    Custom Album

With excitement for the new album growing, I've been listening to a lot of old NIN and started creating some playlist.
Then I started thinking if I had the chance to arrange any album of NIN's, what would I create? Then I started thinking, people here might have some sequences that I would be interested in listening to. So here are the rules, there are no rules.
Just take your favorite NIN album and any songs from that era to create an ordered sequence that you'd prefer.
Basically, pretend you're the permanent Bob Ezrin of NIN.
For example: Create a new TDS that includes Burn/Dead Souls/anything FDTS, then remove Big Man with A Gun/Piggy and then rearrange the songs.
Track listing numbers can vary. There's no wrong way, all NIN is good.
Look forward to seeing what you come up with, and remember there's no end to the possibilities!!!

I like this idea. I've been thinking about cherry picking things from different NIN eras to create a crazy sonic concept, I think it could be done and even sound like it was meant to be. I will type up a list of what I mean later tonight.

Isnt it the day the world went away. Not whole?
It is a good track list though. I like the idea of it starting with the way out is through. I always remember seeing the tv commercial with that song in it and thinking, this album is going to kill.

But seriously, i'll come back to this. I tried to create an ultimate NIN album once that featured any songs from Pretty Hate Machine up to The Slip. Didn't go well.

@jeffrey : I am so going to try that!!

    The Downward Spiral
    Mr Self-Destruct
    Piggy
    Heresy
    March of the pigs
Closer to God (I really prefer this version)
    Ruiner
    The Becoming
    I Do Not Want This
    Burn
    Big Man With a Gun
    A Warm Place
    Eraser
    Reptile
    The Downward Spiral
    Hurt (Quiet)
[missing A Violet Fluid, I have not tried a place for it yet]

    With Teeth
All the love in the world
    You know what you are
    The Collector
    The hands that feeds
    Love is not enough
Every day is exactly the same
    With teeth
    Only
    Getting Smaller
    Not so pretty now
    Non-entity
    Sunspots
    Home
    The line begins to blur
    Beside you in time
    Right where it belongs

My version of With Teeth has some drastic changes:

All the love in the world (Deep cuts)
    You know what you are
    Non-Entity
The hand that feeds (Ruff mix)
    Not so pretty now
    Everyday is exactly the same
With Teeth (I cut literally the whole song except the quiet piano part, and amplified it)
    Only
    Getting Smaller
    Sunspots
    Home
    The line begins to blur
    Beside you in time
    Right where it belongs

Some years ago a friend of mine asked me to make her a NIN mix cd. All she was familiar with was The Downward Spiral. So I was tasked with capturing the essence of Nine Inch Nails without using the one album which, for me, best represents what Nine Inch Nails is. On top of that, I found it impossible to use any of the tracks from Pretty Hate Machine because the sound quality was so different from the other albums that they did not flow well with the newer records (obviously this was before the remaster came out.) This is what I came up with:

    01 Driver Down
    02 Somewhat Damaged
    03 Leaving Hope
    04 Burn
    05 Suck
06 The Way Out Is Through
    07 Wish
    08 The Great Below
    09 Beside You In Time
    10 Closer To God
    11 Last
    12 In This Twilight
    13 Right Where It Belongs

@PhoenixML: Nice mixes. I love Closer to God, it's like a mix of Closer/Burn. That would be fun to mash up. I need to take a stab at TDS.
@Pyract: So you pulled the teeth, literally. My WT mix would prob never include Not So Pretty Now, that song just doesn't grab me. Like the remix additions.
@Kaze: That is definitely a variety of songs. I always forget Driver Down, great instrumental.

I prefer to put Starfuckers Inc. (Version) before Starfuckers Inc. (Version) personally, but that's just my preference.

No, No... you put Starfuckers, Inc (version) before Starfuckers, Inc (version) but start it with Starfuckers, Inc (version). Everyone knows that.

I guess I'll be contributing the With Teeth reworking of mine in this thread, when it's done.

Yeah, I've been listening to these tracks in this order. I used Ableton trying to fuse the tracks together more smoothly, and it's been working somewhat. Into the Void immediatly leading into Deep is fucking fantastic. I am still unsure of Metal, but it is one of my favorite covers. I might even like it more after Pilgrimage instead of before it.

EDIT: I just had the acoustic at the end of Metal fading out while Even Deeper starts and it has a much better flow. Switching them now on the list.

I recently started revisiting an extended version of Pretty Hate Machine that I made in 2007. It consisted of the standard album tracks mixed with different remixes and the Purest Feeling demo to make the tracks longer. Once I make the finishing touches that I'd like to make I will make it available to anyone interested. Here's the track listing:

    01. Intro
    02. Head Like a Hole
    03. Terrible Lie
    04. Down in It
    05. Segue 01 (I'm either going to put this at the end of "Down in It" or think of a better title.)
    06. Sanctified
    07. Something I Can Never Have
    08. Kinda I Want To
    09. Sin
    10. That's What I Get
    11. Segue 02 (Same deal as above.)
    12. The Only Time
    13. Ringfinger

Note: No, I'm not going to include "Get Down, Make Love" on it as I believe the production on the song is a completely different vibe and throws off the balance (I believe the same with the remaster).

Yeah, I agree on the Get Down, Make Love.

It would be fun to take the track You Know Who You Are off of halo 3 and cut it to maybe intro into HLAH. Just an idea... that just might work.

No Purest Feeling love I see

It's funny you mention that track because that's what I used for the intro. I cut it off at a point where I could transition it into the opening drums of Head Like a Hole (which is when that track starts on my mix). No love only because I think that would also throw off the vibe.

Its pretty funny that this thread showed up today, I've been doing the exact same thing for With Teeth recently. Here's what I came up with:

1.All the Love in the Word
2.Do You Know What You Are
    3.Getting Smaller
    4.Love Is Not Enough
    5.Non-Entity
    6.With Teeth
    7.Home
    8.Sunspots
    9.The Line Begins to Blur
    10.Beside You in Time
11.Right Where it Belongs (maybe v.2)

I took off all the singles because, for me at least, the album feels less coherent with them included(not that I don't enjoy them). I mean, aside from being topical in 05', what does The Hand That Feeds' politics really have in common with the rest of the album. Not so Pretty Now is basically a weaker version of Getting Smaller, I left the Collector off just so the whole thing flowed better and Home acts as kind of an introduction for the second side. Relatively quick, consistent and to the point: I somewhat liked how it turned out.

I listened to this. I like it a lot. I think it twists the story a bit as well. Hope it's a decent list.

I'm probably going to shelve that Pretty Hate Machine mix. I keep getting distracted by making long versions of other songs and I kind of want to put my focus into that.

Here's a list of what I've done so far:
    - The Day the World Went Away (Combing the original, the "Quiet Mix," and the Still version.)
    - Happiness in Slavery (Using the original and various elements from two remixes.)
    - Wish (Using J.G. Thirlwell's remix, I edited the track to focus on the "live" sounding version of the song that creeps in and out.)
