I'm sure I mentioned this before. I'll also admit that it proves that the word let still makes it far more menacing, intimidating and flat-out scathing.

It's also far better emphasis on the overall vulnerability, failure and hopelessness unleashed by Mr Self Destruct when let is compared to the word made in this case.

    Mr Self Destruct

Actual: "You let me do this to you."

What I keep hearing: "You made me do this to you."

Was just listening to "The Wretched" tonight and it occurred to me that to the unseasoned listener it could sound like he's saying, "the clouds will fart and the sky cracks open..."

I keep hearing "we keep picking while the skin turns black" as "we keep necking while the skin turns black" in She's Gone Away, which is somehow MORE disturbing to me.

You've got a mishearing inside of a mishearing here. It's actually "We keep licking while the skin turns black."

Better than me. I always heard that as "We can't recogni[ze] the skin turns black"

Why are people posting lyrics of songs NIN has covered? I legitimately thought this thread was for songs Trent wrote.

There IS alot of Alternative version of songs SERIOUSLY.

Live performances usually have changes especially when with someone else.

I still remember watching the BDO (Big Day Out) in Australia live Performance.

    "I'm okay, I'm on Crack"

"I want it all, just to stay on track"

I get that, but it’s Misheard NIN Lyrics. Bringing in covers just seems like a deviation from the topic to me. I’m not trying to spoil the fun, I’m just confused. I can understand bringing in “Suck” (despite it being a cover) because Trent wrote the lyrics for it, but I saw “I’m Afraid of Americans” earlier and was like, “Uhhh...” Maybe I’m just taking the title too literally. Carry on.

How about: Misheard lyrics in a song performed by NIN?

It’s not about the actual lyrics or who wrote them; it’s about the listener of a performance of a song and said listener’s misconception about what they heard.

If this was a Literary thread interpreting lyrics, I’d be right with ya. But this ain’t about that.

When people create a thread about misheard lyrics of any song, the WRITER of those lyrics is never relevant; because the listener just RE-WROTE the lyrics by mishearing them.

Slight drift: Performances of songs often deviate from the original lyrics, too; so the cover isn’t reliable and the listener isn’t sure WHAT the fuck they heard.

    Exhibit A:

    Drift = Off

Sometimes I hear lyrics where there aren't any. In "My Violent Heart," I always thought the weird loop at 0:39 was a whispered voice saying "fully functional", while, in "Head Down", the synth part at 3:29 sounded to me like Trent singing "none of you..." in falsetto.

I don't know if I've ever told this story before. I may have; I can't find it in this thread.

When I was eighteen, way back in '98, I was driving with a friend when "The Perfect Drug" came on. I was singing along and, when I got to the outro, I sort of trailed off. I wasn't so sure how I felt about the last lyric. I really liked the song, but the lyric seemed maybe clunky to me.* Or maybe I was just worried that other people found it clunky? Either way, it made me too nervous to sing. We were pulling into the mall, and I started a long and winding series of turns into the parking lot. I wanted this friend to eventually fall in love with me and sleep with me, like you do, and so I remarked wasn't it interesting how we give our favorite artists a pass on the same things we'd smack other artists down for? You know, just in case she too thought this lyric was clunky and therefore I could be seen as both hip enough to be into the tune and smart enough to be above it.

    Sigh. To be eighteen again.

Anyways, she was like, "God, totally. Like that last line." I nearly shat myself. I had gambled and won. I had accurately predicted the right thing to say at the moment. Unpredictably, however, I felt a little defensive of Trent. And I said, "I mean, maybe it's not so bad," and had planned to continue a defense of the line when she cut in and said, "Are you fucking kidding me? 'It's not as much fun to pick up the pizza'‽ Real badass, there, Trenty-boy. Maybe the next song will be about how delivery is much cooler."

I started laughing so hard, I drove over the curb and into the grassy area on the other side of the sidewalk. I told her the real lyric and she stared off, contemplating, then said, "I mean, maybe it's not great? Honestly, it sounds like Shakespeare to me now."

I've been trying to forget her version for 22 years. No dice.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention that about three months after that, a totally unrelated friend was listening to The Offspring's Smash and thought the chorus to the song "Killboy Powerhead" was "Hey, boy, dial ahead." First, I pointed out the name of the song being a rather large clue to the chorus. Then, I asked what in the hell he imagined a song with his version of the chorus to be about. He said, "I dunno. Ordering pizza?" Again: nearly shat my pants.

*Years later, I came around or developed Stockholm Syndrome, and think it's a totally genius instance of deliberate akwardness.

    Meet Your Master

I kept hearing: "Goddamn Julian" instead of "Count down to the end".

Until I read the lyrics I thought he was referencing a character from the ARG story, which seemed odd because he doesn't do that in any of the other songs. Turns out he hadn't in this song either.

If I'm not mistaken, that was actually a pretty common mondegreen around the time of release. Anyone else remember that?
