Oh yeah, I like it a lot. There's a lot of things that the song brings out that might go unnoticed despite being a very stripped back song. Ive said this about TDTWWA about how the loud noise represents the inner turmoil of Trent's reaction losing his grandmother, he wants to let it out, but once he does, its just quite and stripped back and low, the verse. The same thing happens here. You might notice on the 2nd verse that the yelling in the background is really low in the mix, its pushed in the background while Trent's low vocals are dominate, same with the last chorus. The dissonant diminished strings in the background add to the tension and build off Trent's broken down state while still being a fairly quiet and stripped back song. Much like TDTWWA, its a very personal song with a lot of emotion and deep meaning that often goes unnoticed and I think its a wonderful song.

It's SOMETHING like that. Those first four are all equally fucking incredible
I can’t understand why “Please” has become such a live rarity. It’s an easy song to pull off live and it’s Fragile-era (which would make plenty of people happy to see live). That and The Great Below. I mean, La Mer still appears. Why not those two?

I bet you can tell a good bit about a person here by what their top ten songs are. On some of our lists there is definitely a theme. Some are collections of the most amped up and rage-y songs, others quiet and somber and deep. Some mostly from the old days, some with a mixture. Some seem to value the most rare tracks. It's really interesting. One could make too much of it of course, but I think that a sincere answer to this question probably tells a careful observer more than we realize.

I think that with Please, it's because it's sort of in praise of drugs.
That being said, Trent is ok with TPD and The Lovers, so if I'm right, it may return

Off the top of my head I'd chose these 10 songs:

    Down In It
    Last
    The Becoming
    Somewhat Damaged
    We‘re In This Together
    The Perfect Drug
    Sunspots
    While I‘m Still Here
    She‘s Gone Away
    God Break Down the Door

There is no particular order, so I sorted it according to their release. These may be subject to change, but I guess that is the case for almost everybody here.

It's a toughie but I think I have to go with:

    10 - The Great Destroyer
    9 - Leaving Hope
    8 - This Isn't The Place
7 - While I'm Still Here/Black Noise (What? I count them as a whole piece)
    6 - Sunspots
    5 - Non-Entity
    4 - The Great Below
    3 - Into The Void
2 - And All That Could Have Been
    1 - In This Twilight

These are some of the songs I can listen to a whole lot and not get sick of, In This Twilight has been my favourite song ever since I discovered it and that was about over 5/6 years ago now.

We should do a tournament and vote on our favorite heavy, soft, deep-cut, cover, and single/hit NIN songs, could prove interesting.

I think you are right and can spot some themes in my own top ten list. I REALLY gravitate towards songs that have a really obvious "swell" or tension-building to them either throughout the song as a whole or during the chorus or whatever. I'm not a musician so I can't really articulate what I mean by that, but a lot of my top ten give me that feeling (Still's version of The Becoming, JLYI, Branches/Bones, Somewhat Damaged, Last, The Great Destroyer).

I also really like it when Trent utilizes softer vocals. (In This Twilight, Find My Way, Beside You in Time) I find vulnerability and tenderness really compelling.

Reptile is the only one on my list that doesn't fit, and I have no idea why I put that one on my initial list. It's just an odd song and I consistently appreciate it.

I’d love TR to put out a book or an essay or something that goes into detail about every song in the catalog, and explain the meaning behind their titles (instrumentals would be particularly interesting to learn about), and the songs themselves. He can be as cryptic or go into as much detail as he sees fit.
