    Gaming and Technology News

Figured this was a pretty good catch-all thread from last time so perhaps to start another one.

First up, announced this morning, Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian has revealed that they're officially heading the new South Park game for the 360 and PS3. Before you say 'oh another crappy XBLA tower defense game or something'...it's going to be a full scale RPG.

Hudson Soft, creators of Bomberman, Bloody Roar, and other titles is being absorbed into Konami.

I really hope a quality Bomberman will still be released in the future, and hope Bloody Roar 5 makes an appearance at some point(they aren't great games, but I do love the series.) Hudson has always been a favorite of mine.

Microsoft's "Xbox720" (tentative name of course), due in 2013....may not allow you to play used games.

Via some type of implanted code, when you start it up and XBL reads it, the disc will only be playable on YOUR console from that point on. That sound you hear is Gamestop's president shitting his pants.

oh and PC gamers who think this console can't possibly keep up with them on processing power...get ready. All I'm sayin.

I assume that IF this did eventually happen (who knows at this point), they would have to cover literally ANY possibility of what could happen. What if you borrowed a game from your friend? etc. etc.

Not being able to play used games is a bit silly. I like the fact that I can buy a game that I don't think is worth buying down the road and get it for half the price.

Um... The 720 GPU will be outdated compared to PC GPUs by the time it is released.

The GPU that they're using is outdated right now. It's based on one of the less powerful 6xxx models (6670). In fact, the graphics card I'm using right now (which is about a year old now) is about 70% faster across the board with the exception of it's texel/second rate. But it's also still about $120 worth and that's probably simply too much for mass production and would drive the price of the 720 up too much. The 7xxx cards that are coming out right now will blow them out of the water, and if NVIDIA is to be believed (well at least their PR has stated that the new ATI GPUs don't impress them, but that's PR) their Kepler models will be even faster.

I am SOOOO happy this is going back to the turn based origins and not falling into some lame FPS trap that games like these have a tendency to fall into. I adore the original games (even the underwater one). This video has me very excited to see this old favorite come back.

I don't know much about HTML5, but judging by this use of it, I'm really impressed!! I can't imagine how something like that would work with Flash!

Plus, the fact that they use that technology for something incredible like education mapping the FUCKING UNIVERSE- is awesome.

So they're going to port Dark Souls to the PC.

Except it's using Games for Windows Live, which is cool because I was kind of afraid I might actually get the chance to play Dark Souls on my PC.

New Star Wars game 'Star Wars: 1313' announced, looks great.

Also an interesting article on DLC. I especially liked the first point discussing how people assume that by buying a game, they're legally buying all the code on it...so if DLC is already on the disc, companies can legally unlock it at any point they wish.

Looks like the sequel to Dead Island has been announced. 'Dead Island: Riptide' with details to be announced later this summer. Even with all the problems I still love the first one.

looks niiiice. Only thing I'm curious about is how much RAM it has, and also if that keyboard has the same rubberized feel like the iPad smart cover, and if so, why as its gonna wear out really quick.

Sadly I'm not really in the market for another tablet, the iPad 2 does me fine, what bothers me about these devices is that they date really quickly, my old PC lasted me 6 years before it really showed its age, my current one just past its 5th birthday and hasn't showed any signs of giving up apart from a hard drive fail a year or so back. Anyone who bought an iPad 1, only 2 years old (?) has already found it won't be fully supported, my phone was pretty good 2 years ago, now no apps work on it...

The type cover looks interesting, I agree the 'touch cover' looks a little flimsy...
I'd also be interested how the Windows 8 traditional desktop will work on a 10 inch touch screen.
I'm sure Metro will be great... the other half of the OS is the question.

Rockstar Vancouver (makers of Max Payne 3) closing its doors.

Looks like it's being swallowed up by Rockstar Toronto, employees have all been offered jobs there. I personally have one friend in the studio who isn't about to just pack up and move to the other side of the country...interesting to see what's gonna happen.

Curious timing. I wonder if MP3 didn't perform as well as they'd hoped?
Or maybe it was something that'd been planned for a while and it was just a case of waiting until they'd finished the game.

:edit: Worth noting that Relic Entertainment, another big developer in Vancouver, was recently gutted for financial reasons, despite creating the highly successful Dawn of War series.
