate Machine was on Island label for europe ?

If there is a date at London, nearly sure there was others shows. A young american band can't make the travel for just a show (and a promo). This sentence can be change to "a label/producer would not pay such a travel to a young american band without managing at least 5 or 10 dates".

Rjan you think like me :

    1988 : too soon
    1989 : well.. humm...
    1990 : impossible
1991 : why not but not a date alone ! pity we don't have the date of the newspaper
1992 : here is broken so end of pretty hate machine promo.

In 1991, for the September 91 show, this is Head like a hole single that made the promo. It was released in March 1990.
So probably a February 91 show would have Head Like a Hole instead of PHM as promo.

    Everything is strange here.

It may be good to check NME mag for the beginning of 1991.

Could it be a listening party?
Or, since it's ebay auction, it might as well just be a fake.

According to setlist.fm, The Band of Holy Joy played at the Marquee on 28 Feb 1991.

I also found this image here : https://coffeefortwo.wordpress.com/2017/11/12/

    this is really strange.
a listening party would not have a ticket and "live at the marquee" seems quite clear.

It can be a fake of course.

This is an advert from New Music Express sometime in February 1991.

I don't have the time to double-check when Island Records released PHM, but this seems like a promotional tour for the UK release.

*edit* I found an article in NME from August 1991 and it says PHM will be re-released on September 23. Melody Maker has DII coming out the week of November 17, 1990. I'll try and dig through some more periodical archives to see if anything else pops up.

*edit 2* Someone with physical access to the British Library needs to research NME from February-March 1991, and perhaps Melody Maker. The databases/archives I’ve found online and at USF are sparse for UK publications.

It looks like the advert is from the 23 February 1991 issue of NME. A later issue may have a review from the gig or news about the cancellation.

Cancellation, I imagine. No way a gig happened at that time in London, and no one remembers it, or put it into setlist.fm, NIN Historian, etc.

I imagine Island/TVT wanted him to do some promotion in the UK, and Trent probably kiboshed it after finishing nearly a year straight of touring. And then they went there later to do it, after Lollapalooza.

This is most probably a cancellation but something sounds strange.
Having a promo less than a week before is proving this is not only a discussion at the corner of a table.
Having a ticket process is something important.

So, at one time, this show was scheduled.. and probably not alone.
It would be great to understand.

This show absolutely 100% did NOT happen.

I got sent a tape of PHM from the US in 1989. I ordered the import CD in especially to a local shop (£20!) within days of receiving that tape. The album was eventually released in the UK around Autumn 1991, but at that point I'd ordered every single on import. Down In It was picked up by MTV UK 120 Minutes in earlyish 1990 and released in the UK as a 12" around June 1990, with HLAH in July '91 and Sin in November '91.

If that show had happened, or been advertised, I would've got tickets, driven down, gone to the gig, and screamed my head off all night long - which I eventually did at Goldwyns in September. Which is still in my top three gigs of all time, ever.

I was scouring the press every week for any NIN tour dates or UK releases, because my budget couldn't really stretch to import versions of everything.

Not just NIN; I'm assuming this is him. Entertaining live reviews, including ones from the 11/29/1999 and 12/1/1999 NIN shows.

A reddit user posted some of their NIN archives & it included some NME’s from 1991. The article is promoting their dates after the GNR Wembley show, but states it’s the first time Britain can see NIN headline: https://imgur.com/gallery/ChySFhb
