Texas court sends illegal voting case of Crystal Mason back for review

A small bright spot in the usual flood of darkness coming out of Texas.
On May 11 the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals sent the case of a Black woman who was convicted in State court of illegal voting back to a lower court for further evaluation. Crystal Mason faces five years in prison for submitting a provisional ballot that was never counted.

In the ruling the court said the State had to show that Mason actually realized she was ineligible to vote when she submitted the ballot in the November 2016 election. It sent the case back to the lower court to decide that issue.

Standard procedure here these days. Wave your hands, scream, and do some stuff that you know will get shot down in the courts but you get credit full credit from your base and they never hear a word about the court shooting it down.

'I mean Ukraine!': George W. Bush condemns invasion of Iraq in brutal gaffe
"The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia, and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq," said the former U.S president who was responsible for invading Iraq in 2003.

"...I mean of Ukraine," Bush followed up, correcting himself. Ouch.
Oh come on, don't tease us like that. you know you meant the first one.

That pig should have been tried & executed in int'l court for war crimes like practically every other US prez over the past 60 years. Disgusting. This Freudian slip will be a frequently used clip when discussing his legacy long after he's gone.

Oh, and hats off to the Dems, and Obama's specifically, for rehabbing his public image in the years after his horrific time in office. Yes he's responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands if not millions, but he gave Michelle a candy once so all is forgiven.

    FUCK YOU

The ex president who shall not be named makes Bush 2 look like he's worthy of Mt. Rushmore. Pretty sad. PT Barnum should've run for president as he's the true father of the country.

    OK, two things.

    1) don't tease like that!
    2) oh wait it's her, so probably an alternative fact.

Canadian national security task force is preparing for the collapse of the United States

"Its democratic institutions have suffered erosion, as reflected in partisan pressure on the electoral process, bias and dysfunction in the criminal justice system, harmful policies on immigration and asylum seekers, and growing disparities in wealth, economic opportunity, and political influence," the site said.

The watchdog group said that the U.S. slipped 11 points in the past ten years. The U.S. is now ranked below Argentina and Mongolia.

Yeah, our entire income is from the government so this wouldn’t be good.

Texas state bar sues Ken Paxton, alleges professional misconduct for trying to void Biden election

The State Bar of Texas sued embattled Attorney General Ken Paxton on Wednesday, claiming he committed professional misconduct when he tried to void the 2020 election of President Joe Biden by suing to overturn his wins in four states.

The Commission for Lawyer Discipline says it sued Paxton in Collin County after receiving five separate disciplinary complaints against him between December 2020 and July 2021. The complaints came after Paxton asked the U.S. Supreme Court to enjoin Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin for allegedly breaking federal election laws when they each implemented voting changes during the Covid-19 pandemic without the approval of state legislators. The conservative-majority high court dismissed Paxton’s lawsuit 7-2 within days, concluding Texas lacks standing.
I can't wait for Abbott to pass the law saying they can't do this.

i grew up in a small town in southern idaho. yesterday i went to a pride festival in twin falls (between boise and salt lake) and it was amazing. the city was warm and welcoming and everyone had a good time. this happened in the panhandle, hundreds of miles away. but it's still terrifying.

i am so glad this bullshit was thwarted, but, damn, for every step forward ...

Those types of laws aren’t felonies.

Murder and sexual assault and sex trafficking and drug dealing are the types of crimes that are felonies.

This will cost that guy a LOT of money in fines and attorney’s fees.

”Do people really get their homes raided and arrested in front of their children over a misdemeanor?”
Four Federal Class A misdemeanors linked to a seditious conspiracy?

    You bet your ass.

In federal court, a misdemeanor is a criminal offense carrying no more than one year’s imprisonment.

of 31, only TWO were actually from idaho. and not even from coeur'd alene. they all traveled across state lines, most from other time zones. that's being overlooked and it makes me angry.

yeah, @kel, I saw a tweet earlier that showed the city/state origin of each of these people, and maybe it's just the prevailing politics and the large land mass/population, but seemed like 50% or so of them came from Texas.

