    2018--your favorite albums

I don't really have a top ten list. I'm pretty old school and liked new albums by Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots and Nine Inch Nails. I also enjoyed the new Chris Cornell boxset, Sinatra's new triple live album and the deluxe White Album by the Beatles.

Here is loudwire's top picks. NIN made the list.

    8/10 - Ghost - Prequelle
    8/10 - Sonoio - Fine
    8/10 - <PIG> - Risen
    7/10 - Avatar - Avatar Country
    6/10 - ohGr - Tricks
    6/10 - NIN - Bad Witch
5/10 - A Perfect Circle - Eat The Elephant (I originally had this at a 2/10 when it first came out, but it's since grown on me)

Nothing else notable for me. I hated the new Pumpkins record (2/10).
AFI Still has a release on Dec 7th called "The Missing Man" and I really liked their last record, but they can be kind of hit or miss.

Rammstein's guitarist Richard Kruspe's solo project "Emigrate" has a new record out this week as well "A Million Degrees" Featuring a couple guests on some songs like Till Lindemann and Cardinal Copia/Tobias Forge (Ghost singer), so I'll check that out, but I have NEVER liked his stuff, so I'm not holding my breath for this being any good. Just excited to hear the collabs with Till and Tobias basically

The obsessive in me works on my yearly rankings all year round, largely for my own entertainment. I slave away on it all year, finalise it, post it on Facebook to nobody who cares, and then move on with my life. Every year. (For those interested, the app Checklist on Android is fucking great for editing rankings.)

This year I've listened to 45 new albums so far, and I still have a few more to catch up on. This is the most albums I've listened to in one year, so I'm going for a top 15 instead of a top 10. Whenever I think I've locked my top 15, something takes me by surprise and fucks it all up--Daughters being the perfect example. So, to be safe, here are my top 5 -- I don't see this changing:

    1. Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino
    2. Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
    3. SOPHIE - OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES
    4. Nine Inch Nails - Bad Witch
    5. Pusha T - DAYTONA

DAYTONA can be solely credited for getting me into hip-hop. Before this year I merely dabbled here and there, but this year I went all in. My foray into hip-hop is what I will remember 2018 for, no doubt in my mind.

Everything after these 5 seems to fluctuate. Still on the docket to listen to from this year are KEN mode - Loved (saw the album art for this and just had to give it look), Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD (the hip-hop odyssey continues), and Architects - Holy Hell (cheers @Deepvoid!)

I'll post my top 15 when I nail it down to a non-fluid list.

Kurt Vile - Bottle It In
    J Mascis - Elastic Days
    Stephen Malkmus - Sparkle Hard
    All brilliant albums

NIN - Bad Witch was meh. 2 great songs, 2 instrumentals and 2 songs ruined by Bowie impressions
Black Queen was also very meh. Loved their 1st album. 2nd record Greg sings in a high pitch falsetto 75% of the time which ruins it for me

But Vile, Malkmus and Mascis put out brilliant records. Indie rock going strong

Would have preferred a live album over a canned live set, honestly, but I'll take what I can get. Still filled with bangers.

Disappointed of the year--Smashing Pumpkins: Shiney and Oh So Bright. It's not awful, but it was disappointing. I listened again today, and am still sort of "meh" about most of it.

This is their live set just without the crowd sound. It's like a Peel Session. I have a recording of their Accorhotels performance and it's pretty much exact same thing minus the crowd noise. S U R V I V E did the same thing with RR7400. I actually prefer what Justice did with Woman Worldwide over another live album like A Cross The Universe and Access All Arenas. Woman Worldwide is almost like a greatest hits album but remixed.

I'm just salty because A Cross the Universe and Access All Arenas are two of my favourite live albums ever.

Good year for some super deluxe reissues. In addition to the Beatles White Album, I also really enjoyed the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley's 1968 comeback special. I'm already familiar with the original album and the stand up/sit down segments on disc, but never watched the actual special, and here it is in glorious blu-ray. It's seriously one of the best performances/concert specials I've ever seen and I can see why it revitalized his career.

Hendrix's deluxe Electric Ladyland is next on my list.
