Yeah, I guess right at the moment Coldplay are the biggest band on earth(TM). And they've been this since U2's No Line on the Horizon sort of flopped. I actually like two of the three singles of the new album so far.

her cover of jolene is breathtaking. i would honestly feel better if her voice was terrible, but when she really sings, her voice is AMAZING. and that kills me. because instead of making good music, she makes bullshit that i can't stand. ARGH.

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I couldn't understand him through most of the verses. Terrible.

someone posted this a while ago in a different thread (as a positive example of a NIN cover).

while i do like Hardcore (stuff like converge), i don't think these guys do it very well, and TPD definitely does not lend itself to being covered in that genre...so, yeah, i agree that they need to stop.

OMG don't get me started on Babymetal. Soooo much interesting music happening in Japan, and these guys get coverage and success?
They are bullshit. Cynically put-together, they are just a label invention: they are like the worst aspects of j-pop and metal all in one shitty package.
"None of the three members knew what metal music was before the inception of the band" (from their wikipedia page). Of course they didn't.

I can't tell the difference between Rise Against and Against Me!

    Both anonymous emo punk.

rise against = generic emo punk

against me = originally anarchist acoustic punk...now electric, less anarchist, still totally awesome. fronted by laura jane grace (formerly tom gabel), who has become an awesome role model for us trans folks, especially trans punks who don't care about conforming to stereotypical gender roles. i love her so much and i would give pretty much anything just to hang out and talk to her. even if you don't like the music, you have to admire her as a person.

Someone played some Against Me for me the other day, and while it's not entirely the kind of music that I really go for, I had nothing bad to say.

Rise Against is something completely different right? They're that watered down Bad Religion regurgitation?

I think Against Me! are the most overrated band of the past decade. I never liked them and found them generally boring and uninteresting, and now all of the sudden people think they're good? What happened? I still think they're bland and there's better accessible punk music out there. People act like Against Me! are some game changing band who are original and buzzworthy, and they are so boring.

Let me rephrase that: with a couple of exceptions, every KISS song I've ever heard is crappy as fuck.

    Ah, that's better.
They have some pop gems: I Was Made For Loving You, Love Gun...
...and even the cheesy shit (Rock'n'Roll All Night, Hard Luck Woman etc) works in the context of their show, which I was pleasantly surprised to find very enjoyable when I saw them at Madison Sq Garden several years ago.

Also: Melvins' cover of "Goin' Blind" is awesome.

Yeah, regarding the covers: that's when you find that the songs are good wether you like or hate the band, even Maynard and Tom Morello did an awesome cover of "Calling Dr Love":

I think KISS are an unloved band that deserve some respect for their music (their image it's a different thing but i do believe they are good musicians)
They did recorded some crap during the 80's, but as you said they have tons of gems. Sadly the current line up is crap and both "Monster" and "Sonic Boom" ARE shit...
