Almost started this thread myself a day ago. Thanks for this. Hail Ryan.

    IWFY:

See I keep lying to myself
See I could die into myself

Surely I kept thinking to myself: "What the fuck does that even mean? Oh well. Trent's gonna Trent."

I heard something similar on my first listen, except I heard "See, I could die and kill myself."

When YZ first came out, even though I knew it wasn't what he was saying, on Meet Your Master when he says "Count down to the end" I just heard "Downtown Julianne." Which, to me, sounds like the nickname of a prostitute in the 70s.

When Closer was the new song on the block I told my cousin that the line "You can have my isolation" was "You can have my masturbation" simply to see him swear that I was wrong and try his hardest to convince me that it was indeed isolation. I'm surprised he took the bait every single time, since when we got the album we both sat down and followed along with the lyrics in the booklet.

Last - This isn't built to last! This is for right now! (That actually doesn't sound bad to me at all.)

lol!! that is what i thought it was too. had no idea, until right now, that is "so very high".

running: "i couldn't seem to make him say" is apparently "i couldn't seem to make him stay".

Down In It: long ago, I used to hear the line "I WAS UP ABOVE IT!" as "*something* *something* BULLET!" I just phonetically sang along to whatever came before "bullet".

Meet Your Master (in the end) : "Hey, show me around the bend ! " (it repeats, I don't know the right lyrics).
Copy of A : " Bended with a punk ass/A punk ass that's become quite clear today "
EIETS : " Can't remember how this got stallin' "

The best ones I have ever read/heard about are "What have I become, my Swedish friend?" and "This isn't mental ass, this is for right now." I wish Trent would release NIN t-shirts that said stuff like "My Swedish friend" and "Mental Ass!" on them. I would be so happy.

There is also a part of Last in the background chorus that sounds like: Goddamn slut! (Not that it is!)

I had to correct a friend of mine with this issue quite some time ago.

-- on singing Wish over the jukebox: "We're sharing something real; we're sharing something true"

Speaking of THTF, I always hear "You're keeping in step, In the line" as "You're keeping in step, and in line."

    Win!

    Head like a hole
    Black-edged saw

is how I heard the HLAH chorus for years. Picturing a chainsaw with dried bloodstains on its blade.

    Also,

Kinda like the fire I was up way up in the sky

from Down In It. I thought it was a reference to that alien abduction movie Fire in the Sky (although it was only a book back in the late 80's).

Just remembered, back in the early days of PHM I always heard "Got money, I'll do anything for you" on HLAH.

Now that is just fabulous, best misheard lyric ever. I'm now imagining Count Trentula from The Perfect Drug video fighting a dragon to win back his lady-love, or maybe like his niece or whoever she's supposed to be.

Best I can offer is the first part of the chorus of Survivalism: instead of

I got my propaganda I got revisionism I got my violence in high def ultra-realism

    I always hear:

    I've got lots of Pokemon
    I've got room for shit-nizzle

The horror of every 5-6 year old as they first enter school... I should know. (Which interestingly enough lead to a decade or so not getting along with school. Heck, I still don't, and of course when I say interestingly... I mean just fucking wonderful.)

I'm seventeen but I've been listening to NIN since I was really little when my parents would play PHM nonstop for me. I was convinced it was an album meant for kids to teach them valuable life lessons. For instance, rather than "Terrible Lie!" I heard simply "Don't Lie!" I also thought that "I was up above it" was "Always have a buddy".

Also, only very recently did I realise that the chorus of Wish didn't go, "Wish there was something real in this world for you!"

And this isn't a misheard lyric exactly, but I've lived most of my life thinking it was "A Violent Fluid", which always perplexed me.

When I was a teenager and had yet to actually read the lyrics to "Closer", I thought it said "help me think I'm somebody else" instead of "help me become somebody else".

Back when The Slip came out, I kept mishearing these lines in Echoplex:

I built this place with broken parts
    Just like they said

In my ears, they somehow became

I built this place with broken pots
    December's here
