That's the problem with these open voting systems, it's just a popularity content at the end of the day. Which ever artist has the most fans (some of which are more willing to actually vote then others) is going to get in, regardless of whether or not they actually deserve to (not that any of these artists don't)
NIN will always be at a disadvantage as, as respected and liked as they are, they are always going to be pitted against "bigger" more well known artists who regulars voters are going to give the second or third votes too.

I think last year a bunch of Todd Rundgren fans must have had a campaign because he was initially pretty low in the list and then got up within the first few. But really, this is all optics. This final fan ballot will only count for one ballot of the 1000+ other ballots; from my understanding every prior inducted act gets to vote so the number of total ballots significantly increases every year even.

The good news is that the fan vote is a very small percentage of the decision. The first time NIN was nominated, they won the fan vote, and we know how it turned out overall.

I'm not sure that they did, if it was the year Stevie Ray Vaughan got in. They were the big two in the poll but I think SRV wound up winning it, and did get in that year. As someone said, it's optics and I am almost positive every year they've had the fan poll whoever went on top won.

I believe Pat Benatar has the lead on the poll.

She does have the lead by a significant margin, and she honestly deserves to get in as well IMO. It's not that I think that her sound was anything groundbreaking, but she as a cultural phenomenon kind of was. She was among the first sort of tough rock-chicks to get any sort of mainstream adoration. Looking at my mom's yearbook is crazy, because EVERY GIRL in that book is dressed like an extra from the "Love is a Battlefield" video.

She also has a great voice and has written some classic songs that have stood the test of time. We wouldn't have had a LOT of the most popular female rock and pop musicians without her paving the way first.

My preference would be for her, Trent, Kraftwerk, MC5 and Depeche Mode to get in this year. Biggie deserves it but maybe not yet when stacked up against all the others in there at the moment. Same with Soundgarden.

But honestly it's a hard year competition-wise, and I'm kind of shocked that Whitney and Judas Priest aren't already in there because I thought they both were.

The Doobie Brothers not being in yet is just shocking at this point. My point has always been that somewhere in America right now a song of theirs is on the radio. Major crossover appeal from pop stations to appearing on Carson (and the first band to be on a sitcom for Christ's sake), and pop culture cache beyond.

Discussing NIN with the wife on a road trip today. Mentioned the HOF nomination and asked her who she thought should induct TR/NIN. Her answer? Lil Nas X. I LOL'd, but not so sure she was kidding. She can be cruel like that.

Here's a name I'd like to throw out to induct Trent, Hans Zimmer. I've read a few interviews with him going back to the early 2000's where he said he was a NIN fan, possibly through the work he did on The Fan which features a lot of the remixes, etc.

If they are going to induct a big time band like NIN, they aren't going to get some obscure composer nobody has ever heard of. Thats like saying Dave Ogilvie should induct him....Here is who should induct NIN

    1. Robert Smith.....Fits perfectly with Trent inducting Robert, so Robert can return the favor. Both are huge fans of eachothers work.
    2. Dave Gahan.....Both are huge fans of eachothers work and both bands are basically intertwined
    3. Dave Grohl.....They are friends and Dave is a great speaker
    Wild Cards
    4. Al Jourgensen.....It would make sense but Al would probably say something stupid and deep down it would probably aggravate him to induct NIN because I still think he has a seething jealousy over Trent's success
    5. Marilyn Manson.....If he had his shit together, he would make a great speech but at this point he would probably fall off the stage or nod out mid speech
    6. Ice Cube.....Cube has always been a fan of NIN and Trent is a fan of Cube...Would switch things up to have a rapper induct a "rock" band.....
    7. Gary Numan.....Too obvious but Numan might not be "mainstream" enough for the HOF. Plus who knows how he would do making a speech in front of millions
    8. Tori Amos/Courtney Love......Just because
    9. Dave Navarro.....they are friends and peers and as much as I can't stand him, Dave is a good speaker....But he may be at a porn convention that weekend or trolling social media for 18 year old trim, so he may not be able to attend
    10. Dr. Dre.....Obv they both respect eachothers work and know eachother through Apple...but Dre hates public speaking and most likely would refuse it even if they offered it
    11. Maynard James Keenan......MJK would troll everyone during the speech but still....It would be glorious

After the obvious ones, you are left with musicians who are fan boys that Trent could probably give a shit about (Jonathan Davis, Corey Taylor, Billy Corgan)

    ... are they?

