    Your Favourite NINstrument

Do you have a favourite instrument or sound? Oddly I love hearing the tambourine but my favourite instrument would be modular synth/arp.

    Examples...

    • Electric Guitar
    • Bass
    • Piano
    • Electric Piano/Organ
    • Arpeggio
    • Modular Synth
    • Synth Strings
    • Synth Other (Ambient)
    • Luminist Garden
    • Xylophone
    • Cello
    • Live Drums
    • Drum Machine / Programmed
    • Tambourine
    • Drones/Blips/Beeps/Static

Very disappointed that you didn't title this thread "Your Favorite NINstrument", but I will recover. Anyway, for all of the toys that Trent and Atticus have at their disposal, there's still nothing better than Trent and a piano in my opinion.

I completely agree....Trent and a piano is perfection. Modular Synth would be my second place vote...followed by Electric Guitar in Third place.

Piano, drums and bass in La Mer

Drums in Eraser, The Collector and You Know What You Are?

    Bass in Suck

That twinkly arpeggiated synth part in All Time Low

The synth drone in The Day The World Went Away

The muted guitars in Help Me I Am in Hell

Synth bass and drums in Heresy

The glitchy guitar parts in The Warning, and all of the squelchy synths in Year Zero.

Ok for a more serious post:

The synth at the end of Happiness In Slavery
    The Brass Synths in Ruiner
The Synthbass in This Isn't The Place
A lot of The Fragile (the album)
Pino's live bass on the reworked Sanctified

If you listen to That's What I Get on a good enough stereo system (nothing crazy...I've been listening to that record since I was a teenager on your standard bedroom all in one stereo system), that electronic tapping sound that comes in at 2:38 will literally sound like it's happening in the room with you. I have always been struck by how jarringly real that has sounded. Amazing production and mastering.

There's no one sound or instrument that makes NIN great. It's a combination. But really, it's Trent that makes NIN what it is. You can't just drop a drum kit, a piano, a synth, and some guitars in a room and expect a NIN song.

I always enjoy the "creepy mandolin" and was happy to hear it on The Lovers.

I like those trebley unplugged sounding guitars on many NIN albums. Like on Eraser, Ripe, Big Comedown, Satellite. I think that was attributed to a piezo pickup on a parker guitar.... on the Fragile at least.

There's a criminal lack of marimba in this thread.

Also, the tambourine, of course, since Trent actually convinced me to go to a music store and buy a tambourine after I saw how badass he looked while playing it. I always found it odd that the tambourine in Piggy is almost always sampled, except for the "Ghosts Piggy" version (and TR played the marimba at the same time!).

-The fifteen sticks of virtual dynamite Trent stuffed into his Mac to create the closing section of The Great Destroyer

    -Trent's Ruiner guitar

    -Proper Fuck Placement

-Josh Eustis' bass on the 2013 EP version of Sanctified which has been scientifically proven to induce sexual arousal

    -Eraser bees

You know how when you're hearing a new Trent/NIN track and it's all dark and ambient then you hear the Piano and you're like "THAT'S MY FUCKING BOY RIGHT THERE!"

    That's my favorite.

I remember that Gibson had a line of "goth" black guitars for awhile in the late 90's, and I remember reading in one of the guitar magazines that described Trent playing an acoustic guitar in that style, even though I didn't ever see it in their advertisements. Always wondered if he kept that.
