    Steven Wilson on Pale Communion

The new Opeth album Pale Communion was mixed into stereo and 5.1 at my studio in February. I also sang harmony vocals. It’s by no stretch of the imagination a metal record but it’s still plenty heavy and a great piece of work - for me the epic orchestrated ballad “Faith in Others” that closes the album is Mikael Åkerfeldt's finest achievement to date. Pale Communion is released by Roadrunner Records on 19th June. It’s also the first Opeth album to be recorded and mixed in higher resolution 96/24. I hope Roadrunner will release a high res format, but I don't know their plans on that.

For Record Store day, the band is issuing a vinyl release of Watershed.

    Looks badass.

So this has been the label's response to any further information on the new album...

Yeah, a lot of pissed off folks are are taking to Roadrunner's facebook page this morning. That whole ordeal has turned into a fiasco for the Roadrunner FB and PR people. No announcement or update is just unprofessional. A simple "release is delayed, more news to come" isn't so difficult to post. Sure, folks will be disappointed, but delays happen and needing extra time is not uncommon to resolve issues. But to let a scheduled date come and go without any information whatsoever just creates a shitstorm.

Makes sense of this fiasco a bit. Hopefully it's still coming out next month, will be bummed if I have to wait until August for it.

I'm so beyond excited for this album. I'm especially excited for the Damnation mixed with Ghost Reveries comparisons it got in that Metal Injection review. I was just so-so on the last album even while I defend the direction and agree with Mike's assertions that metal these days is boring. I really am expecting some the best material I've ever heard from them.

If you check the Opeth reddit, Cusp of Eternity is there. Pretty awesome!

the new song sounds great, but the actual musical content is pretty... eh. i suspect the rest of the record will make it make more sense to me. the intro is fantastic though, a nice Opethian turn on the delayed guitar groove.

and yeah, the cover art is an Opethian turn on ELP for sure. it's beautiful though. will look a lot nicer in 12x12 than Heritage's cover.

Per the previews from the listening sessions, the second track and single Cusp of Eternity was said to be the most straightforward or "simplistic" rock song on the album. I must say it doesn't sound all that simple. I mean, sure, the guitar riffing in the main verses is pretty basic, but the change up towards the end and that beastly guitar solo is great. Also, holy hell can you hear the Ritchie Blackmore/Rainbow influence. The biggest suck here is the damnable two month wait for the rest of the album to drop.

Here's a higher resolution image of the album cover:

I have to say I wasn't really engaged with the song, but it's very possible that I'm just looking forward to the album as a whole too much to just be engaged with one piece of it now.

I despise how the guitar and drums intentionally don't fit together right in the verse. Otherwise I dig the song a lot.

I have been a fan of Opeth since Blackwater Park and I love how they have evolved into this prog giant and left the metal behind for the most part. (Like Mastodon) I can still dig some old metal for nostalgia reasons but I'm glad to that bands like this have matured almost the same as my taste has.

Didn't care much for that first song but this other one is great! So much going on, and such a unique sound.

It's very good. Much better than Heritage, which I like very much.
