I'm sure I mentioned this before. I'll also admit that it proves that the word let still makes it far more menacing, intimidating and flat-out scathing.

It's also far better emphasis on the overall vulnerability, failure and hopelessness unleashed by Mr Self Destruct when let is compared to the word made in this case.

    Mr Self Destruct

Actual: "You let me do this to you."

What I keep hearing: "You made me do this to you."

Was just listening to "The Wretched" tonight and it occurred to me that to the unseasoned listener it could sound like he's saying, "the clouds will fart and the sky cracks open..."

I keep hearing "we keep picking while the skin turns black" as "we keep necking while the skin turns black" in She's Gone Away, which is somehow MORE disturbing to me.

You've got a mishearing inside of a mishearing here. It's actually "We keep licking while the skin turns black."

Better than me. I always heard that as "We can't recogni[ze] the skin turns black"

Why are people posting lyrics of songs NIN has covered? I legitimately thought this thread was for songs Trent wrote.

This is a fun thread, not a serious thread.

There IS alot of Alternative version of songs SERIOUSLY.

Live performances usually have changes especially when with someone else.

I still remember watching the BDO (Big Day Out) in Australia live Performance.

    "I'm okay, I'm on Crack"

"I want it all, just to stay on track"

I get that, but it’s Misheard NIN Lyrics. Bringing in covers just seems like a deviation from the topic to me. I’m not trying to spoil the fun, I’m just confused. I can understand bringing in “Suck” (despite it being a cover) because Trent wrote the lyrics for it, but I saw “I’m Afraid of Americans” earlier and was like, “Uhhh...” Maybe I’m just taking the title too literally. Carry on.

How about: Misheard lyrics in a song performed by NIN?

It’s not about the actual lyrics or who wrote them; it’s about the listener of a performance of a song and said listener’s misconception about what they heard.

If this was a Literary thread interpreting lyrics, I’d be right with ya. But this ain’t about that.

When people create a thread about misheard lyrics of any song, the WRITER of those lyrics is never relevant; because the listener just RE-WROTE the lyrics by mishearing them.

Slight drift: Performances of songs often deviate from the original lyrics, too; so the cover isn’t reliable and the listener isn’t sure WHAT the fuck they heard.

    Exhibit A:

    Drift = Off

    Happiness In Slavery

Actual: "He's being beat into submission."

What I keep hearing: "He's been beaten into submission."

    Somewhat Damaged

Actual: "So impressed with all you do."/Flew too high and burnt the wing."/"Tear a hole exquisite red."

What I keep on hearing: "So embossed in all you do"./Flew too high and burnt a wing."/"Tear a hole exquisite rage."

Sometimes I hear lyrics where there aren't any. In "My Violent Heart," I always thought the weird loop at 0:39 was a whispered voice saying "fully functional", while, in "Head Down", the synth part at 3:29 sounded to me like Trent singing "none of you..." in falsetto.

    Meet Your Master

I kept hearing: "Goddamn Julian" instead of "Count down to the end".

Until I read the lyrics I thought he was referencing a character from the ARG story, which seemed odd because he doesn't do that in any of the other songs. Turns out he hadn't in this song either.

And I said, "I mean, maybe it's not so bad," and had planned to continue a defense of the line when she cut in and said, "Are you fucking kidding me? 'It's not as much fun to pick up the pizza'‽ Real badass, there, Trenty-boy. Maybe the next song will be about how delivery is much cooler."
    Fucking hell!

The lyrics of "Letting You" were not meant as a literal set of instructions for the 2020 U.S. Election. We regret any confusion or apocalyptic outcome this may have caused.
