    Twitter

I really don't think there was ever a Twitter thread before, and I've often wondered if most of ETS preferred Twitter over Facebook. I've given it a try several times before, and I like how I can follow famous people on Twitter, along with my favorite brands and franchises when it comes to food, drinks, clothing, etc. (As well as all the other things I can also follow on Facebook.)

For anybody that is on ETS and Twitter, but still didn't follow ETS yet, this is the ETS account on Twitter. I also thought I'd post The NIN Hotline's Twitter account as well.

I also don't tweet much as I use it more as a news/comedy source. I'll retweet here and there and maybe tweet here and there.

I signed up for Twitter a while back, and almost never have used it.
Every time I am herded to some Twitter conversation the whole thing looks like an unreadable mess.
Also, no-one, not one person has ever been able to give me a sensible answer to the question "who will see my tweets?": in my feed I get tweets from people I follow, but also a bunch of random stuff from people I don't follow.
So: where will my tweet end up? I'd like to know this before posting.

I'm on Twitter about ten times the amount I'm on Facebook..it's cleaner, and from an article I read...Facebook is bleeding subscribers under the age of 25 to it (which is probably why they implemented hashtags and now even 'trending topics' in a blatant ripoff).

As for where your tweet ends up...

    1. If you just say something or mention a topic, anyone can see it (unless you set your account to 'private' meaning only your followers)...if blocked, then only they can see them, period. Twitter has a search function at the top so if you mention something about, let's say...a famous person...and I search for it...somewhere in the searches I'll see yours. Keep in mind, it's probably among THOUSANDS of others if it's a hot topic, etc.

    2. If you start your tweet with a handle, i.e. "@octobermidnight I think you're swell" Then I'll see it of course since I was mentioned...but your followers...it won't show up on their timeline (since the idea is you were talking TO ME). Again, keep in mind...unless you're set to private, if someone say...searched for 'octobermidnight' or something else in your tweet...it's out there to see, but who's gonna search up my handle kinda thing. Probably nobody. If you said '@octobermidnight Have you seen the new Batman movie?' and someone searches Batman...well that'll show up and obviously more a chance someone would find it in a search...but again...if I search 'Batman' I'm gonna get a billion search results from people everywhere...nothing out of the ordinary or worth reading.

    3. Follow up to the last point, let's say we BOTH follow the same person...Trent Reznor. If you tweet '@trent_reznor I enjoy your ass.' and I follow the person as well, then it WILL show up in my timeline as well...since we both follow the same person. So if I tweet to someone you follow as well, you see it (because if you followed me, you'd see it...and you follow the 3rd person...so again you see it.) If I tweet to my friend, even though you may follow me, again you wouldn't...unless you followed my friend as well. If that makes sense.

    4. The workaround is to put a period before the @ symbol. Then everyone sees it...it makes it like my first point...a basic tweet, searchable by anyone, seen by all your followers, regardless of whether or not they follow the same person. So, let's say again you follow me. I tweet to someone you don't follow? You won't see it. '@cooldude I don't like your shoes, sorry.' You don't follow @cooldude, so you won't see it. If I put the period though.. '.@cooldude I don't like your shoes, sorry.' Then all my followers WOULD see it.

Kinda confusing I know, but it makes sense after you use it for a while. There's also 'promoted tweets'...meaning like ads, people can pay to have their shit seen by people that don't even follow them. Bullshit I know, but think of it like this. The more followers you have OR the more people that can see your tweets, the bigger audience you have. Usually they have links in them to go to some website for more traffic...that's why people pay for it. Simple enough. As for privacy if you're concerned...like I said, you can set your acct to private so the only people that see your tweets are those that you WANT to see them, period. And there's a direct messaging system too which is obviously private...but you can only send messages back and forth to people that follow you.

That's the best thing to do...like Facebook, my Twitter feed consists almost solely of accounts associated with bands, movies, shows, video games, companies, sports teams, celebrities, etc. Very few just plain people...kinda like my FB (which I probably check once a day if not twice), family, friends, but other than that...no actual people in my feed (still friends, just made it so they only appear in the ticker on the right).

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I just hate the new Twitter update on mobile because now I can't look at my Twitter in public since pictures show up on my feed.

Haha what i love about this which falls within the same mechanic is when you follow 5 celebrities or what have you and they all seem to follow each other and all of a sudden you see them having a party in your twitter feed, so much hilarity can ensue.

I love twitter, its a far more 'social' network where you can actually make friends, rather than just stay in touch with existing ones. I like to follow a mix of peers, interesting people who share similar tastes, interesting people who don't, comedians etc.. It's nice.

I babble and tweet from here: alone_music

I could only find it on the web, but if you go to settings & uncheck "Do not inform me before showing media that may be sensitive" you'll have to click View on anything that the sender has marked as sensitive.

Not that I follow anybody who would be tweeting out pictures that I wouldn't want automatically shown on my screen at work...

I forgot to put up botley's Twitter account, and should've, especially for what he said here.

@botley - And well, I thought that you might've liked to have your Twitter account plugged here too.

So how about that new nav bar?

They also brought header pics in to the user module next to your feed, enlarged the text in certain spots, tweet composition field looks a little different too.

Only thing i don't like is they put the Retweet distinguishment in the feed on top of tweets instead of at the bottom.

It's not so popular here in Finland yet. We're more a facebook country. I'm slowly but surely trying to get into it.

It still occurred to me that if Twitter allowed a lot more characters, it would probably be the closest thing to a social media site that's sort of like a general forum altogether. It's always reminded me of forums that use conversation threading.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conversation_threading

I've also been on and off Twitter, but I still lurk on it for the most part. As for some of the slight changes, I suppose I'm getting used to them, but I sometimes miss the way it was last year.

I was just wondering if most of you prefer to protect your tweets or not. It seems like most people prefer not to, and I just wanted to see what others would have to say about that. As for me, I think I'll actually leave them unprotected this time around, even if I still happen to lurk on Twitter most of the time.

I think it's stupid to have them protected, if you just want to have convos with your personal friends, just text them. Unless you want to be hidden from embarrassment, or don't want people to know who you really are (which is weird). I tweet all the time, literally the dumbest, random shit you would ever read, and I have a blast. Having said that, I don't have anything personal linked to my twitter, so I am basically anonymous. But I think it's weird to have it be the other way around. Follow me @ 3digitwiz, but you'll never get the time back you waste reading my lame posts

I'd never protect my tweets... it messes with most of the interactable social nature of the site because then you can't participate in hashtags, can't be retweeted and i don't think you can be favorited either. Also I'm not sure but i don't think people like celebrities can reply to your sent tweets if they're not following you either? or they wouldn't be able to see them anyways i dunno. Just recently I've had Danny Trejo respond to me, Olga Kurylenko favorited a tweet, Hugh Dillon (from Flashpoint, The Killing, Continuum) rt'd and favorited something from me. Bex Taylor-Klaus (Sin from Arrow) always favorites my stuff.

Yet lock your profile down and none of that cool stuff will happen. What's the point?

I kept thinking about it, and I finally made an ETS counterpart for Twitter. I'll mostly lurk though, as I've already figured that I've talked more than enough on ETS. And well, I just thought I'd use it to follow other ETS members off ETS, and just for fun in general.

Took a break from Twitter for a few days. I deactivated my account. I kept the app on my phone though. It was scary how I would instinctively open the app.

I made a new account today. But my god, Twitter is terrible. You really notice how bad it is after a break. It is toxic.
