    The Soft Moon

Since The Soft Moon joined the list of openers for Cold and Black and Infinite, thought I'd make a thread.

The Soft Moon is the project by writer, producer, instrumentalist Luis Vasquez. His fourth album, Criminal, came out this year and it's excellent, imho. There's definitely some NIN influence.

I love The Soft Moon! The music always reminds me of like, distilled Joy Division. Not the same band at all, but a very similar sonic palate.

Huge fan. Saw them a few months ago and was blown away. Between TSM, Cold Cave, and Drab Majesty, newer music has been getting goood lately.

With a list like that, check out Priest if you haven't already.

can't stand cold cave (find them inauthentic and lacking), but if you guys like drab majesty and soft moon, there are DOZENS of bands in this vein that have been making music for years and are just as good. just holler if you want a crash course.

I'm always interested in more cool post-punk/new wave bands, but you're crazy about Cold Cave.

having watched them ride the post-punk/synth revival wave all the way from emo/hardcore to sudden synth superstars (while not having a connection to this music), and not being crazy about their records at ALL has left a pretty bad taste in my mouth, especially as i'm involved with most of these bands/this sound, etc. no big if you like them, i just think they're phony.

    here's some goodies though:

Anyone seeing this run of shows (other than the Palladium dates)? I’m going to Portland tonight and can’t wait! My first TSM show, then the Palladium next week.

I will never understand the J&MC hate, but TSM put on an absolutely killer show in Portland tonight. Made me so fucking pumped for next weekend.

No hate for J&MC. I liked them and they play almost all of their most well known songs. It's just quite boring up there, and they don't switch it up at all from night to night. So I'd rather not see them again this tour.

Instrumental versions of Criminal and Deeper have been made available on bandcamp a few days ago. I guess now is a good time to check them out if you're interested, as all proceeds go directly to the artist today (May 1st).

PS: This thread still needs to be added to the Bands A-Z list.

The right way to flag a missing link is in a reply to the A-Z thread, or I might not see it. I’ve just added the soft moon. Thanks!

Wow that aesthetically looks VERY different

I've listened to the 6 songs that are available on Bandcamp and it seems to be all instrumental.

i'm confused, isn't he the sole member of the soft moon when in the studio?

this is why all my stuff is everson poe haha because it's always me and it feels weird to file things under different artists unless it's a wholly distinct project with other people.

I think it’s like when TR puts out something as TR rather than NIN, it doesn’t fit in his idea of Nin’s box

Yeah, it's advertised as 'bold reimagining of the soundtrack genre'.

I've seen it pop up on Bandcamp and was a little amused by the description. 'With this album, Vasquez felt the urgency to break away from The Soft Moon realm and deliver an even more intimate, self-reflecting body of work, while further unveiling inner demons & vulnerability.' That's almost identical to what the hype sticker of my Criminal CD says. Like he is soo introspective! And now he is getting even more introspective! I'm sure one day he will really get to know himself.

Jokes aside, I really liked Criminal and this one will also get a fair chance. I'm always interested in instrumental music to play during work.

The feature vocals came in unexpectedly. Needed some time to warm up with it, but in the end I think it works fine.

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread until now. Been a big fan for years, and have seen TSM several times. The new track is cool. Luis has yet to release an album I haven't enjoyed, so I preordered the signed version.

    Awful.

This one hits really hard. Rest easy, Luis.