This is coming from someone who has maybe heard one Depeche Mode song, and it was a cover version of said song.

So I asked him, who would he want to induct him in 2020 if NIN do get in? His answer is a poignant one. "Well I sure wish it could've been David Bowie,"
Anyone else get a little choked up reading this part?

I think Gary Numan would make the most sense. And he is definitely mainstream - is there a person alive who hasn't heard "Cars"?

What makes the most sense given how this usually goes, is someone more contemporary who holds up him as a major influence.

Bowie would have been great (he wrote a nice tribute in Rolling Stone, where he talked about Lou Reed being gifted a version of Metal Machine Music remixed by Trent), but if he were alive he probably wouldn't do it. He wasn't arsed to attend his own induction, so maybe he held the whole thing in little regard.

Total left field option: Justin Timberlake

He's still a relatively big deal.

He was in The Social Network.

He's a fan: “Every time they put something out for us to enjoy it changes what we think and how we listen to music. I often find myself to be in awe of them. I think what he does is beyond talent, it’s a gift."

And most importantly, after the speech, Maynard can join NIN and Justin onstage for a stirring rendition of Even Closer.

Ha. Obscure. Probably the second most famous film active composer after John Williams.

Its the rock n roll hall of fame bro...This isn't the Oscars....They want a sexy name to induct NIN, specifically a well known musician or actor, not the guy who did the score for Lion King

Chris Cornell did Heart. Green Day did Guns N Roses. Chris Rock did the Chili Peppers. Chuck D and LL Cool J did the Beastie Boys. Neil Young did Tom Waits. Eddie Vedder did the Ramones. Flea did Metallica. Eminem did Run DMC. Lou Reed did Leonard Cohen. Justin Timberlake inducted Madonna. Tom Hanks did Dave Clark 5. Metallica did Black Sabbath. You get the picture

He's more well-known than you might be giving him credit for. He went on tour with his music with a full, expensive production and sold out arenas everywhere that many of the same acts you mentioned also played. He even played Coachella and got a good deal of press out of it too.

While you make a good point about who they have brought on in the past to do it, I think they like the diversity of bringing in someone not necessarily associated with rock music to do it. Hans is the closest guy in the film score world I can think of who they (meaning the HOF itself) wouldn't balk at bringing in, for the reasons I just mentioned. Plus Hans is as much a nut about synths as Trent is, and started out playing electronics in not just movies but pop and rock music as well (he's a credited musician on "Video Killed The Radio Star").

Whoever inducts NIN has to do it from sitting in the sexual torture/murder/meatgrinder chair from the HIS video. Amirite? So it has to be someone both kind of famous and also disposable

Looking at this year's poll... and the previous one... and the one before it... it looks like NIN ain't getting indicted any time soon anyway.

I'm confident it will be their year. All the HOF will care about concerning the poll is who comes out on top, not the rankings as it were.

If you had said Hans Zimmer wasn't an appropriate presenter, you'd have an argument, but you didn't. You said he was "some obscure composer nobody has ever heard of." Dude has been on a world arena tour for like three years now.

I wonder: does the HOF ask the artist who they would like to induct them? Or do they make that call as an organization?

Mileage varies I would imagine, but I suspect the artist would have the final say. I imagine the HOF would want to keep it limited to people with any varying level of fame themselves to keep it interesting for television.

If non-musicians have done the inductions, then maybe David Lynch?
