I agree that Tim Hunt should have been asked to resign. Imagine if he'd said those things about minorities. Also, he made it clear that it wasn't just a joke. There is a difference between one's personal, anecdotal feelings, and what it is acceptable to say in public. Shouldn't a scientist know this? And it's perhaps his sense of privilege and entitlement, aggrieved or otherwise, that blinded him to this spot. It's not hard to see why this generated and deserved such a backlash.