EDIT: Looking into it more, and duh, the hate group is based in Texas, so it would make sense that's where the majority of the people came from.
But why go to Idaho? Why not disrupt a pride event in Texas instead?

I guess anything is possible, and I can't claim to know the minds of these people. Though, when I was looking around for this, I was googling stuff like "extremist group" w/ "Idaho" and the initial responses were articles talking about an alt-right / extremist / nationalist movement growing specifically in Idaho, with one person referring to it as "the south of the north," like in this article from 2020. I'd never heard this stuff, but I live under a rock in some ways.

I worked with James whatever. He’s a short body builder type. Was there maybe month as a food runner in our store/restaurant thing we got going on, no server’s. The trope of the polite, quiet ones continues… He even came in a couple times on his day off with what I assumed was his kid. Always had that smile. In retrospect I should have picked up on his weirdness. I guess I did but being, in my mind, a restaurant environment, I didn’t think about it much. I woke up to texts from people in my department about it this morning. Shits wild.

When I was dating my wife we had to drive through Idaho to get to her parents house. I was severely creeped out that the playgrounds you could see from I84 had siege towers, like little forts you could play on with a mounted (fake) machine gun on top.

Idaho and Oregon have a very sordid history when it comes to these things.

Oregon was America’s first and only state to begin as 'whites-only'

A racist history shows why Oregon is still so white

These laws were rarely enforced but they did the job they were created to do: establish Oregon as a majority white state. And it's why Portland, the state's most populous city, is still known as the whitest big city in the United States.
Although the laws were repealed almost a century ago, the racist language in Oregon's constitution wasn't removed by voters until 2002. But, Imarisha said, it's important to note — just 18 years ago — 30% of voters elected to keep the racist clause in the constitution.
    This is from 2020
ROAD TRIPPING WHILE BLACK IN OREGON
Even Oregon, coined one of the most progressive states, upheld such racist ideals, with laws that prohibited Black people from living or even entering the state. As recently as 2002, the Oregon Constitution stated that “no free Negro, or mulatto … shall come, reside, or be within this State, or hold any real estate.” Oregon’s current population is about 2% Black, mostly concentrated in Portland. So skepticism from Black road-trippers through Oregon is valid.
However, as a Black woman living and working in Oregon, I have found incredible road-trip gems throughout the state that are comfortable and welcoming to BIPOC travelers. See my road-trip tips for Black travelers, including basic safety measures like avoiding empty gas stations and driving late at night, research the area, and carry a physical map or itinerary of where you’re going. And another big tip: support BIPOC businesses whenever you go.

The same group that exposed Madison C playfully facefucking his cousin just posted that Lauren Boebert has worked as an escort and had two abortions.

I'm not surprised to be honest. I don't think sex work or abortions are morally wrong, but Republican accusations are usually admissions of guilt lol.

No shame for being a sex worker and getting an abortion, but yeah, when your whole thing is rallying against that stuff, it's usually because you're either woefully misinformed or you have experience with it. That's why you sometimes see anti-LGBTQ+ politicians getting caught in the act at shady motels. They think if they make enough noise that it'll act as a smokescreen for their own repressed feelings.

i'm 41, drive 84 often, and i've never seen anything like that. i remember steering wheel things at the top of these jungle gyms, like pretending you're navigating a boat or whatever. and every stretch of 84 is real far from such structures, so i dunno.

didn't know that about oregon's history. that's bizarre. i lived in big-city oregon (portland) and my partner is an art professor at eou in la grande (very small), and you wouldn't know at all. it's exactly as liberal as you would think. wow.

Crazy how Lindsey Graham has gotten away with this for so long. But to your poibt, he hasn't angered the wrong people on his side of the aisle, so his woefully obvious secret remains in the dark. His aggressive warhawk stance has helped him garner enough favor too.
