a truly unique take on the genre: The Witch
This came out today (WHY NOT IN OCTOBER?!?!). Did anyone else see it yet?
I could not wait to see this & went by myself spur of the moment tonight. Theater wasn't too full as expected, and I don't think most of the audience knew what they were getting into (young, female, ethnic). Some people did not looked please when the lights came up.
I don't want to say too much about what goes on. An extremely religious Puritan family moves out near the woods and starts a small farm, and things begin from there. This is Robert Eggers first film, and if this level of detail is what he will bring us going forward, then we're in for some impressive stuff in the future. Eggers does SUCH a great job depicting with extreme accuracy the way of life in early 1600's Puritan/pilgrim New England. I don't think I've seen anything like it before.
This is a slow-build type of horror film. Eggers really builds an intense sense of dread that gets worse as the movie goes on. The atmosphere is intense and scary. You really don't know what's going to happen next. It drags a tiny bit at times and the audience snickered at the very accurate (and hard to understand) period dialogue style (but again...some of the audience clearly was expecting your standard scary movie), but the ending more than makes up for it. I felt it really delivered. SEE THIS MOVIE!

I liked it a lot.
The theater was PACKED in downtown NYC, and yeah you could tell it got a lot of datenight couples who immediately regretted their choice and heckled a bit, but you could also tell people were genuinely shocked and fully in the grip of the proceedings, so it was lively crowd, at least.
I wish it would've gone further at the end with a full-on gorefest of witches raiding the plantation or something like that, but I was MORE than pleased with what we got.
We're basically talking about a Terrance Malick witch-movie here so basically the ONLY way to be disappointed is to not have any idea about that.

One of the best Horror movies ever. The next in a lineage with the Shining, and Rosemary's Baby. I don't make those comparisons lightly or frivolously. The cinematography, the film language, the acting, this movie is on top of it and has an amazing ending to boot.
It's like Mallick did Rosemary's Baby its fucking genius.

Glad to hear good things. I had no idea this was a thing to I talked to a new friend about horror movies a couple weeks ago. I never was much of a fan of the whole gore porn thing a few years back.

Haha...wasn't EVEN trying to spoil anything for anyone so sorry if I did. But still, yet again, gfy.
Anyway, I RedBoxed the BD of this and it has a shit-ton of bonus features! Well, for a rental edition, at least. Director's commentary, a "making of" featurette, and a great panel discussion at the premiere in Salem. Anyone who's interested and has a few hours to kill should check it out, it's quite the bargain and a HELL of a good movie before you even get to all the rest.
Man, I am SO in love with this movie. And Anya Taylor-Joy is an absolute REVELATION. Mmm. MOAR, PLZ. Fucking CANNOT get enough.
Pretty excited to hear she's probably being cast as Illyana Rasputin in the upcoming New Mutants movie. That's some pretty fucking inspired albeit blatantly obvious casting. OMFG she is going to KILL IT.

I finally got to see this again after its premiere because I was BORED OUT OF MY MIND in rural, upstate NY and walked FIVE MILES to RedBox it with a bunch of other movies to pass the time. Didn't realize my pal had planned to take me to my first renaissance fair in the morning, though!
This movie just keeps getting MORE AND MORE contextually appropriate, lol.
So I just took a bunch of her son's expired, old Adderall to stay up and power through the bonus features so I don't have to return it unfinished, since we'll be gone all day tomorrow. I'm roughly halfway through the director's commentary track right now and OMFG he literally just referenced a Terrance Malick movie during the dying dog scene and explains that he learned the live-dog/fake-guts bit from the timeless classic Days of Heaven. Fucking CALLED IT, man!
Back to THIS movie, though. Can we just talk about the symbolism for a minute?
Eggers openly acknowledges that he didn't MEAN to make a feminist manifesto, it just kinda came out that way as a natural byproduct of the subject matter. But still.
The whole movie centers around a young girl who gets her first period, was about to be sold off for a dowry, loses her mother's youngest baby to a milk-churning witch, squeezes blood from an udder, and then finally winds up naked and drenched in blood as she asserts herself and her burgeoning womanhood to adopt her fate.
All of which culminates at the end of the movie, capped off by THIS little chestnut.
"Period sources," lol.
Intentional or not, that is FUCKING AWESOME.
